MAHWAH, NJ — A harrowing midnight crash on a major Bergen County highway left local authorities stunned after a vehicle literally went airborne, slamming directly into the second story of a commercial structure.

The incident unfolded just after midnight on June 28, along the northbound lanes of Route 17. According to the Mahwah Police Department, Sergeant Martin Kilroy was actively patrolling the highway when he witnessed a vehicle lose control near the West Ramapo Avenue off-ramp.

What happened next reads like a movie stunt.

An Airborne Highway Disaster

“The vehicle veered off of the highway and catapulted through the air,” a Mahwah police spokesperson stated.

Defying gravity, the car flew completely off the roadway alignment and struck the second floor of a building situated on West Ramapo Avenue.

Sgt. Kilroy rushed immediately to the impact site. Upon arrival, he discovered that both the driver and his passenger had already managed to climb out of the heavily damaged vehicle. Fortunately, the building struck by the flying car was actively under construction and completely unoccupied at the time of the crash, preventing potential injuries on the ground.

Miraculous Lack of Severe Injuries

Mahwah EMS personnel quickly arrived at the scene to evaluate the occupants. Incredibly, both the driver and his passenger initially reported no injuries despite the violent nature of the airborne collision.

  • The Passenger: A 17-year-old boy was evaluated at the scene and later taken to a local hospital by his parents for a precautionary medical examination.

  • The Driver: The male teenage driver was taken into custody by responding officers.

DWI Charges and Ongoing Investigation

The driver has been officially charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). In addition to the drunk driving charge, he was served with several minor motor vehicle summonses before being released into the custody of a legal guardian.

Mahwah police officials noted on Thursday that the spectacular crash remains under active investigation, and additional criminal or traffic charges may be filed in the future as investigators conclude their report.

  1. Mahwah ~ Bergen County’s playground…,

  2. Good thing Mahwah doesn’t try to build baseball fields and children’s playgrounds off of Route 17.

  3. “Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin”. Time to film a new Smokey and the Bandit.
