Ridgewood NJ, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued an Air Quality Action Day for the following counties: Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Essex, Union. until midnight EDT Thursday Night.

An Air Quality Action day for Particulate Matter has been declared for Wednesday, June 7th and Thursday, June 8th.

Sensitive individuals, including those with heart or lung disease, the elderly, and the young should limit strenuous activities and the amount of time active outdoors.

Levels of fine particulates will rise into unhealthy for sensitive groups category statewide today and Thursday and likely last into the evening hours both days due to wildfire smoke transport from eastern Canadian wildfires.

In Addition, ozone is forecast to reach the moderate category on Wednesday as sunny skies, light winds, and warm temperatures are forecast for the Garden State. For additional information, please visit the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Web site at http://www.njaqinow.net.

An Air Quality Action day for particulate matter (PM) is a designated day when air pollution levels, specifically related to particulate matter, are expected to be high or reach unhealthy levels. These days are typically announced by environmental agencies, local governments, or meteorological departments to alert the public and implement certain measures to reduce pollution and protect public health.

Particulate matter refers to tiny particles suspended in the air, such as dust, soot, smoke, and other solid or liquid particles. These particles can vary in size, and those smaller than 2.5 micrometers (referred to as PM2.5) are of particular concern as they can penetrate deep into the respiratory system and cause adverse health effects.

During an Air Quality Action day for particulate matter, individuals and communities are encouraged to take actions to minimize their contribution to air pollution and protect their health. Here are some common measures taken on such days:

  1. Limit outdoor activities: Reduce prolonged exposure to outdoor air, especially in areas with high pollution levels.
  2. Use public transportation or carpooling: Minimize the use of personal vehicles to reduce emissions. Instead, opt for public transportation, carpooling, or other shared modes of transportation.
  3. Avoid burning activities: Refrain from burning wood, leaves, or any other materials that can contribute to the release of particulate matter.
  4. Conserve energy: Reduce energy consumption by turning off unnecessary lights and appliances, and avoid using high-energy devices during peak pollution hours.
  5. Indoor air quality management: Keep windows and doors closed to prevent outdoor pollutants from entering indoors. Use air purifiers or filters if available.
  6. Spread awareness: Share information about the air quality situation with family, friends, and colleagues to encourage them to take appropriate precautions.
  7. Monitor air quality updates: Stay informed about air quality forecasts and updates provided by local authorities or environmental agencies. Follow any advice or guidelines they provide.

Remember, the specific actions and recommendations may vary depending on the severity of the pollution levels, local regulations, and recommendations from authorities in your area. It’s essential to follow the instructions provided by local environmental agencies or health departments during Air Quality Action days for particulate matter to protect your well-being.
