WYCKOFF, NJ — Mother Nature dealt a violent blow to Bergen County over the weekend, leaving behind a trail of property damage and a terrifying highway accident that sent two people to the hospital.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening around 8:00 p.m. as severe, fast-moving thunderstorms rolled through the region. According to Wyckoff Police Lieutenant Joseph Soto, two commuters were traveling southbound on Route 208 in a Toyota Highlander when a large tree suddenly uprooted and collapsed directly onto the moving traffic.
A Near-Miss Turning Into a Highway Emergency
The falling tree landed squarely on the hood and windshield of the Highlander, shattering the glass and trapping the occupants inside during the height of the storm.
First responders rushed to the scene on the southbound highway to render emergency aid:
-
Front Seat Passenger: A 39-year-old woman from Passaic, NJ, suffered multiple lacerations to her legs caused by the exploding windshield glass. She was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital by the Wyckoff Ambulance Corps.
-
Rear Seat Passenger: A second occupant riding in the back seat was also transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation following the impact.
Thankfully, Wyckoff authorities confirmed that none of the injuries sustained in the crash appear to be life-threatening.
Widespread Storm Damage Across Bergen County
While Route 208 bore the brunt of this specific highway emergency, the severe weekend weather left its mark across the entirety of Bergen County. High winds and heavy downpours downed power lines and sent massive shade trees crashing into local roadways and residential properties in surrounding towns, including nearby Paramus.
Lt. Soto noted that despite the harrowing nature of the Route 208 accident, no other major storm-related injuries were reported within Wyckoff proper. Local DPW and emergency crews worked efficiently through the night to clear the highway lanes and restore safe driving conditions.
As volatile weather patterns continue, local police remind drivers to exercise extreme caution, reduce speeds, and, if possible, pull over safely during periods of torrential downpours and high winds.
