Though Ridgewood declined to purchase a Mobi-Chair for use at Graydon Pool this season, officials have not ruled out the possibility that the floatable wheelchair might be a future accessibility tool at the municipal park.

Ridgewood’s Parks and Recreation Department opted not to buy the chair following a free, month-long trial offered by Cedar Grove distributor Deschamps Mat Systems. The village returned the chair to Deschamps last week.

According to Tim Cronin, director of the parks and recreation department, the device was incompatible with the pool because of the current condition of Graydon’s landscape, which is marked with uneven dimensions and various nooks and crannies. But he and the Graydon staff believe a Mobi-Chair has its place.

“We don’t feel that it fits Graydon. It does not fit on [existing] ramps,” he said, referring to the pool’s current non-ADA compliant ramps.

Tunnel contract secures future of New York rail expansion

Tunnel contract secures future of New York rail expansion
22 Jul, 2013

Tutor Perini has won a tunnelling contract worth $133 million which will ensure future plans to construct a rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River can go ahead.

A 250-metre long, 50-metre wide box tunnel will be built under the Eastern Rail Yard  – the future site of the Hudson Yards development.

The tunnel will ‘preserve an underground right-of-way’ safeguarding the future route of planned twin-bored tunnels beneath the Hudson River toward Penn Station.

Money to fund the project will come from the federal Hurricane Sandy relief fund.

The aim of the new tunnels, known as the Gateway Project, is to allow NJ Transit to increase rail capacity by adding an extra 13 trains an hour and Amtrak an extra eight services an hour between New Jersey and New York City.

Work was originally due to be completed by late 2014.

The Gateway Project was developed following the cancellation of ARC Tunnel, and is expected to cost around $14.7 billion.

“New Jersey is facing a transportation crisis,” said Amtrak chief executive Joe Boardman, in a statement which first confirmed Amtrak’s plans to support the project.

Steve Lonegan Signs Climate Pledge, Challenges Opponents to Oppose Climate Related Taxes

Steve Lonegan Signs Climate Pledge, Challenges Opponents to Oppose Climate Related Taxes

“As our economy struggles to recover under President Obama’s heavy hand, the last thing we need is more regulations and taxes. A cap-and-trade tax would have a devastating effect on all New Jerseyans, and would hit our already struggling manufacturing sector especially hard.”

METUCHEN, NJ – Republican U.S. Senate candidate Steve Lonegan signed the Americans for Prosperity No Climate Tax Pledge, opposing any climate change legislation that includes a net increase in government revenue. Mayor Lonegan challenged Cory Booker and the other candidates in the race to sign the pledge and protect New Jersey taxpayers and businesses from hidden taxes.

The pledge simply states that Mayor Lonegan will “oppose any legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in government revenue.”

President Obama has pushed for a cap-and-trade tax that would make every energy-consuming activity automatically more expensive. The result of this tax will mean higher energy prices, fewer jobs and little to no demonstrable affect on our environment.

Several studies have demonstrated the harmful effects of a cap-and-trade program or carbon tax:

Cap-and-trade would cause gasoline prices to jump $1.73 per gallon by 2050 (Beacon Hill Institute)
A tax on emissions would increase domestic electricity prices by 12 percent, gasoline prices by 6 percent, natural gas prices by 43 percent, and coal prices by 110 percent (National Association of Manufacturers)
A carbon tax could result in 1.5 million lay-offs within the first year of a carbon tax alone and a 1 percent decrease in labor income (National Association of Manufacturers)
A $20/ton of carbon tax would sap $133 billion out of the economy each year over a 40-year period. (National Association of Manufacturers)

“I am proud to sign Americans for Prosperity’s No Climate Tax Pledge and challenge all my opponents to follow suit,” Mayor Lonegan said. “As our economy struggles to recover under President Obama’s heavy hand, the last thing we need is more regulations and taxes. A cap-and-trade tax would have a devastating effect on all New Jerseyans, and would hit our already struggling manufacturing sector especially hard.

“Last week Cory Booker introduced another plan filled with pricey taxpayer-funded giveaways – what he called his job plan. But if Cory Booker really wants to create jobs, the first thing he should do is to stop supporting policies that destroy jobs. Signing the No Climate Tax Pledge would be a good start.”

The Decline of the Civil-Rights Establishment

The Decline of the Civil-Rights Establishment

Black leaders weren’t so much outraged at injustice as they were by the disregard of their own authority.

By
SHELBY STEELE

The verdict that declared George Zimmerman not guilty of murdering Trayvon Martin was a traumatic event for America’s civil-rights establishment, and for many black elites across the media, government and academia. When you have grown used to American institutions being so intimidated by the prospect of black wrath that they invent mushy ideas like “diversity” and “inclusiveness” simply to escape that wrath, then the crisp reading of the law that the Zimmerman jury displayed comes as a shock.

On television in recent weeks you could see black leaders from every background congealing into a chorus of umbrage and complaint. But they weren’t so much outraged at a horrible injustice as they were affronted by the disregard of their own authority. The jury effectively said to them, “You won’t call the tune here. We will work within the law.”

George Zimmerman Emerged From Hiding for Truck Crash Rescue

By MATT GUTMAN (@mattgutmanABC) and ALEXIS SHAW (@ashaw109)
July 22, 2013

George Zimmerman, who has been in hiding since he was acquitted of murder in the death of Trayvon Martin, emerged to help rescue a family who was trapped in an overturned vehicle, police said today.

Zimmerman was one of two men who came to the aid of a family of four — two parents and two children — trapped inside a blue Ford Explorer SUV that had rolled over after traveling off the highway in Sanford, Fla. at approximately 5:45 p.m. Thursday, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The crash occurred at the intersection of I-4 and route Route 46, police said. The crash site is less than a mile from where Zimmerman shot Martin.

Residents air concerns over tall utility poles

Residents air concerns over tall utility poles

The Ridgewood News

Some Ridgewood residents claim they were blindsided when PSE&G crews showed up in their neighborhoods earlier this month and began installing new utility poles that – at 65 feet high – appear twice as tall as some of the existing poles.

To compound the problem, homeowners on Spring Avenue and Hope Street are equally angered and worried because the new poles will be outfitted with power lines carrying as much as 69,000 volts of electricity. In comparison, most electrical wires that run through residential areas transmit 13,000 volts.

Those residents, many of whom have mobilized to form a community action group dubbed ICARE (Individuals Concerned About Residential Electricity), are now calling on the village’s elected officials to intervene, with several dozen of them petitioning the Ridgewood Council for help last week.

Payment deadline extended for Ridgewood Water bills

Payment deadline extended for Ridgewood Water bills

The Ridgewood News

Ridgewood Water customers have been granted a longer-than-usual payment deadline extension, a move that utility officials believe will assist residents who were impacted by a recent billing interruption.

A computer software upgrade at the village’s water company was cited for the delay of mailed invoices covering the first three months of 2013. The software change was discussed and planned last year, but the initial switch did not go as expected.

Prior to the changes, the water department used the same billing service for approximately 13 years without any upgrades, explained David Scheibner, Ridgewood Water’s business director. The upgrades prepared last year by the service provider were “actually welcomed news” and “we were looking forward to the new improvements,” he said.

“The fact of reality was it was not the improvement we were expecting. And since the contract with that service was up at the end of [2012], we went through the process of finding a new provider,” Scheibner added. “So there was a period of time when we didn’t have a system.”

Ridgewood NJ , A mid afternoon downpour caused flash flooding at various locations in Ridgewood on Monday.  At the intersection of Spring Avenue and Hope Street, police and firefighters checked a stranded Buick sedan to ensure that all occupants had gotten out safely before rising water rendered the vehicle inoperable.  The vehicle was later removed by a flatbed tow truck.

North Jersey towns applying lessons learned from Superstorm Sandy

The Record

Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich remembers how difficult it was providing timely information to a frustrated and anxious public plunged into darkness, with no gas and limited or no Internet access, after Superstorm Sandy barreled into the state.

After daily conference calls with utilities and the governor’s office, Sokolich’s staff distributed hundreds of fliers with updates on power restoration, tree removal and street reopenings.

“It was incredibly time-consuming, but it was the only way to reach the public,” said Sokolich, whose borough sustained about $1 million in public damage from the storm.

Sokolich has learned his lesson and is determined not to be caught off-guard again. For example, Fort Lee is launching an emergency radio broadcast system to deliver local alerts.

With two major tropical storms slamming North Jersey in the last two years, municipalities are rethinking how they plan for and respond to natural disasters. In addition to Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and Sandy last year, the region has been subjected to a March 2010 nor’easter and an October 2011 snowstorm, both of which felled thousands of tree limbs and disrupted electrical power to hundreds of thousands. Municipalities now know they have to prepare for more frequent and disruptive weather events, not just occasional tropical storms and annual winter snowstorms.

Tito Burrito’s Online Ordering Coming Soon to Ridgewood

Tito’s Ridgewood  to offer online ordering soon . Ridgewood will join Tito’s Summit  and Tito’s Morristown  with online ordering . Online ordering saves time !

The History Of Tito

It is believed that Tito was born in a small beach village of Todos Santos, in the middle of Mexico’s Baja peninsula. Or maybe it was just outside of Hali ‘ewa, on the North Shore of Oahu. Then again, it might have been the town of Balboa, on the Pacific coast of Panama.

Truth is, no one’s quite sure where he’s from! Whenever asked, Tito simply leans back and scratches the growth on his chin and replies (using his own brand of language that we refer to as “Tito-speak”), “I come from da beach, brah. And no matter where I am, I will always be at da beach!” Spoken like a true hedonist!

It is that love for the hedonistic lifestyle of the beach, and the good times that come from it that is the soul of Tito’s Burritos!

Tito’s Burritos’ slogan is, “It’s all good!”, and that motto applies to the overall philosophy of our business. In other words, we are 100% committed to offering our customers nothing but goodness. That means the tastiest food, prepared and served in a casual and easy-going manner, at a good value. We use only the freshest ingredients in everything that we prepare, and every order is custom made the way that YOU want it. It might take a couple of minutes longer, but we’ll make sure that it’s worth the wait! If you’re eating here, kick back and enjoy the music, or the “wish I was there” TV, which runs the finest in hedonism It is our wish that you enjoy everything that Tito’s Burritos has to offer, and that your experience leaves you feeling that “It’s all good”!

Mahalo!

PS: You might see Tito around the shop every once in a while, but sightings are indeed rare! After all, you can’t be a true hedonist and a workaholic! And we love Tito just the way he is, so we’ll cut him a little slack if he only shows up occasionally for a little chow and to pick up some spending money!

Valet parked cars searched under TSA regulations

parking_theridgewoodblog.net

Valet parked cars searched under TSA regulations

Rochester, N.Y. — She says she had no warning that someone was going to search her car after she left to catch her flight. So the woman contacted News10NBC.

We found out it happened to her because she valet parked her car. Those are the only cars that get inspected.

So if security feels it is necessary to search some cars in the name of safety, why not search all of them?

Laurie Iacuzza walked to her waiting car at the Greater Rochester International Airport after returning from a trip and that’s when she found it — a notice saying her car was inspected after she left for her flight. She said, “I was furious. They never mentioned it to me when I booked the valet or when I picked up the car or when I dropped it off.”

Iacuzza’s car was inspected by valet attendants on orders from the TSA. But why only valet parked cars? That’s what News10NBC wanted to ask the TSA director about.  We reached him by phone.

Berkeley Brean asked, “Are the cars in the short term lots and long term lots getting searched as well?”

John McCaffery, TSA, said, “No, those vehicles that are in the garage, short term long term parking, even if they carry pretty large amounts of explosives, they would not cause damage to the front of the airport. But for those who use the valet, the car could be there for a half hour or an hour so there is a vulnerability.”

News10NBC went to the valet parking and one of the attendants showed us the notice they put in the cars.

We asked, “You’re required, they tell you, you have to search the car?” Valet Parking Attendant Frank Dettorre said, “I have to do it.”

We also noticed a large sign that alerts customers that their vehicle will be inspected. The sign is on the kiosk window. Iacuzza says it was not there when she dropped off her car. “I think the public should be aware of the fact that if their car is going to be searched, they should be informed of it.”

Iacuzza said she doesn’t mind the security measure. She just wants to be told if her car is getting searched.

News10NBC asked the owner of the company that runs the valet parking when they put up the sign but he wouldn’t answer.

TSA says this is part of its overall security plan and that it’s a proactive move. The attendants said they’ve only been doing it for about a month.

Detroit and the Bankruptcy of Liberalism

3085_1packard_4__detroit_2012_6134255

Detroit and the Bankruptcy of Liberalism
Rich Tucker
July 22, 2013 at 7:00 am

Detroit is a showcase for the liberal agenda — and now it is bankrupt. More than 50 years of control by big-government liberals and union bosses have left a once-great American city crippled and deteriorating.

Last week Detroit became the largest city in American history to declare bankruptcy. Few were surprised, as the city’s been struggling for years.

The unemployment rate in Detroit is 16 percent, more than twice the national average. The city’s government-run schools have failed, with just 7 percent of eighth graders proficient in reading. It takes police about an hour to respond to calls, and the city has more than $18 billion in unfunded liabilities. The city’s population has dropped by a quarter in just the last decade, as hundreds of thousands have voted with their feet and left.

It hasn’t always been this way, of course. For decades, the city of Detroit was a manufacturing powerhouse. The assembly line was perfected there, and brought with it the idea of a middle-class lifestyle based on manufacturing. Tanks and planes made in Detroit helped make the U.S. the arsenal of democracy. And after World War II the city boomed, producing cars that helped make the American dream achievable for millions. Motown Records produced music that defined a generation, with artists who remain household names such as Diana Ross and the Supremes, Marvin Gaye and the Jackson 5.

Reader asks Where are all of the Hispanic leaders on the Zimmerman case ?

Reorg3_theridgewoodblog.net_51

Reader asks Where are all of the Hispanic leaders on the Zimmerman case ?

Did Senator Bob Menendez say this ? Or was it Senator Mel Martinez (FL) ?

There are, frankly, very few Hispanic men who haven’t had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. That happens to me, at least before I was a senator. There are very few Hispanics who haven’t had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had a chance to get off. That happens often. And I don’t want to exaggerate this, but those sets of experiences inform how the Hispanic community interprets what happened one night in Florida. Once again, another hispanic was tragically the victim of a beat down. Difference is, this time the victim had a gun and was able to defend himself.

Where are all the hispanic leaders ?
