This year, Old Man Winter has been a real pain in the neck. And in the shoulders. And in the lower back.
Especially the lower back, says Artie Beltramba, 52, of Little Falls. One of the season’s first storms left him in crippling pain after a round of shoveling.
“It was like somebody stabbed me in the back with a knife,” he said. “I couldn’t do anything.”
For five days he was basically bedridden, nearly unable to sit up without screaming, using ice packs, heating pads and aspirin to dull the pain. It eventually went away, but every time he has to shovel again — “like every three days” — it flares up again.
Beltramba is hardly alone. North Jersey doctors reported seeing an increased number of patients with shoveling-related pain and injuries this winter.
And the recent wet, heavy snow hasn’t made things easier. Dr. Asit K. Shah, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center’s associate chief of the Department of Orthopedics, said it’s “great for snowball fights, but sucks for the back.”
“Shoveling is a pretty intense exercise,” Shah added. “It’s like working out at a gym.”

Twenty-two homes sold in Ridgewood, NJ last month. That’s more than double the number that sold in January of 2013. And not only was activity up 120%, the average sold price was up 15%
That’s a good indication of what kind of year is ahead for the local real estate market. Rising interest rates combined with rising prices are motivating buyers to move quickly.
Things are shaping up a little differently in February with the weather playing a significant role. Snow has kept activity down for the first 20 days of the month.
At the time of this writing there are only 54 residential homes on the market. 323 have sold in the last twelve months. That equates to an inventory level of just two months, a very low number even for this time of the year.
With the weather improving, we’re likely to see more homes hitting the market and some very busy open houses in the near future.

A dominant voice in victim-advocacy and research on domestic violence stands accused of flatly fabricating data.

Jacquelyn C. Campbell, a professor in the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, is accused of fabricating “key statements [about domestic violence] and then representing the statements as findings of a government survey.” On January 14, the victim-advocacy organization Stop Abusive and Violent Environments (SAVE) filed a formal complaint with the Office of Research Integrity of the Department of Health and Human Services. SAVE wants the unit to “investigate these allegations of research misconduct by Dr. Campbell and colleagues, and take appropriate corrective action.” (As of January 31, the complaint has been rejected and the rejection is being appealed.)
Specific Accusations
In two highly respected journals, Campbell and various colleagues claimed that “the leading cause of death in the United States among African American women aged 15 to 45 years” was homicide. In the American Journal of Public Health Vol. 93, No. 7, 2003, page 1089, the deaths were described as “femicide, the homicide of women.” In the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Journal 2003, page 18, the deaths were ascribed to “intimate partner violence” or domestic violence homicide.
Attorney General Eric Holder repeated the domestic violence version of the statistic in a 2009 speech; he stated, “Disturbingly, intimate partner homicide is the leading cause of death for African-American women ages 15 to 45.” The statistic was posted in at least two places at the Department of Justice (DOJ) website. The conservative feminist Christina Hoff Sommers took exception. In USA Today (Feb. 4, 2011), she wrote, “That’s a horrifying statistic, and it would be a shocking reflection of the black family, and American society generally, if it were true. But it isn’t true.”
Over two years later, the Washington Post fact checker, Glenn Kessler investigated Holder’s statement and published his results. Kessler wrote that CDC “data show that, for the year 2008 (the year before Holder’s speeches), cancer, heart disease, unintentional injury and HIV/AIDS all topped homicide. Then if you break out intimate-partner homicide, that ends up being seventh or eighth on the list (depending on whether you also include all homicides.)” As a basis of comparison, in 2008, cancer killed 1,871 black females; heart disease, 1,629; all homicides, 326.

The former Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko, has been freed from prison and said that she is certain that the country will now join the EU, just hours after MPs voted to oust President Viktor Yanukovych.
“Our homeland will from today on be able to see the sun and sky as a dictatorship has ended,” Tymoshenko told reporters after her release from the hospital where she had been held under prison guard for most of the time since she was jailed in 2011.

Universities in FCC Newsroom Probe Have Close Ties to Soros, Got $1.8M in Funding

The FCC may have suspended its invasion into American newsrooms, but the controversial “Critical Information Needs” study also has George Soros’ fingerprints all over it.
While disturbing, this should come as no surprise since Soros’ gave more than $52 million to media organizations from 2000-2010.
Two schools were working with FCC on the project, according to Byron York of The Washington Examiner. The University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Communication and Democracy, were tasked by the FCC with coming up with criteria for what information is “critical” for Americans to have. The FCC study would have covered newspapers, websites, radio and television, according to The Washington Post.
On top of the 1st Amendment problems with this proposal, the schools involved have strong ties to liberal billionaire George Soros’ Open Society Foundations and have gotten more than $1.8 million from since 2000.

– Food Stamps are up a whopping 160 percent because of chronic unemployment.
This is just a sampling of hundreds of depressing statistics that have occurred under this administration.
Yet despite all of these abuses, the Obama Administration continues to pursue a staunchly liberal agenda marked by the mega growth and inefficiency of government bureaucracy.
This President has created an entangled web of job-crippling regulations and decreasing opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds. This must be reversed.
I will be blunt. I am a conservative Republican who has and will fight every day for the conservative principles on which this country was built.
I despise the machinations and harms created by a bloated out-of-control government.
I am opposed to big government and excessive and immorally high taxes – period.
I am prolife – period.
I support the Second Amendment – period.
I believe the family is the cornerstone of our society.
If you send me to Congress to be your voice, I’ll stand against President Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. I will tell them in no uncertain terms, that New Jersey’s 3rd Congressional District will not stand by and allow them to trample our Constitutional liberties and eradicate future opportunities for our children and grandchildren.

The facts in this case are being pronounced by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a nonpartisan federal agency that crunches numbers for the government, which concluded that raising the federal minimum wage would actually reduce employment.
CBO’s findings are nothing new, of course. As we know, calls to raise the minimum wage are simply fodder for the President’s liberal base. And as Heritage’s James Sherk has pointed out on numerous occasions, raising the federal minimum wage would actually hurt low-income workers by forcing businesses to cut jobs—making it more difficult for unskilled workers to gain the experience necessary to get ahead.
But what makes these latest findings interesting is that the White House has been quick to discredit the very agency it has touted in the past to enact and promote its progressive policies

Governor Christie’s budget is facing a shortfall of more than $400 million, a deficit that could cause him to make midyear cuts to the current $33 billion spending plan just as he prepares to pitch his latest state budget on Tuesday.A memo from the Office of Legislative Services obtained by The Record on Friday showed the growing shortfall.
Assembly Budget Committee Chairman Gary Schaer, D-Passaic, said he’s “deeply concerned” the shortfall could mean midyear cuts are coming that could affect New Jersey’s working families. Christie will address the revenue and budget issues in more detail during his address to the Legislature on Tuesday, a spokesman said.
“I sincerely hope the governor’s speech on Tuesday is an honest discussion about the budget problems New Jersey faces,” Schaer said.
Senate Budget and Appropriations Chairman Paul Sarlo, D-Wood-Ridge, said the revenue problems are setting the table for tough budget negotiations leading up to the start of the new state fiscal year on July 1.
“Difficult decisions need to be made,” Sarlo said.
ObamaCare tax cost 33,000 jobs, medical trade group says

WASHINGTON — A new ObamaCare tax on medical devices has already resulted in the loss of about 33,000 jobs in the industry, according to a prominent health-care trade association.
The grim statistic negates claims this week by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that “there is absolutely no evidence . . . that there is any job loss related to the Affordable Care Act.”
The Advanced Medical Technology Association surveyed its members to determine the number of lost jobs since the 2.3 percent excise tax on medical devices took effect in January 2013, raising about $3.8 billion a year to help pay for ObamaCare.
The survey found that nearly a third of respondents had cut research and development because of the tax, and almost 10 percent had moved manufacturing abroad.
The job losses were put at about 14,000, with another 19,000 openings that were left unfilled.

Fire hydrants. They’re not just doggy comfort stations, it turns out.
A Garfield firefighter hooking up a hydrant after clearing snow from it – costing valuable minutes — during a house fire Tuesday. The responsibility for keeping hydrants clear of snow varies from town to town.
But on snowy winter days, as Rodney Dangerfield might have said, fire hydrants get no respect. Not from contractors plowing snow from the streets, and not from homeowners shoveling out their driveways.
It seems nobody even misses those ever-faithful neighborhood sentries, standing at the ready to be pressed into service, even when they are covered in many feet of mounded-up snow. Nobody misses them, at least until a fire breaks out, as one did in Garfield on Tuesday, and firefighters have to spend precious minutes chopping ice and snow before they can hook up hoses.
Of course, that’s not supposed to be how it works. What’s supposed to happen is that someone — exactly who that someone is depends on the ordinances in the municipality — is required to make sure that hydrants are accessible when they are needed.

Amelia Maas knows that her idea will not solve all traffic problems in the Central Business District, but the Ridgewood teen hopes her proposal will reduce the number of pedestrian accidents in town.As part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Maas, a member of Troop 1380, presented her plan to bring crosswalk flags to Ridgewood and arm pedestrians — specifically for those navigating across the village’s busiest thoroughfares — with a simple tool that will alert motorists when an individual is crossing the street.
“Pedestrian visibility, or lack thereof, contributes to more than 60 percent of accidents in crosswalks. When a driver is unable to see obstacles that are in the way, collisions are unavoidable,” said Maas, 17.
Her pitch, delivered at a Ridgewood Council meeting earlier this month, is an inexpensive and relatively uncomplicated remedy to one of the downtown’s biggest headaches. The project, as proposed by Maas, calls for the placement of brightly colored flags at targeted intersections.

Unsecured tarp will damage Schedler House

To the editor:I am very disappointed in the failed promise, at a public hearing, that the tarp would be reinforced on the roof of Schedler House, at the latest, Jan. 21. The tarp is leaking in one section and will cause rot to the otherwise sturdy house as water gets inside the beams. Reasons given for the repeated delays were height of the house, need to get a fire department vehicle with a longer ladder and danger due to ice and snow.I certainly understand that no employee should be placed in a dangerous situation. The employees of Ridgewood work very hard and deserve every protection. Any fault lies squarely on the shoulders of our ineffective council. If they acted when they were asked, repeatedly, during late summer and early fall, this would be a non-issue. When the council finally acted, winter was upon us.
When The Ridgewood News reported that the tarp was secured (“Neighbors join talk on property,” Feb. 7, page A1), the newspaper also took the word given.

The Game Changed in Venezuela Last Night – and the International Media Is Asleep At the Switch

Listen and understand. The game changed in Venezuela last night. What had been a slow-motion unravelling that had stretched out over many years went kinetic all of a sudden.
What we have this morning is no longer the Venezuela story you thought you understood.
Throughout last night, panicked people told their stories of state-sponsored paramilitaries on motorcycles roaming middle class neighborhoods, shooting at people and storming into apartment buildings, shooting at anyone who seemed like he might be protesting.
People continue to be arrested merely for protesting, and a long established local Human Rights NGO makes an urgent plea for an investigation into widespread reports of torture of detainees. There are now dozens of serious human right abuses: National Guardsmen shooting tear gas canisters directly into residential buildings. We have videos of soldiers shooting civilians on the street.
And that’s just what came out in real time, over Twitter and YouTube, before any real investigation is carried out. Online media is next, a city of 645,000 inhabitants has been taken off the internet amid mounting repression, and this blog itself has been the object of a Facebook “block” campaign.
What we saw were not “street clashes”, what we saw is a state-hatched offensive to suppress and terrorize its opponents.
