Turkey’s leaders said they crushed an attempted military coup to topple President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after hours of clashes through the night that saw tanks blockading roads, soldiers fighting police and warplanes bombing the parliament in Ankara.

Almost 200 people, including dozens of coup backers, were killed and 2,839 military personnel were arrested, pro-Erdogan forces said. At dawn, about 50 rebel soldiers who had been blocking a bridge across the Bosphorus in Istanbul were shown on television leaving their tanks and armored carriers with hands raised. By Saturday morning, most international flights were canceled and streets in Ankara and Istanbul were virtually deserted with shops largely shuttered.

Turkey’s Army Says It Seized Power as Premier Vows to Resist

Selcan Hacaoglu

Turkey’s army says it seized power in the country as warplanes flew over the capital and tanks blocked roads in Istanbul. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said his government is still in control and will resist.

The army said in an e-mailed statement that it took power to restore freedom and democracy. It said all international agreements will be honored.

The coup effort won’t be permitted to succeed, Yildirim told NTV television. He said army units have besieged “some institutions,” and he said police — traditionally closer to his government than the army — have been ordered to use arms if necessary. He said the elected government remains in power.

PUBLISHED: 16:27 EST, 14 July 2016 | UPDATED: 14:07 EST, 15 July 2016

Police today arrested the wife of the ISIS fanatic who killed 84 people including at least ten children in Nice using a lorry and a handgun.

It has been revealed that killer Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, 31, a French Tunisian and married father of three, was depressed about the break up of his marriage before he mounted pavements at high speed and ploughed through crowds celebrating Bastille Day in Nice last night.

He had separated from wife Hajer some two years ago following a series of violent arguments, and he was said to have been upset in recent months as their divorce had been finalised.

Today Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said police have arrested his wife, as detectives try to establish his motives and if he had accomplices.

Dramatic footage released today shows the moment he was shot dead by five police officers in the 19-tonne lorry he used as a murder weapon on his mile-long killing spree.

One eyewitness filmed armed officers approaching the cab of the lorry and firing repeatedly through its windscreen and doors before it appears Bouhlel can be heard screaming after being hit by a police bullet and he died slumped in the passenger seat.

Witness Nadar El Shafei told the BBC: ‘He died inside the vehicle – I saw his head [hanging] out of the window, they kept shooting him from all sides just to be sure. Then they asked us to run away in case there were others inside the car or a bomb.’

DiGaetano leads BCRO back to life with Beef Steak Dinner overflow crowd

Hackensack NJ, Chairman DiGaetano’s first two events are totally sold out! The ‘New Leadership Now’ team put together a sold out beefsteak (a tradition akin to the “beef and beer”) which was attended by an overflow crowd of over 350.

After years of strife and political infighting as well as much skepticism as to party motivations ,Republicans from all over the county descended upon the Hackensack headquarters for some good food and trade political gossip . The over flow crowd provided an impressive show of force at the advent of a new era for the BCRO.

The newly elected Bergen County Republican Chairman Paul DiGaetano leadership style is not about “me or I” he always talks about “us and we”. It is a refreshing approach to politics .

Between this fundraiser and the big-ticket event with Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno event earlier this week led by BCRO Finance Chair Chuck Shotmeyer, the BCRO looks to once again be on the road to recovering its financial footing.

The GOP consensus was that a BCRO event had not been that crowded since its Golden Era of the 1980s. With six county offices up this year including the last remaining Freeholder incumbents, the Republicans are only beginning the rebuilding task.

9 Steps Successfully Counter Jihad

AMIE GLAZOV

by JAMIE GLAZOV12 Jul 2016300

While the Obama administration continues to allow the Muslim Brotherhood to direct American foreign policy and, therefore, to implement “strategies” that render America defenseless in the face of Jihad and stealth Jihad, there are some alternative strategies that have the potential to turn this catastrophic situation around completely in America’s favor.

Below are 9 concrete steps that, if implemented by a future American administration, would make a big difference in preserving our civilization and in defending Americans from terrorism:

1. Label the Enemy and Make a Threat Assessment.

The Obama administration continues to refuse to label our enemy and, therefore, it continues to enable our defeat in the terror war. It is urgent that we name our enemy (i.e. Islamic Jihad) and definitively identify what ideology inspires our enemy (i.e. Islamic law).

2. Scrap “Countering Violent Extremism.”

“Countering Violent Extremism” is the pathetic and destructive focus of the Obama administration in allegedly fighting the terror war. On the one hand, this “focus” is vague to the point of being meaningless and completely incapacitates us. On the other hand, this focus allows the administration to perpetuate the destructive fantasy that there are other types of “extremists” — who just happen to be the Left’s political opponents — that pose a great threat to the country.

For example, as Stephen Coughlin has revealed, the “violent extremists” the administration is clearly worried about are the “right-wing Islamophobes” whom the administration obviously considers to be the real threat to American security.

The “Countering Violent Extremism” is trash and needs to be thrown in the garbage.

3. Stop “Partnering” With Muslim Brotherhood Front Groups.

The government needs to stop cooperating with, and listening to, Muslim Brotherhood front groups such as CAIR and ISNA immediately. The Muslim Brotherhood document, the Explanatory Memorandum, has made it clear that the Brotherhood’s objective is to destroy our civilization from within by our own hands with the influence of these groups. Moreover, as Robert Spencer advises, there needs to be legislation that will bar all such groups and affiliated individuals from advising the government or receiving any grants from it.

4. Implement a Concrete “Countering-Jihad” Strategy.

After discarding the “Countering Violent Extremism” absurdity, a concrete Counter-Jihad strategy must become an official policy. It must specifically register that Jihadists are the enemies and that Islamic law (Sharia) is what specifically motivates them.

Most importantly, as Sebastian Gorka urges in Defeating Jihad: The Winnable War, the government needs to lay down a vision, an actual “threat doctrine analysis” in a thorough document, just like George Kennan’s Long Telegram and NSC-68 did in laying out the strategic foundation to fighting communism in the Cold War. It is absolutely mind-boggling that nothing of this sort exists today in our terror war — and it is a reflection of the Left being in charge and of the destructive defeat that it is sowing.

4. Launch Our Own Counter-propaganda Campaign.

The Left and Islamists engage in propaganda 24/7. What does our propaganda war entail? Zilch.

Sebastian Gorka is crucially correct, therefore, when he recommends a national counter-propaganda campaign that involves a two-part approach: the first being the bolstering of efforts to define our enemy (Steps #1 and #4 above) and, second, the strengthening of our allies and partners in their own counter-propaganda efforts – which must include our empowering of Muslims who are trying to form an anti-Jihadist version of Islam.

Consequently, educational programs have to be set up everywhere, from public schools to universities to workplaces, in businesses and numerous other institutions. These programs must crystallize what exactly Islamic Law is and how it inspires and sanctions violence against unbelievers. This has to also involve, as Gorka urges, “a nationwide program of education that includes the armed services as well as federal, state, and local police forces and the intelligence community.”

The education campaign must also focus on the second part of Gorka’s counter-propaganda campaign, which is to help strengthen Muslims who seek to seize Islam from the jihadists’ hands.

6. Affirm Sharia’s Assault on the U.S. Constitution as Seditious.

Once the truth is accepted that jihadis are inspired and sanctioned by their Islamic texts, it must logically become required that mosques, Islamic schools and groups have to immediately curtail any teaching that motivates sedition, violence, and hatred of unbelievers (i.e. remember how CAIR advised Muslims not to talk to the FBI). Indeed, once the government discerns and labels the elements of Islamic law that threaten the American Constitution, any preaching and spreading of those elements in America must be labelled as seditious.

7. Put Pressure on Mosques, Islamic Groups and Schools.

Authorities have to start subjecting mosques and other Islamic institutions to surveillance — and discard the suicidal leftist notion that it is “racist” and Islamophobic to do so. Islamic institutions have to be made to buffer their lip-service against terror with actuallydoing something about it. As Robert Spencer counsels, this has to involve introducing programs that teach against jihadists’ understanding of Islam — and these programs have to be regularly monitored by the government. (This will be a part of Gorka’s suggested counter-propaganda campaign discussed in Step #5).

Spencer rightly stresses that the paradigm has to become that Muslim communities have to win the “trust” of intelligence and law enforcement agents, rather than the other way around, which is, absurdly and tragically, the case right now.

8. Bring Counter-Jihadists into the Government.

Instead of having Muslim Brotherhood sympathizers like Mohamed Elibiary serving on the U.S. Homeland Security Advisory Council (he “resigned” in Sept. 2014 under mysterious circumstances), and Muslim Brotherhood-linked individuals like Huma Abedin serving as the right-hand woman of Hillary Clinton, we need to bring in people who actually love America and want to protect it. We all know who these noble and courageous individuals are – and some of them are referenced in this article. The government must also bring in brave Muslim individuals who genuinely reject Jihad and empower them in propagating their anti-jihadist vision for Islam.

(P.S. Yes, there is an argument to be made that Islam cannot be Islam without Jihad. But the debate over this belongs in another forum. And whatever the answer, it does not mean that the effort to empower Muslims who want to make the anti-jihadist Islamic vision possible should not be made.)

9. Ridicule the Enemy.

Ridicule is a vicious and potent weapon. There is a baffling and shameful silence in our culture’s sphere of comedy, especially in Hollywood and our media, with regard to the myriad ingredients of Sharia and Jihad that merit at least a million hilarious satirical sketches.

Bill Maher, for whatever unappealing drawbacks he has in conservatives’ eyes, has set a bold standard in this respect in his Burka Fashion Show skit. American comedians need to start writing scripts that follow in Maher’s footsteps and Americans need to encourage and equip them to do so – and to also vigorously defend them from the attacks and slanders they will inevitably receive from totalitarian leftist and Islamic forces.

We must never underestimate the crippling effect of comedy on the totalitarian Mullahs of the world. Indeed, the contemptuous, snickering and roaring laughter of people, as they gaze at the pathetic rules and lives of Sharia’s gatekeepers, poses a danger to tyrants like no other.

Kennedy Odede, NYT bestselling author and CEO of Shining Hope for Communities, explains how to counter the emptiness, despair and lack of meaning that fuel violence and terror

Kennedy Odede

July 15,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Kennedy Odede knows a thing or two about falling into the clutches of a terror group.

Raised in devastating poverty in Africa’s largest urban slum, Kibera, Odede fell into a violent street gang as a child, drawn by the sense of belonging to a community united in its struggle for survival.

Now founder and CEO of the acclaimed nonprofit Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) and co-author of the New York Times bestselling book Find Me Unafraid: Love, Loss and Hope in an African Slum, Odede understands that similar to street gangs, terrorism is fueled by emptiness, despair and a lack of meaning.

Messages such as “Join the fight for freedom,” and “The western world is ruining us,” resonate with and attract people when their own communities, government, parents and social networks have nothing to offer.

The only viable solution, Odede says, is to attack the root cause — social disconnection — by engaging vulnerable individuals in their communities through activities such as sports, clean-up projects and education.

This is exactly what Odede and his wife Jessica Posner Odede did in founding SHOFCO, which transforms poor, urban communities in Kenya through tuition-free education for girls and holistic social services for all, filling the dangerous void created by despair with supportiveness and hope.

There’s much more on SHOFCO’s story and the outcome in Find Me Unafraid: Love, Loss and Hope in an African Slum, which Odede and Posner wrote together.  It releases in paperback on July 26 (Ecco / Harper Collins).  The book has received glowing praise from Chelsea Clinton, Gloria Steinem and several Nobel Prize Winners.

About Kennedy Odede
One of Africa’s best-known community organizers and social entrepreneurs, Kennedy Odede the co-author with Jessica Posner Odede of the New York Times bestselling book Find Me Unafraid: Love, Loss and Hope in an African Slum. Founder and CEO of the nonprofit Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) based in Kenya, he is a member of the Clinton Global Initiative and was awarded the 2010 Echoing Green Fellowship, which is given to the world’s top emerging social entrepreneurs. He also won the 2010 Dell Social Innovation Competition and was named one of Forbes’ 2014 30 Under 30: Social Entrepreneurs.

Kennedy speaks six languages, is a senior fellow with Humanity in Action, and an Aspen Institute New Voices Fellow.   His work has been featured in the PBS documentary Half the Sky, by Chelsea Clinton and Maria Menounos on NBC, by President Bill Clinton, and on multiple occasions by Nicholas Kristof in The New York Times.

SHOFCO combats extreme poverty and gender inequality by linking schools for girls to a set of high-value, holistic community services for all. In 2016 it will reach 100,000 people.

Garrett votes to ensure U.S. banks never finance airplane sales to Iran

Scott_Garrett_theridgewoodblog

July 15,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05), Chairman of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets and Government-Sponsored Enterprises, today voted for three pieces of legislation before the Financial Services Committee to stop the sale of U.S. aircrafts to Iran from entities like Boeing.

“It’s crazy for the Obama Administration to allow U.S. companies to sell airplanes to the largest state sponsor of terror in the world, Iran, and it’s even crazier to allow the U.S. financial system to finance these transactions or use taxpayer dollars to back these deals,” said Garrett. “Since the president is willing to put the needs of Iran before our national security, and entities such as Boeing and the Export-Import Bank are more concerned about profits than stopping terrorists, Congress must put an immediate stop to this dangerous idea. The legislation before the Financial Services Committee today will ensure that taxpayer money and the U.S. financial system is never used to assist an Iranian regime that wants to destroy the United States and its allies.”

Legislation before the committee:

H.R. 5729, Prohibits the Secretary of the Treasury from licensing the export of commercial aircraft to Iran.
H.R. 5711, Prohibits the Secretary of the Treasury from authorizing transactions by U.S. financial institutions in connection with these sales.
H.R. 5715, Ensures that no taxpayer dollars will back these sales in the form of Ex-Im financing by codifying and strengthening a current prohibition on Ex-Im support for Iran contained in annual appropriations language and closing a loophole that could allow for indirect Ex-Im financing of aircraft deals with Iran through third-party leasing companies.

Background:

By authorizing aircraft sales to the ayatollahs, the Obama Administration would materially aid what its own State Department calls the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism. Just last month, Iran Air flew “known weapons resupply routes to Syria” three times. This is the very airline President Obama wants to receive new Boeing airplanes. Additionally, neither the Treasury Department nor Boeing has provided assurances that Iran Air will not transfer planes to other airlines.

Under current law, Ex-Im may indirectly finance planes being exported to Iran, particularly by providing support to aircraft leasing companies. This is a loophole that Congress must close. When selling the nuclear deal, the Obama Administration has explicitly stated that Iran will not have access to the U.S. financial system. Any authorization of U.S. financing for aircraft exports would show that the Administration has been misleading the public.

Garrett has been an outspoken critic of the Ex-Im bank and the Iran nuclear deal.

Readers say Not Everyone is Happy With the New Ridgewood Council

Rurik Halaby

Rurik Halaby photo by Boyd Loving

Week 1. Rubrik is already on Facebook questioning the council decisions.

He obviously doesn’t realize that he looks like a really big crank. He must think that he is going to command legions of dissatisfied residents in his own revolt. Meanwhile the old council members have moved on. Even Don, Tim and Ron have seen the writing on the wall and have kept a low profile.

The Village is ready for this change and we spoke at the polls. Rubrik is going to be that guy who attends council meetings just to hear his own voice. I wish that he ran for office so that he could have come in last. Probably would not have amassed the necessary signatures to get on the ballot.

Not all of the “old Council members” have moved on – Gwenn was sitting in the audience at last night’s Council meeting taking copious notes during the discussion about parking. She left the meeting shortly after that discussion ended, and was seen pow wowing with Rurik Halaby in the hallway.

Mr. Halaby needs to lick his wounds and go home. We simply don’t want to hear from him any more (and never did). Addressing council members as if your approval mattered was embarrassing.

Last night Mr. Halaby accursed Mayor Knudsen of “pandering to her base,” but he never blinked an eye when his buddy Paul Aronsohn did anything possible to please his buddies – property owners in the CBD and real estate developers.

You’ve gotta feel a bit sorry for Halaby. Two major election defeats within 45 days of each other and now when he speaks at Village Council meetings, no one on the dais gives a rat’s ass about anything he says, and the only person in the audience listening to him is his wife.

Extel Communications is Back working hard for the Village of Ridgewood

Tom Riche Extel Communication, James Founder Ridgewood blog

July 15,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, This won’t  mean much to new council attendees many long time Village Hall watchers all recall how Tom Riche was treated by Paul, Gwenn and Albert regarding his firm and accusing him of overcharging the village during an emergency situation when the phones were out of order at the Fire House.

It was handled so badly and it was terrible to watch.  Funny thing but last year Roberta hired Extel Communications  back for a job as it was the lowest bid and the most experienced firm. At the first council  meeting of the new council , Extel  was hired for several jobs in the water department and Roberta  praised Extel on many levels and it was by far the best option for the village.

All  we could think of was how personal and vindictive the3 amigos were in wanting to hurt Tom even at he expense of what was good for the village.  Everyone who knows Tom knew that he loved Ridgewood and helped in so many ways through his own personal actions and those of his company

Reader says ideologues strive to CHANGE the behavior of their constituents and try to MOLD them (aka force them) into doing something that meets the ideologues ideal of perfection

3 amigos in action Ridgewood NJ

RE: “We need smart people to solve our problrms not idiots who have no idea what they are doing.”

You don’t understand, they know EXACTLY what they are doing… this is what ideologues do.

They DO NOT care to solve the problems of their constituents nor do they strive to make the lives of their constituents better in a direct measurable way – such as making it EASIER (better, faster, cheaper, etc.) for their constituents to do that which they have already CHOSEN to do (i.e. drive their cars)

INSTEAD, ideologues strive to CHANGE the behavior of their constituents and try to MOLD them (aka force them) into doing something that meets the ideologues ideal of perfection – which usually results in a lower quality of life with less diversity and a “sameness” reduced to the LCD of minimal happiness and misery.

The ideologues thinking in implementing the bike lane is to make driving in town more miserable so that people will be forced to abandon their (evil) cars out of frustration and convert to (good) cycling. In reality, the net result is wasted resources, angry constituents, reduction in happiness and productivity and rerouting of traffic onto more residential streets causing more safety issues and more gasoline usage (aka pollution). But don’t worry, these failures will not dissuade the ideologue. they WILL NOT see the error nor folly of their ways – instead they will redouble their efforts to try to find a new way to achieve their goals – usually by inflicting more pain and suffering on their constituents (ex: tripling the gasoline tax) in an attempt to force people to do not what they themselves want to do but what the ideologues want them to do.

The irony of it all is that if the ideologues ultimate utopia is reached the resulting world will be a miserable place with little to no innovation and no ecstasy (nor misery), but instead just the flat mediocre sameness of being… might as well be a plant.

Grave Concerns About Request to Dissolve Ridgewood’s Construction Board of Appeals

3 amigos

Dear Mayor and Village Council,

Firstly, I wanted to compliment you all on an open and thoughtful first meeting as the newly constructed Council.  For the first time in years, Residents heard truly open discourse between Council Members and real discussion on the topics before the board.  That was so refreshing.  Thank you.

I am writing today, as one agenda item put before you is cause for great concern:  the request to dissolve Ridgewood’s in-house Construction Board of Appeals so that  any relevant cases in the future will be heard by the County’s board.  When this request was made, many Residents in the audience thought: “Oh no, here we go again.”  In light of this request it felt clear that Residents, and the Council, will have to remain very tuned-in and vigilant even with the prior Council’s voting block gone, as elements of their agenda may remain.

There is no way that Ridgewood should dissolve the Construction Board of Appeals (CBOA) at a time when so much potential construction, and construction related reviews, disputes, and potentially even litigation, may stand before the Village.  I was surprised that our Village Manager did not catch this and even appeared to support the request.  The CBOA representative who requested the dissolution indicated that this board hasn’t had much to do for several years and so may not be needed.  One of the reasons they have not had much to do is that many of the construction projects proposed in Ridgewood are of such a controversial nature that they’ve been held up for years.  However, at least four of these construction projects  filed site plans last month and hope to have construction permits asap.  Despite the passage of the recent high density multifamily ordinances, promoted by the prior Mayor and Deputy Mayor, these ordinances and the related applicant construction projects remain controversial, due to their size, scale and density being at odds with the majority of Residents’ desires, as well as issue with the process by which they were passed.

Given this, Ridgewood absolutely cannot turn over any governance and or construction review to outside entities or boards.  Ridgewood needs to control its own destiny and we are lucky to have so many Residents with the smarts, talents and experience to do that.

As such, please, do not dissolve our Construction Board of Appeals right at the time it may be needed the most.

Thanks for considering this request.

Best Regards,

Dave Slomin
Ridgewood Resident

No racial bias in police shootings, study by Harvard professor shows

Outrage In Missouri Town After Police Shooting Of 18-Yr-Old Man

By Valerie Richardson – The Washington Times – Monday, July 11, 2016

A study by a Harvard professor released this month found no evidence of racial bias in police shootings even though officers were more likely to interact physically with non-whites than whites.

The paper for the National Bureau of Economic Research, which examined thousands of incidents at 10 large police departments in California, Florida and Texas, concluded that police were no more likely to shoot non-whites than whites after factoring in extenuating circumstances.

“On the most extreme use of force — officer-involved shootings — we find no racial differences in either the raw data or when contextual factors are taken into account,” said Harvard economics professor Roland G. Fryer Jr. in the abstract of the July 2016 paper.

Mr. Fryer, who is black, told The New York Times that the finding of no racial discrimination in police shootings was “the most surprising result of my career.”

At the same time, the study found blacks and Hispanics were more than 50 percent more likely to experience physical interactions with police, including touching, pushing, handcuffing, drawing a weapon, and using a baton or pepper spray.
