Casual restaurants, better service?

RESTAURANT REVIEWER

One result of my recent maternity leave was that I mostly stayed out of white-tablecloth-type restaurants for several months. For obvious reasons, it was more practical to stick to burger joints, diners or order-at-the-counter eateries when dining with a baby.

But then a very strange thing started to happen.

I realized that I had never been so happy with the service I was receiving.

That the guy behind the counter at Bobby’s Burger Palace in Paramus seemed to know more about the burgers than many waiters do about $25 entrées. That the busboys in Smashburger locations all over the area made me feel more welcome than many pricey places.

Related: Young athletes feeling the pain of too much play

Everything slows down in the summer — everything except the youth sports world that engulfs so many North Jersey families.

Young athletes not playing summer games and tournaments are filling their days with camps, private lessons and “training” sessions, honing their skills at their selected sport. Children as young as 8 or 9 are specializing, choosing only one sport and playing it year round, a trend that has drastically increased in the last five to 10 years,

according to those involved in local youth sports. – See more at: https://www.northjersey.com/news/218320411_Youth_sports_culture_has_kids_specializing__playing_same_sport_year_round.html#sthash.CdElhY4j.dpuf

Readers debate Construction impact on School children

Wow… HUNDREDS of trucks all at the same time as drop off and pick up. Hard to imagine it would take HUNDREDS of trucks per day. I hope not. But, what above the expansion at Willard School — that went on while kids were in the building. What about the $40 million expasion (which took 2 years) of the train station. That included heavy sub-ground drilling within 1/2 mile of GW and directly in front of the Senior Housing. What above when West Side Pres was rebuilt dirctly next to GW? I know each of these was smaller, but in every case life went on as usual, and once it was done everyone got to enjoy the finished product.

or….

Schools are not comparable ever: their evolution is directly commensurate with the number of kids in town. Willard did not double in size, and West Side Pres only replaced a building that had been destroyed by fire. Whatever “enjoyment” (I, for one, don’t “enjoy” hospitals) we might get from the “finished product” (more traffic, etc.)—nothing outweighs what we will have to endure during construction, or the de-valuing of our homes, which is permanent…

Please don’t talk about the hospital serving Ridgewood!! Only 5% of Valley patients actually live here. Most Valley employees live elsewhere.

Readers share thoughts on Boyd Lovings Ridgewood News letter to the Editor

A year is enough of that self-serving blather. Sick of seeing his face on the editorial page, co-opting space needed for letters to the editor. All published series stop eventually. The time has come.

Agree with Boyd. This is a blatant billboard for the mayor and it should not be allowed. Can we have an anti-mayor corner column, in which all the problems he has caused can be highlighted?????

Mayor Paul Aronsohn and the Ridgewood “New Prefect Together” Hey Ed. Yes Paul. Only print the good stuff about me. Ok Paul just don’t cancel the legal advertisement because without the advertisement from the village and valley hospital the Ridgewood News would be down the tubes and I would have to get a job at the Patch. Hey Paul. Yes Ed. Do you have any connections at the Patch? Matter of fact I do Ed.

I don’t even notice it.

Reader asks what hospital do they brings the victims of said accidents to??? HACKENSACK!!!

The funny thing is, when you hear about serious accidents in town, what hospital do they brings the victims of said accidents to??? HACKENSACK!!!!

How many times have I read in the local papers that those injured in accidents, whether they be car accidents or whatever, were transported to Hackensack. Why is that?? Does Valley not have the capabilities to treat serious trauma cases??? or do those involved ask to be taken to Hackensack??

Has anybody asked to view the monthly occupancy rates at Valley as I doubt they have an issue with overcrowding – and if the occupancy rates show that admittance to Valley on an average monthly basis shows that at any given time, Valley has on average 50% occupancy, then Valley should be able to accommodate converting its existing structure to single bed rooms. This is based on serious trauma been treated at bigger hospitals.

The fact that they are paying outside experts to sell their square peg in a circle scenario is crazy – it would be very interesting to see what fees these experts are being paid and what previous jobs they have been involved in to see if they have been involved with Valley-like scenarios before and what those results have been.

Think about the pharmaceutical industry in which the big pharma companies paid ad agencies big money to promote their products to the masses only for these companies to hide data that showed their products killed people – think Vioxx – when the truth came out all the experts in the world, couldn’t hide the lies anymore.

Ridgewood NJ, Beware the change in our form of government…search the International City/County Management Association (ICMA).

A new manager is one thing as long as he is not tied to ANY member of the council.  The eradication of the manager’s position, however, being replaced by an elected mayor will cede all control to that mayor.

Based on his performance as both council member and mayor, Paul Aronsohn is the worst possible choice. Promises and lip service to any and all donors, special treatment and attention to his pets (John Saraceno, Nancy Greene, Terminal Construction, John Albano, Nancy Johansen) contempt for his colleagues… It has never been, nor will it ever be about Ridgewood. It’s all about a photo op, a name on a plaque, a “deal” he’s hoping to put together… and maybe, just maybe someone will notice him.  We’re noticing all right………

Embassy closings, travel warning renew debate over NSA data collection

Embassy closings, travel warning renew debate over NSA data collection

By Ali Watkins, David Lightman and Adam Baron | McClatchy Washington Bureau

WASHIGNTON — The closing of U.S. embassies in 21 predominantly Muslim countries and a broad caution about travel during August that the State Department issued on Friday touched off debate Sunday over the National Security Agency’s sweeping data collection programs.

Congressional supporters of the program, appearing on Sunday morning talk shows, said the latest rounds of warnings of unspecified threats showed that the programs were necessary, while detractors said there was no evidence linking the programs, particularly the massive collection of cell phone records of hundreds of millions of Americans, to the vague warnings of a possible terrorist attack.

State Department to keep some embassies closed, as lawmakers say terror threat ‘specific’ and ‘serious’

The State Department has announced that it will keep several embassies in the Middle East and Africa closed throughout the week “out of an abundance of caution” in the wake of terror threats that shut them down.

Posts in Abu Dhabi, Amman, Cairo, Riyadh, Dhahran, Jeddah, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait, Manama, Muscat, Sanaa, Tripoli, Antanarivo, Bujumbura, Djibouti, Khartoum, Kigali and Port Louis have been instructed to close for normal operations from Monday through Saturday, department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

The State Department also said some of those embassies were already going to be closed in accordance with local customs marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Those authorized to reopen Monday are in Dhaka, Algiers, Nouakchott, Kabul, Herat, Mazar el Sharif, Baghdad, Basrah and Erbil.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss says: Al Qaeda terror threat ‘most serious’ he’s seen in years

Members of both parties in Congress said on Sunday the threat that prompted the weekend shuttering of more than 20 U.S. embassies and consulates in the Muslim world is credible and real, with one senator calling it the “most serious threat I’ve seen in a number of years.”

Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, called it the “most serious threat I’ve seen in a number of years.

H.S. Girls Track & Field: Ridgewood’s Micaela McPadden bound for Rhode Island

RIDGEWOOD — Micaela McPadden wastes no time.

In her four years of varsity track and field at Ridgewood High School, the 5-foot-6 sprinter/hurdler built her reputation on getting to the point as quickly as possible — and often spoke about her races in similar fashion.

True to form, the affable McPadden was both fast and friendly in relating the reasons she chose the University of Rhode Island at RHS National Letter of Intent Media Day on June 12. She involuntarily showed another example of her perseverance that day as well, since she was battling a sore throat and partial loss of voice.

“I was looking at Loyola [in Baltimore] and UMass, too, but I always knew I wanted to go to Rhode Island,” she said. “I like the location, it’s close to the beach… it was just a good fit for me.”

When the recent Ridgewood High School grad announced her plans to row for the University of Delaware during RHS National Letter of Intent Media Day on June 12, she became the second Maroon in the past two years to commit to the Blue Hen women’s crew team.

Francis, 18, will join 2011 Ridgewood graduate Kaitlin Flood in Newark, Del. next season after enjoying a highly-successful senior campaign with Ridgewood Crew, a privately-funded club not affiliated with the high school but comprised chiefly of RHS students.

“I knew Kate was there, but I didn’t really talk to her much” during the recruiting process, Francis noted. “It will be good to know somebody who’s coming home to the same place [for breaks and holidays].”

RIDGEWOOD — Ridgewood bucked the odds when putting together its 9-and-under Little League program. Most towns place their best players on an A team and the rest on a B team. Not the Villagers, though.

“We had two teams, evenly divided in talent,” Ridgewood Americans manager John Saraceno said a few days after his team captured the District 4 championship. To win that title, the Americans had to get past the Ridgewood Nationals team in the final game, 8-3. –

JASON LINKER & GREG MASLAK, Ridgewood — These seniors were a tandem at the junior varsity level two years ago and reunited this year to give the Maroons a second straight Bergen Groups 3-4 championship at first doubles — the school’s fifth since 1988. Maslak was a second doubles county champion last year, while Linker played third singles, and it took them a bit of time to jell, as both missed an early week of the season while traveling.

Once they got it together, they won 12 of their last 13 matches (the loss coming in the North 1, Group 4 state team tournament) to finish 13-4 on the season, including a win over Shawn Diniz and James Yoon when the Northern Highlands pairing had to default for injury. Linker still dabbled at singles, winning his three dual matches, and had a win with another doubles partner, and Maslak was 1-2 as a singles player.
