Ridgewood NJ, The long-vacant Town Garage property in Ridgewood is finally undergoing transformation after sitting dormant in the downtown area since 2007. Mayor Paul Vagianos recently confirmed that after the Village took ownership in October, demolition was completed, and environmental remediation is now underway—at the expense of the prior owner.

Gas Odor Complaints as Cleanup Continues

As excavation and remediation efforts ramp up, numerous residents have reported smelling gas, prompting multiple calls to the Ridgewood Fire Department in recent days. Officials have closed off the employee parking section of the Walnut Street lot while old underground tanks are being removed.

Seven Fuel Tanks Discovered—With More Possibly Hidden

Village Manager Keith Kazmark previously reported that seven fuel tanks had already been removed from the North Walnut Street Parking Lot (132 Franklin Avenue) and the Town Garage site (120 Franklin Avenue). However, another tank was recently discovered, raising concerns about whether additional tanks remain buried beneath the property.

A Two-Year Environmental Remediation Timeline

The remediation process is expected to take two years, with ongoing environmental testing required before any redevelopment plans can move forward. Officials remain committed to ensuring the site is fully cleaned and safe for future use.

  1. another boondoggle…… this pollution at this site has been know for a very long time….threats of “plumes ” of pollution have been known about.

  2. Can someone please explain why it takes 2 years to remove the contaminated soil? I don’t think the area is that big? Is it because it’s deep? Can they just remove a reasonable amount of dirt and put concrete to seal it in? So it won’t ever come in contact with water or people?

  3. “The remediation process is expected to take two years”

I wish FanDuel would set up a Village of Ridgewood page and let us wager on these proclamations.

  4. lots of envelopes being passed around , big money maker for Democrats

  5. It’s called kicking the can. Ridgewood knew full well when they put in the parking lot that a Texaco station was there for years pumping gas. They pumped gas at TG as well. They just paved it over.

    1. They don’t care. Half of these greaseballs will be living in Florida by the time this remediation is even nearing completion.

You do know retirement accounts and pensions are protected in Florida from civil suit judgements, right?

    2. The asbestos in the old Warner is going to make this garage site look like Vermont by comparison.

  6. The previous owner should claim bankruptcy , then it would be on the Village
