Ridgewood Local Ordinance Guide: Understanding Commercial Power Tool and Landscaping Restrictions

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Living in the Village of Ridgewood offers a beautiful, peaceful suburban environment—but that peace can quickly be disrupted by the roar of commercial lawnmowers, leaf blowers, or construction equipment.

To maintain the quality of life for local families, the Village strictly regulates the commercial use of power tools and maintenance equipment in or near residential zones. If you are a homeowner hiring contractors, or a business operating in town, staying compliant with Village Code Chapter 222 is essential to avoid hefty violations.

The Permitted Hours: When Can Contractors Legally Work?

According to Ridgewood Village Code § 222-1, commercial use of power tools, manual tools, motorized construction equipment, and landscaping gear is restricted to very specific windows.

These rules apply to all residential zones, as well as any commercial or industrial properties operating within 200 feet of a residential property line:

  • Monday through Friday: Permitted from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. only.

  • Saturdays: Permitted from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. only.

  • Sundays: Prohibited entirely (unless a rare emergency exception is granted by the Village Manager).

Strict Holiday Bans: No Commercial Work Allowed

Many homeowners schedule big yard projects over long holiday weekends, but commercial crews are legally required to pack up. Commercial tool and landscaping use is completely prohibited on all federally observed holidays, including:

  • New Year’s Day

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day

  • Washington’s Birthday (Presidents’ Day)

  • Memorial Day

  • Juneteenth (June 19th or its observed day)

  • Independence Day

  • Labor Day

  • Columbus Day

  • Veterans Day

  • Thanksgiving Day

  • Christmas Day

What About Exceptions? The only everyday exception to these rules applies to § 222-2: Ice and snow removal machinery is exempted from these hourly restrictions to ensure public safety during winter weather events.

How to Report a Violation in Ridgewood

If a commercial landscaping crew, tree service, or construction contractor is operating outside of these legal windows, residents are advised to take action through official channels.

  • Who to Call: Report active violations directly to the Ridgewood Police Department at 201-652-3900 (Select Option #3).

  • Important Safety Reminder: DO NOT CALL 911 to report noise or code violations. Emergency lines must remain open for life-threatening situations.

  1. Some people worship on Saturday, not Sunday.
Since we are so ‘inclusive’ please explain that one.

    1. Ask your god?

  2. 8AM? Machines are going off at 7 M-F

  3. It should be a hard stop at 4pm mon-fri – there are people who like to sit outside without landscapers interrupting that peace. And more importantly, why are landscapers allowed on school property during school hours?

  4. What is the difference between a professional landscaper and Ned the neighbor who fires up a high decibel Husqvarna at all hours of the day? Set hours for all. Who cares who is holding the leaf blower?
