Save the Salt
Here’s one common ingredient to leave out. Wait on the salt! Don’t combine it into the mixture, especially if you’re not going to grill the patties right away. Salt will extract moisture from the meat, leaving you with bone-dry burgers. Instead, sprinkle each burger with salt right beforeyou put it on the grill.

This Memorial Holiday weekend you and I will enjoy many privileges and freedoms.
We will travel freely throughout the state or perhaps to another state. We may go to a concert to hear the band of your choice. Many of us will go to church to worship God as we see fit. Some of us will go to parades in your community; and others will go shopping and have at our disposal variety of goods and services found almost nowhere else in the world. Many of us will freely assemble in a park or a stadium or just enjoy the quiet of our backyards. Some of us will log on to the internet, read a variety of news reports offering differing opinions and some of us will leave our opinions, critical or in favor of a government action or elected leader.
These things we routinely do as Americans, but we seldom think of how fortunate we are to have these privileges. This weekend offers us a poignant reminder that our personal and political freedom was paid for by men and women who gave their lives in defense of liberty and in the face of tyrants. It’s a time of solemn remembrance and a reminder that the price of liberty is often very high.
As the listing below illustrates, since World War Two well in excess of 500,000 American military men and women died in the service of our country.
Their willingness to pay the ultimate price has not only preserved freedom here and abroad, but has sent a signal throughout the world to dictators, terrorists and zealots that Americans will fight and die for a just cause no matter how far from our shores.

Glen Rock cops make arrest in alleged credit-card fraud ring at gas stations

A Lodi man has been charged with multiple offenses following a four-month Glen Rock police investigation into an alleged credit-card fraud ring that skimmed victims’ information at local gas stations.
Kenny Frias, 42, is charged with money laundering, trafficking in personal information of another and fraudulent use of credit card, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release.
Frias is allegedly part of a ring that supplied gas station attendants with skimming devices to fraudulently obtain credit card information from victims and then used that information to make purchases, mostly of alcohol, at various locations throughout the state. The alcohol then allegedly was sold at the Phebe Night Club and Restaurant in Jersey City, where Frias is a manager.Frias was arrested Wednesday by Glen Rock police in Clifton and remained Friday in the Bergen County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail without a 10 percent bonding option.
Police do not know how many gas stations, stores or victims were caught up in the alleged scheme, though they estimate the number of victims could be in the hundreds or thousands, Glen Rock police Detective James Calaski said. The investigation is ongoing.
“If suspects are using stolen credit cards in my jurisdiction, they’re usually doing it in other jurisdictions as well,” Calaski said.
Police searched Frias’ residence and place of business Wednesday with a warrant and seized a credit card reading and writer device, fraudulent credit cards, false identification and more than $75,000 in cash.

Star on the rise for former Ridgewood resident Andy Daly

Andy Daly, the star of the new critically acclaimed Comedy Central series “Review,” is making a career out of playing outrageous, absurdly ridiculous characters – one of his favorites being a straight-laced, stuffy suburbanite with a cringe-worthy dark side that spirals out of control.
Ridgewood High School graduate Andy Daly is the star of the Comedy Central series “Review.”
And the star’s Ridgewood upbringing may have something to do with it.
It at least provided some inspiration for his “Review” character Forrest MacNeil, a critic who lives in the suburbs and reviews “life” for viewers of his TV show (within the actual show). In the just-completed first season, he manages to comically end his happy marriage, inadvertently cause the death of a beloved family member, and briefly get addicted to cocaine, among other catastrophes.
“It’s sort of hard to explain exactly, but yeah, the decision to have him be a very suburban guy with a wife and a kid on a tree-lined street … definitely feels like it comes out of my Ridgewood background,” said Daly, who graduated from Ridgewood High School (RHS) in 1989 and now lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two daughters.
“Of course – then he ends up being dragged into the gutter,” he observed.

Click It or Ticket campaign in N.J. is looking for more than seat belts

The yearly Click It or Ticket campaign aimed at increasing seat-belt use is turning into a catchall for police departments across New Jersey, which are writing more tickets for violations such as hand-held cellphone use, expired registrations and reckless driving, than for failing to buckle up, according to state data.
As studies show that more and more New Jersey drivers are buckling up, the number of seat-belt summonses issued by police departments funded by the federal program has dropped, and tickets issued for other infractions have soared during the annual two-week campaign, raising questions about whether the effort still serves its stated purpose..
An analysis by The Record of statewide Click It or Ticket data found that police wrote 20,000 tickets to seat-belt and child-restraint scofflaws statewide under the program in 2013, down by more than half from the 53,200 written in 2007. At the same time, the number handed out for all other violations has jumped from 33,400, to 44,000. As a result, only about 30 percent of tickets written under the program now are issued for seat-belt infractions.
Police departments in Hackensack, South Hackensack, Garfield, Northvale and the city of Passaic are among those in Bergen and Passaic counties seeing significant drop-offs.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Department of Agriculture has warned of sticker shock facing home chefs on the eve of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the unofficial start of the U.S. summer grilling season
The agency said conditions in California could have “large and lasting effects on U.S. fruit, vegetable, dairy and egg prices,” as the most populous U.S. state struggles through what officials are calling a catastrophic drought.
The consumer price index (CPI) for U.S. beef and veal is up almost 10 percent so far in 2014, reflecting the fastest increase in retail beef prices since the end of 2003. Prices, even after adjusting for inflation, are at record highs.

As a third-year medical student in the 1990s, my wife did her surgical rotation at a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facility. “The guys were great,” she says, referring to the patients. “But the place was a dump.”
She keeps remembering the flies that circled over a patient in an operating room during an open heart procedure.
A friend of mine, a Vietnam vet, experienced the VHA from the other side, as a patient. He couldn’t get in to see a specialist during one of his bouts of health trouble so a nurse got on Skype and described his heart beat to a physician a hundred miles away.
There is such a thing as telemedicine, which brings far-flung patients closer to medical care through the miracle of electronic connections. Saying “thump-a-thump-a-thump-a…” into an old Dell laptop ain’t it.
The VHA’s problems go far beyond secret waiting lists and canceled appointments. Yes, it’s bad that facilities delay the delivery of care to veterans into a future sometimes so distant that the would-be patients are more of a concern for morticians than for physicians by the time they make it to the front of the line. But the sad fact is that the care they finally receive often sucks.
In 2010, well before the current scandal, the Los Angeles Times reported, “Many veterans wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan are being buffeted by a VA disability system clogged by delays, lost paperwork, redundant exams, denials of claims and inconsistent diagnoses.”
Secretary of State John Kerry has agreed to testify before the House Oversight Committee about the terror attack in Benghazi after being subpoenaed by Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the State Department announced Friday.
State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said Kerry had sent a letter to Issa informing him that he would appear before the panel, but that existing diplomatic responsibilities would prevent him from testifying on May 29, the date requested by the chairman.
Kerry said he would be willing to testify on either June 12 or June 20.
The letter also indicated that the State Department believes that, if Kerry appeared before the Oversight panel, he would not need to testify before a recently created select House committee also investigating the Benghazi attacks.
“We have been clear that we’re willing to work with the committee, despite the fact that the Benghazi oversight has been consolidated under the select committee,” Harf said Friday.
“We believe the secretary’s appearance before HOGR [House Oversight and Government Reform] will eliminate any need for the secretary to appear a second time before the select committee,” she added.
Issa has demanded that Kerry appear before the Oversight panel to discuss recently released emails highlighting the role the White House had a in preparing then-U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice to appear in TV interviews in the days after the attack.

Ridgewood passed and is implementing a plan to remove two lanes of traffic at the Franklin Ave underpass. No one was given advance notice, no public input was sought, no comprehensive traffic study was done and the plan is very flawed with serious potential safety and traffic consequences.
This area is already a known bottleneck and removing lanes stands to:
1. Create major traffic backups on Godwin, West Ridgewood, Franklin Aves and Broad Street;
2. Cause drivers to divert onto residential side streets, filled with kids, to avoid the underpass. They are already diverting onto Doremus, Ackerman, Heights & Crest;
3. Hurt downtown businesses, by pushing West Side residents to shop in Midland Park instead of Ridgewood to avoid the underpass traffic;
4. Plus, the plans include an ill-conceived bike lane, which is also to be used by Emergency Vehicles (Police, Ambulances and Fire) to bypass the single-lane traffic. This is a blind curve and children riding here will be hit! Drivers entering the plan’s very limited turn lanes will also have to cross this bike lane. It makes no sense, yet the Village is going ahead with this dangerous plan.
Village Residents want the Council to stop work until a comprehensive traffic study is done (ASAP!) and input from Residents is heard. While we support changes that improve traffic and safety, this one does neither and has the potential to make both situations worse.
Even though work has started, we believe there is still time for the Village to modify the ill-conceived parts of the plan. They can narrow the proposed median in order to maintain 2 lanes of vehicle traffic each way, while elimating the unecessary, death-trap bike lane. They can still proceed with certain desirable elements of the plan, like the sidewalk bump out to narrow the crosswalk on Broad Street, etc.
Ridgewood must not proceed with the flawed plan. The risks of completing the project as-is far outweigh the benefits.

The (SEIU )union’s event planners had rented 32 buses, ensured they had prominent civil rights leaders in tow for photo-ops as they stormed the company’s entrance and, while they had some of McDonald’s 440,000 U.S. employees, the vast majority of protesters (about 84%, according toBloomberg’s numbers) appear to be nothing more than a rent-a-mob (or astroturf, as the case may be):
The event, the latest in a series of demonstrations by workers demanding $15-an-hour pay and the right to form a union, began at 1 p.m. local time yesterday, on the eve of McDonald’s Corp.’s shareholder meeting.
About 2,000 protesters, including about 325 McDonald’s workers in restaurant uniforms, stormed though the company’s campus entrance at Jorie Boulevard and Kroc Drive in Oak Brook, according to the organizers, holding signs that said, “We Are Worth More” and “My Union My Voice.” The Oak Brook Police Department estimated the number was 1,000 to 1,500.
The protesters — brought to the scene by 32 buses — were joined by Service Employees International Union President Mary Kay Henry and William Barber, an official from the NAACP, the nation’s oldest civil rights organization. About 110 people were arrested for trespassing, police said. The protesters who were arrested included McDonald’s (MCD) workers and 36 community, clergy and labor leaders, including Henry, according to the organizers. [Emphasis added.]
When the SEIU originally launched the fast-food unionization campaign in 2011 (over a year after its plan was exposed), the SEIU boss had initially tried to portray it as a “spontaneous movement.” However, the spontaneous movement portrayal quickly dissolved as the SEIU’s role in the campaign planning became more apparent.

Volunteers arriving at Veteran’s Field for the Ridgewood Run on Monday, May 26th are asked to park in the lot on the corner of Linwood Ave and Northern Parkway ACROSS from Graydon Pool. All participants are encouraged to leave any purses, bags, backpacks, etc. at home. If you must bring personal items, please check them at the Baggage Tent next to the baseball backstop. No bags will be permitted along the race course or near the finish line. Any vehicle on the course or on the field must display an “OFFICIAL RACE VEHICLE” placard. The Fred d’Elia Memorial Day Ridgewood Run is a family-focused day of events that provide a fun environment in a festive open-park atmosphere. Seven distinct events provide the center of activity. They start at 8:15 AM and continue until after the conclusion of the Fun Run at noon. The road races are run through the tree-lined streets of the Village of Ridgewood NJ. Ridgewood is located in Bergen County bordering Rockland, Westchester, and New York counties.

Frank Schott has called Ridgewood his hometown for more than five decades, but his neighborhood extends well beyond the village’s borders. Throughout the 87-year-old’s lifetime, Schott has offered his ideas, expertise and passion to nearly everyone who asked for his assistance.
Last week, Schott was honored with a Ridgewood Council proclamation that recognized his contributions as a citizen and longtime member of various village boards and committees. He is frequently linked to the Open Space Committee, of which he was a charter member when it was founded in 2001 and served for 13 years until he retired in late 2013.
“He had a passion that drove the committee … and because of his leadership, we have what we have today,” said Councilman Tom Riche, who previously served as liaison to the committee and worked closely with Schott over the past several years. “Because of Frank, our children and grandchildren … will have all these wonderful parks.”
