The New Jersey Turnpike Authority, which runs both highways, adopted a $2.5 billion 2023 budget which calls for a 3% toll increase starting January 1st 2023 in a budget that increased by 7.4% over 2022.
Officials blamed the increase on “pressures on discretionary travel and costs due to an inflation rate of 8.3%, a level not seen in 40 years,” , well at Least they didn’t blame climate change.
Based on the 2022 increase, Parkway tolls would increase from the current $1.96 for E-ZPass customers to $2.02 and from $2 to $2.10 for cash at toll plazas with one-way toll collection, said Tom Feeney, a Turnpike Authority spokesman.
Toll plazas in Toms River will increase from 97 cents to $1.01 for E-ZPass customers and from $1 to $1.05 for cash customers, he added.
The average Turnpike toll for passenger cars would increase from $4.95 to $5.10, Feeney said. For a trip from Edison (Interchange 10) to Newark (Interchange 14), cash tolls will increase from $5.65 to $5.85, peak period E-ZPass tolls will rise from $5.62 to $5.79, and off-peak E-ZPass rates will go up from $4.22 to $4.35,
The process for imposing a toll increase changed in 2020 on the Turnpike, Atlantic City Expressway and Port Authority. In 2020, when the Turnpike Authority and South Jersey Transportation Authority moved to a “toll indexing” process that allows the agency to take an automatic toll increase based on certain economic indicators. What these indicators are remains a mystery .
Tolls are so out of wack with reality.
Employers should help their workers go to office 3 days and 2 days remote
