Siobhan Winograd graduated from Lafayette College in 1995 with a degree in Engineering. While at Tiffany & Co., Siobhan also earned her M.B.A. from Fordham University Business School. Her last day at Tiffany & Co. was March 11, 2004, the day her son, Liam, was born. AFP Ramps Up Opposition to Gas Tax Hike with “Running on Empty” Campaign

MONMOUTH JUNCTION – Americans for Prosperity, the state’s leading advocate for taxpayers, is launching a “Running on Empty” initiative today aimed at mobilizing grassroots opposition to Trenton’s proposed gas tax hike. The effort will include a petition drive and sweepstakes, an ad campaign and a number of events at gas retailers around the state.

Legislation pending in the Assembly would take the gas tax from about 15 cents a gallon up to 40 cents a gallon, a significant 25 cents per gallon hike.

“New Jersey taxpayers should be appalled by what’s going on in Trenton right now,” said AFP state director Daryn Iwicki. “Residents want tax relief not more tax hikes. Many have indicated they’d like to leave the state because of the crushing tax burden here. Yet, lawmakers are poised to triple the gas tax and they think they can get away with it despite the public saying no.”

“Still, many New Jersey motorists have no idea this is coming down the pike. Their costs of commuting to work, taking their kids to school, moving goods and services around the state and driving to Jersey Shore for their summer vacation will all go way up,” Iwicki went on to say. “Their budgets will take it a hit due to Trenton’s incompetence in managing the TTF and its insatiable appetite for more of their hard-earned money to cover for its past mistakes. And because this is a regressive tax, low-income families will feel the brunt of it.”

“AFP is going to make sure residents know that Trenton is ready to slam them again with another big tax hike and we’ll be mobilizing them to apply grassroots pressure on Gov. Christie and their representatives in the Legislature to oppose any gas tax hike.”

AFP’s “Running on Empty” events will be held over the course of the next two weeks to educate motorists on the issue and ask them to sign on to the pro-taxpayer group’s “Don’t Triple the Gas Tax” petition. All petition signers will be entered into a sweepstakes to win a $300 gift card to cover the extra expense that would be imposed by a 25-cents-per gallon gas tax hike.

“As outlined in tonight’s speech, President Obama is pressing hard to continue to advance his ideological agenda at the expense of our economy.  The president talks about bringing in ‘more revenue’ and ‘investing’ it.  But you and I both know that this is a fancy way of saying he wants to tax you more so he can spend more.

“The answer isn’t higher taxes; it’s about creating more jobs.  It’s time for the president to stop creating jobs at the IRS and get out of the way of the job creators in New Jersey and the rest of America.  The first step in this process is working with Congress to enact real, meaningful tax reform that will lower rates, simplify the code, and close special-interest loopholes.

“The Federal Highway Administration tracks all revenues collected by states for use on transportation. The two main sources are the gas tax and tolls. NJ gasoline taxes are low, but the state’s toll collections rank second in the nation behind only the much larger New York. The result is that NJ actually has, according to the Feds, the eighth highest annual revenues to devote to roads and bridges of any state. And yet the NJ Transportation Fund is bust? Why you ask? According to a 2013 study by the Reason Foundation, NJ spends 8.4 TIMES the national average for every mile of road it maintains or builds… it’s not because of the low gas tax, it’s because of inflated union wage rates to build & maintain roads at 8X the national average.

Reader says , We all know that the transportation fund is a black hole of graft an corruption. Why else do the unions want it fully funded? Also gotta love how Senate Budget Committee Chairman Paul Sarlo sees no alternative other than raising the gas tax, but then in the next breath he proposes lowering or doing away with taxes on pension benefits!!! How are the two related you ask? Good question, but probably too difficult for our union hacks to answer because they love riding this gravy train.

The fight over New Jersey’s nearly-broke transportation fund ratcheted up two notches Tuesday when Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox called for immediate safety inspections on every bridge in the state and local officials were warned not to count on $200 million in state transportation aid this year.

If the transportation fund is empty on July 1, that could throw into limbo an additional $100 million in matching federal aid for towns, endanger scores of road and bridge projects, and cause fiscal headaches for local officials. It also might increase pressure on the Legislature and Governor Christie to fix the transportation fund quickly, some politicians said.

Fox’s inspection order came hours after the collapse of an interstate bridge in Cincinnati, and after the department closed a smaller bridge in New Jersey that engineers discovered was unsafe.

“I’ve ordered an expedited review of all our bridges, state and local,” Fox said. “I’d rather be safe than sorry, so we know definitively whether we have any unsafe bridges.”

Fox’s move illustrates how depleted the transportation fund has become. Officially called the Transportation Trust Fund, it raises $1.2 billion a year, mostly from highway tolls and motor fuels taxes. After years of state borrowing against the fund’s revenues, however, nearly all of the money raised goes to paying the fund’s $18.2-billion debt, and little remains for repair or construction work.

A group of residents was at odds with the planner retained by a telecommunications firm hoping to build a cellular antenna atop the cross at West Side Presbyterian Church.

According to James Kyle, a planner for Verizon Wireless, the inherent benefits of a properly placed and concealed antenna at that location would outweigh the detriments, which, during a Jan. 13 Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting, he said the company has “gone to great lengths to minimize.”

Verizon is seeking a use and height variance from the zoning board to build what representatives are calling a 2-foot tall “micro site” antenna at the top of the cross. The proposed equipment would help alleviate a significant gap in coverage north of West Ridgewood Avenue.

The antenna, which is not allowed in a residential zone, would bring the total building height to 68.5 feet where 30 feet is permitted by zoning regulations. Currently, the building stands at 65.5 feet when measured to the top of the cross.

“None of what we’re doing impacts the existing conditions,” Kyle said. He added that Verizon believes constructing smaller antennas on existing tall structures is “the new solution” and alternative to large, obtrusive monopoles.

Ridgewood NJ, Since the Ridgewood blog had come up more than once in the last few civility meetings Mayor Aronsohn and Jan Philips  reached out to us for an invite so we updated our Last Will and Testaments and graciously accepted .The meetings of the Civility Round Table  are held on  Tuesday’s, once a month at 7:30 PM in the Ridgewood Village Hall Senior’s Lounge. Residents are encouraged to attend .

The meeting started promptly at 7:30 and was to my mind well attended given the time of the year . Jan Phelps hosted the meeting , with Mayor Aronsohn and Councilwomen Hauck . Everyone introduced themselves representing various groups and organizations in the Village , from the BOE , the Planing Board , the Ridgewood Library ,several local clergy , the HSA’s , RBSA and may other fine organizations that serve Ridgewood as well as a few residents . The purpose as stated by the Mayor is to create a more civil discourse in the Village .

Civility is about more than just politeness, although politeness is a necessary first step. It is about disagreeing without disrespect, seeking common ground as a starting point for dialogue about differences, listening past one’s preconceptions, and teaching others to do the same. Civility is the hard work of staying present even with those with whom we have deep-rooted and fierce disagreements. It is political in the sense that it is a necessary prerequisite for civic action. The group seemed to agree that Ridgewood is a town where people like to excel , and that drive and those expectations create a very passionate , as you can see from blog comments and opinionated populace . People care about their community and thats a good thing , but many felt that sometimes we all go a bit to far .

We looked at the causes of incivility , the when and why .Sheila Brogan long time BOE member , felt that todays parents had a lot of additional pressure and  worried that in todays world their kids would have a hard time doing as well as they have done . She went on to speak about the changing times and how one could expect to have several careers over a life time  ,all this she  though made being a parent a lot harder than it was in the past  and a lot more pressure .

We managed to go till 8:08 be for someone mentioned the elephant in the room, “I want to talk about the blog”…….

I learned a lot , mostly that I am glad  I can sit in my PJ’s drinking coffee writing a blog getting yelled at by anonymous commenters ,and don’t have a tuff job like the RBSA people who are pulled in many directions ,by so many demands all at once .

There were interestingly a surprising large amount of blog enthusiasts there some open and some secret admirers .

While I could see there were some sore spots , like turf fields , PSEG ,sports issues , Valley Hospital , the Village Hall renovation and alas Marty Brooks the daggers were lowered for the night .

While anonymity of blog posters took a hit as expected some pointed out that even on facebook were you know who everyone is  the comments can be even nastier . A resident put it down to a type of “keyboard bravado.”

The economic prophet who foresaw the Lehman crisis with uncanny accuracy is even more worried about the world’s financial system going into 2015.

Beggar-thy-neighbour devaluations are spreading to every region. All the major central banks are stoking asset bubbles deliberately to put off the day of reckoning. This time emerging markets have been drawn into the quagmire as well, corrupted by the leakage from quantitative easing (QE) in the West.

“We are in a world that is dangerously unanchored,” said ,William White the Swiss-based chairman of the OECD’s Review Committee. “We’re seeing true currency wars and everybody is doing it, and I have no idea where this is going to end.”

Mr White is a former chief economist to the Bank for International Settlements – the bank of central banks – and currently an advisor to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans controlling Congress will focus on people’s concerns about jobs and health care and steer the country away from President Barack Obama’s failed policies, the newly minted senator delivering her party’s official response to the State of Union address said Tuesday.

In remarks that mixed calls for bipartisan cooperation with a flexing of GOP independence, freshman Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, cited Americans’ worries about stagnant wages, lost jobs and canceled health care coverage. She called on Obama to cooperate with Republicans to simplify the tax code by lowering rates and eliminating unspecified loopholes, and to ease trade barriers with Europe and Asia.

“Americans have been hurting, but when we demanded solutions, too often Washington responded with the same stale mindset that led to failed policies like Obamacare,” Ernst, referring to Obama’s health care overhaul, said in excerpts from her speech released before its delivery. “It’s a mindset that gave us political talking points, not serious solutions.”

Ernst’s speech marked her party’s first State of the Union response during the Obama presidency in which the GOP has had majorities in both the House and Senate. It came as Republicans are hoping to expand their appeal among women and minorities in advance of the 2016 presidential and congressional elections.

“We plan to make Washington focus on your concerns again,” she said. “We heard the message you sent in November, loud and clear.”

The evening’s speeches came as the economy has been adding muscle, with economic growth accelerating and unemployment falling. In his remarks, Obama said it was time to “turn the page” on years of war and economic weakness and turn to investments that would strengthen the country.

Safe and Simple Balance Techniques for Active Older Adults, a special presentation and class instruction, provided by Robin Abrett, will also be offered.

Balance problems are among the most common reasons that older adults seek help from a doctor. Having good balance means being able to control and maintain your body’s position, whether you are moving or remaining still. From 11:45am to 12:15pm, Safe and Simple Balance Techniques for Active Older Adults will explain simple techniques to help improve balance.

Mayor Paul Aronsohn will be holding a Roundtable meeting to discuss related to more civility in our public discourse. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 20th at 7:30pm in the Senior Lounge at Village Hall.

Rev. Jan Phillips will lead the discussion. We will drill down on ways to take the civility conversation forward.

Obama plays Robin Hood

The White House wants President Obama to play the part of Robin Hood at Tuesday’s State of the Union address.

Obama hopes to use the big speech to remove a blemish of his presidency: an economic recovery that has left wage growth behind.

Free community college. A $175 billion tax cut for the middle class. Faster, cheaper broadband internet. A week of paid sick leave. Discounted mortgages.

Obama wants to move forward with all of these populist proposals for the poor and middle class, and he wants to do so by taking from the rich in the form of higher taxes on the wealthy and Wall Street.

Few of the proposals are going anywhere with a GOP Congress, but the White House sees Obama’s penultimate State of the Union as the president’s last, best chance to lay down policy markers for the next two years —and to frame the 2016 battle for the White House.

Vitamin D deficiency can affect seasonal depression, study says

Low vitamin D may be a culprit in winter depression

Vitamin D deficiency might impact mental health and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a depression linked to changes in the season, according to research recently published in Medical Hypotheses.

Seasonal depression, or SAD, is believed to affect up to 10 percent of the population, depending upon geographical location.

Based on researchers’ findings, vitamin D was likely to be a contributing factor in seasonal depression in that vitamin D levels fluctuate in the body seasonally, in direct relation to seasonally available sunlight.

Vitamin D is also involved in the synthesis of serotonin and dopamine within the brain, both chemicals linked to depression, according to the researchers.
