Bloomberg Says Interpretation of Constitution Will ‘Have to Change’ After Boston Bombing
By Jill Colvin 4/22 12:24pm

n the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday the country’s interpretation of the Constitution will “have to change” to allow for greater security to stave off future attacks.

“The people who are worried about privacy have a legitimate worry,” Mr. Bloomberg said during a press conference in Midtown. “But we live in a complex word where you’re going to have to have a level of security greater than you did back in the olden days, if you will. And our laws and our interpretation of the Constitution, I think, have to change.”

Mr. Bloomberg, who has come under fire for the N.Y.P.D.’s monitoring of Muslim communities and other aggressive tactics, said the rest of the country needs to learn from the attacks.

With Ricin Case Crumbling, FBI Targets New Man

Federal agents raid Mississippi home of former GOP candidate

4/23 UPDATE: A federal judge this afternoon formally dismissed criminal charges against Curtis. Magistrate S. Allan Alexander signed an order for dismissal after prosecutors petitioned to drop their case since “the ongoing investigation has revealed new information.”

APRIL 23–With federal prosecutors apparently poised to drop charges against the Mississippi man accused of sending ricin-tainted letters to President Barack Obama and two other public officials, FBI agents are searching the home of a former Republican candidate in connection with the dangerous mailings.

Paul Kevin Curtis, 45, was arrested last week for allegedly sending the threatening letters to Obama, U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, and a Mississippi county judge. But Curtis has been released from custody amid signs that the case against him has collapsed.

Rail commuters who regularly use bicycles to travel to and from the Ridgewood train station are at odds with municipal officials.

The Village Council next month will consider an ordinance allowing authorities to remove and seize bikes parked within public right of ways.

bikeatthePostOffice_theiridgewoodblog.net

The ordinance, introduced last week, is intended to define the appropriate means and locations for bicycle parking as a “matter of the health, safety, and welfare of the residents,” according to the language contained in the proposal. It is specifically aimed at bikes that are secured to fixed objects but cause impedance to vehicle and foot traffic.

Councilman Tom Riche opposed the adoption of the ordinance on first reading without comment, and Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh was absent.

Wyckoff man arrested on charges of lewdness at Ridgewood Library
Tuesday April 23, 2013, 12:39 PM
The Ridgewood News

A 19-year-old Wyckoff resident has been arrested on charges that he allegedly masturbated inside the Ridgewood Public Library earlier this month.

Ridgewood detectives said that village police conducted a thorough investigation and ultimately charged Matthew Widner with lewdness for the April 9 incident, which witnesses claim took place in the children’s section of the library.

According to Detective Chris McDowell, a library staff member called authorities at 8:17 p.m. on April 9, asserting to police that another employee observed a man touching himself inappropriately. The suspect already left the building at the time the call was placed, McDowell said, but library workers offered police information about the man’s identity.

Police questioned the man, later identified as Widner, that night, but he was released without any charges.

Detectives continued their investigation for several days leading up to last Thursday’s arrest.

Valley Sleep Medicine Specialist Urges: Don’t Ignore Signs of Sleep Apnea
By Jeffrey P. Barasch, M.D., FACCP, FAASM

The Center for Sleep Medicine

April 18 is Sleep Apnea Awareness Day

Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening breathing disorder that affects an estimated 20 million Americans, most of whom remain undiagnosed.

“Apnea” is a Greek word meaning “without breath.”  Those with sleep apnea have pauses in their breathing during sleep, caused by a temporary collapse of the airway.  Each episode of apnea, which can last from 10 seconds to over a minute, leads to reduced oxygen levels in the blood.  This can occur dozens to hundreds of times during each night of sleep, and can lead to disruptions in sleep and frequent fluctuations in heart rate and blood pressure.

Untreated sleep apnea can seriously impair health and is linked to strokes, high blood pressure and heart attacks, which are otherwise unexplained.  Additionally, sleep apnea can lead to arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, diabetes, and weight gain.  Untreated sleep apnea can also lead to impaired job performance and motor vehicle accidents, as well as more frequent medical complications following surgery or anesthesia.

More common in men than in women, sleep apnea is characterized by the following signs and symptoms:

• Loud snoring
• Periods of non-breathing during sleep, which may be accompanied by snorting or gasping sounds
• Restless sleep or repetitive arousals, often unnoticed, during sleep
• Feeling sleepy or falling asleep at inappropriate times during the day, such as while driving, working or reading.
• Depression, irritability and sexual dysfunction
• Memory loss.

If you suspect you may have sleep apnea, ask your doctor if you could benefit from a sleep evaluation.

East Coast Burger : A long overdue positive revue

East Coast Burger : A long overdue positive revue
April 23,2013

Ridgewood NJ, I tried East Coast Burger on their opening week and as the owners have readily admitted, it was a bit of a disaster.  I vowed never to go back.  Much has changed since I gave them a second chance.

They had a lot to sort out as most new businesses do…and sort it out they have.  My wife has since declared it the best burger she’s had – we’ve had so many that when I call in an order now they know who I am and finish the order for me!

The owners are great guys and always so welcoming and friendly (one of the guys even gave me a bag of frozen ghost chilis from his personal stash after discussing my love of super hot peppers).

That leads to the next point, these guys are a local business and they are running it. They are there all the time and care deeply about their product and their customers.  I wish ECB was everywhere because the burgers are incredible…not the greasy mess of five guys (although those are delicious too).  These guys are the type of people our town should support…homegrown family business – not the atrocities being proposed by village hall like mcdonalds, etc…gross.  Ridgewood needs more businesses like this.  We would be a better town for it.  I just wish I had the nerve (and the time) to try to build something like these two have.

Did Boston bomber murder his ‘only American friend’ in horrific triple killing in 2011?

Boston bomb suspect didn’t attend funeral despite them being best friends
Former associates at the gym where he trained now believe it is a clue

Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev may have murdered his ‘only American friend’ in an unsolved triple killing two years ago, it emerged today.

Brendan Mess had his ‘throat slit’ alongside two other men in a Massachusetts apartment in 2011 in what police described as a ‘very graphic crime scene’.

Former associates of the Chechan immigrant didn’t initially suspect him of carrying out the gruesome attack, but thought it was strange he didn’t attend his friend’s funeral.

Now one man who knew Tamerlan through the gym where they trained said some of their social circle ‘without even speaking about it beforehand have all been thinking’ he could be involved.

Internet Sales Tax Is a State Money Grab

taxes_onlin-100006770-gallery

Internet Sales Tax Is a State Money Grab
Amy Payne
April 22, 2013

Why are states so eager to collect taxes on Internet sales?

In short, because they could grab money from other states.

Heritage legal expert David Addington lays it out:

Like the money-hungry federal government, many state governments have financial and political interests in getting their hands on more and more money to grow their governments. It is not surprising that many of those state governments find out-of-state businesses to be lucrative and politically easy targets for tax legislation.

Addington explains how this would work. Take, for example, a company whose workforce and warehouses are in New Hampshire. This company has no contacts with Illinois other than taking remote sales orders over the Internet.

The Internet sales tax proposal would allow Illinois politicians to use the New Hampshire company as their tax collector. The New Hampshire company would have to collect Illinois sales tax on its remote sales to Illinois residents and send the taxes to the Illinois state government.

As The Wall Street Journal puts it, “Small online sellers will therefore have to comply with tax laws created by distant governments in which they have no representation, and in places where they consume no local services.”

Who’s hurt?

Consumers nationwide could be hit with higher prices.
Internet companies, which would be forced to collect taxes for thousands of jurisdictions.

Who’s helped?

State politicians, who find it politically easy to impose tax collection duties on out-of-state businesses that have no say on taxes or tax procedures in that state.
States collecting new tax revenue to grow their governments.

The Senate is likely voting today on this proposal. As Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) put it, “what this is about is officials in cash-strapped states across the country looking for new ways to plug their budget holes.”

And because Congress would be allowing states to grab from other states, Addington notes that “all the politicians get to hide from the consequences of their own tax decisions.”

The bottom line: “Less money in the pockets of people, more money for big government.”

Traffic solutions debated at Ridge School in Ridgewood

May’s Walk to School Month

Traffic solutions debated at Ridge School in Ridgewood
Monday April 22, 2013, 1:00 PM
BY  DARIUS AMOS
STAFF WRITER
The Ridgewood News

A new traffic pattern proposed for Ridge School has earned the support of several village officials and professionals, but parents and school safety representatives suggest the change will do more harm than good.

The Ridgewood Council will consider an ordinance next month that, if approved, will prohibit left turns from eastbound West Ridgewood Avenue into the Ridge School driveway. The ordinance would make the turn illegal during the peak student drop-off and pick-up hours, from 8 to 9 a.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on school days.

Parents have called for traffic changes because current conditions have become too dangerous for students and all motorists. In addition, many parents have complained about the number of traffic tickets issued by the Ridgewood Police Department.

Interview with Chryssoula Katsikoudi Director of International Relations and Middle Eastern Affairs at GSFC

The Ridgewood blog spoke with Chryssoula Katsikoudi Director of International Relations and Middle Eastern Affairs Geostrategic Forecasting Cooperation – (GSFC) to get her take on the Boston Bombers

TRB : We wanted to get you take on the Boston Bombers

Chryssoula , Yes, I have lot’s of thoughts on the Boston Bombers. First, the one thing that bothers me the most is this feeling I have that something is not right with this whole story. After careful research of the two suspects, I find it very, very hard to believe that someone like the younger Brother, who seemed so normal, grew up in the States, wasn’t really that religious, and after looking at his twitter account; that he would suddenly turn within the last two years into a terrorist, or some radical “jihadist.”

Chryssoula , I do believe that his brother brainwashed him, after his trip to Russia, and I am also highly convinced the Russians are somehow involved in this.

Chryssoula, After the attacks, I have done a lot of research on Chechens, their religion, and their resistance against Russia; Chechens are Sufi Muslims…Sufism is not necessarily associated with radical Islam, it is a more spiritual, and peaceful version of Islam…

Chryssoula , I also do not believe these attacks were religious related…some form of “jihad” like so many now say…furthermore, what I found really interesting, was that a couple days before the bombings occurred, the Boston Globe had reported on their Twitter account that Boston Police or officials were going to have the bomb squad out practicing and having detonations going on near the Library which was right at the finish line…

Chryssoula , I am not saying that the suspects are completely innocent, but until the younger one confesses or there is hard core evidence that he was the one who placed the bag with the explosives on the ground; I believe there is more to this story than we know. After all, we had NEVER had an incident were Chechens had any reason to attack the US JUST because they’re Muslim? Sounds a little off to me. Or maybe I’m just all into conspiracies 🙂

TRB : Were not the Chechen Rebels  the group that took over a Russian school under the guidance of al Quada ? Did not they follow the al- Quada play book? I do agree with you that the younger brother at lest not on face value appears not to fit any profile at all , but what was the influence of his older brother and it seems like they had NO parental guidance what so ever .

Chryssoula , Yes, you are right about the school take over, however, whether they were following the al-Qaida play book or not, has not been determined 100%, it was assumed that they were. Chechens after the Russian resistance had found their faith in Islam again after many centuries, and have turned back to their religious roots.

Chryssoula , But, like I said, they are Sufi Muslims…I don’t see Sufi Muslims be radical towards the US, at least not in the last three decades. Therefore, I do believe they have been brainwashed, at least the older brother, when he visited Russian a year before that.

Chryssoula , Chechens don’t have any beef with the US, at least not on religious grounds. I could see them doing an incident like this in Russia…but I don’t know..I don’t see a motive.

Saudi National Questioned in Boston Attack was on Terror Watch List

Saudi National Questioned in Boston Attack was on Terror Watch List
Todd Starnes

The Saudi national who was initially detained and then ruled out as a suspect in the Boston Marathon terrorist attack had been flagged on a terror watch list and was granted a student visa without being properly vetted, sources have told me.

A source close to the investigation revealed that the Saudi national had been deemed inadmissible under the section of the Immigration and Nationality Act which declares ineligible for a visa – any alien who is engaged in or is likely to engage after entry – in terrorist activity.

At least two additional sources have confirmed to me that the Saudi national is set to be deported as early as this week, contrary to statements made by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

The House Homeland Security Committee is now requesting a classified briefing with Napolitano to get to the bottom of the issue, according to an exclusive report from The Blaze.

Napolitano denied anyone was being deported in a heated exchange Thursday with Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) during a House hearing.

Ira Einhorn, Earth Day’s Dirty Secret

Ira Einhorn, Earth Day’s Dirty Secret
By Ken Anderson Apr 22, 2006  Magic City Morning Star

On this, the 36th anniversary of Earth Day, it is only fitting to speak of one of its founders, Ira Einhorn.

You won’t find Ira Einhorn’s name listed in any of the Earth Day promotional literature, as the organizers have taken great pains to distance themselves from this man, at least since he became better known for composting his girlfriend in a trunk in his closet for a couple of years in the late 1970s.

Earth Day organizers and publicists don’t want to have anything to do with Ira these days. Since he was convicted of murder, he hasn’t been very useful to them. But that wasn’t always the case. In 1970, during the first Earth Day event, which was televised throughout the globe, Ira Einhorn was on stage as master of ceremonies.

Or so he claims, and it seems likely that he was.

A friend and contemporary of Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, and acquaintance of authors Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsburg, Timothy Leary, Alvin Toffler, and Isaac Asimov, Einhorn held the floor for a half hour, during the first Earth Day celebration, in Philadelphia, kissing Edmund Muskie on the lips before surrendering the microphone to the Senator from Maine. There is no evidence that Muskie rejected his advances, or that anyone associated with the event had ever voiced any disagreement with Einhorn’s place as a key organizer until after his arrest for the murder of Holly Maddux.
