Menendez trial brings high stakes for N.J. and Democratic fight against Trump

WASHINGTON — The stakes for Sen. Bob Menendez’s corruption case have grown to national proportions.

More than two years since the Democrat was charged with allegedly trading influence for lavish gifts, his trial begins Tuesday in Newark, N.J. — with major implications for both a four-decade fixture in Garden State politics and the Democratic fight against President Trump’s agenda.

Menendez has vowed he will be vindicated at trial.

But if he is convicted and forced from office, the result could tilt Washington’s political balance by allowing Republicans to claim one more Senate seat as they push to rewrite the tax code and perhaps make another run at health care reform. That’s because Gov. Christie, in his final weeks in office, would have a chance to appoint Menendez’s replacement — almost certainly filling the reliably blue seat with a fellow Republican, at least temporarily.

The significance of that potential shift was illustrated in July, when the GOP’s health-care overhaul was blocked by a single vote.

“It potentially has enormous implications for the entire legislative agenda,” said Phil Kerpen, the head of the conservative lobbying group American Commitment.

N.J. continues summer growth in employment

Ridgewood Graydon Pool lifeguard

By Eric Strauss, August 18, 2017 at 1:25 PM

New Jersey’s private-sector employment grew by nearly 10,000 jobs in July, following a revised gain of nearly 15,000 jobs in June, the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development reported recently.

The report, based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, found that total nonfarm wage and salary employment rose by 9,800 positions in July, while the June number was revised to 14,900 jobs gained, up from 10,600 estimated earlier.

“The economy and the recovery seem to have gained a bit of momentum after years of frustratingly slow growth,” Mark Vitner, senior economist at Wells Fargo, told NJBIZ. “It does seem that things have picked up, and we’ve had two months of strong job gains.”

Of those July jobs, 7,300 were added in the private sector, with the rest added in public positions. The state said private-sector employment is at a historic high.

Just which American Citizens will be the targeted ones to pay the reparations?

RE: Pro Cop Killer Joanne Chesimard Group Pays a Visit to Ridgewood

I am curious, Just which American Citizens will be the targeted ones to pay the reparations? Everone? Including them? Just those in the Southern States who did the enslavement? Just the ones the POP decides are the enslavers?  As a family member of emancipated Afro-Americans in Ridgewood pre-Civil War and a grand-father of Afro-American grandchildren, and vocal advocate in the face of the sitting governing bodies in New Jersey to save the Zabriskie Tenant House which was razed to the ground effectively erasing the history of our part of American that fought to preserve the dignity and equal status of our brothers and sisters from Africa. I am just wondering who is it they are singling out? Dear POP seen you coming for 60 years and Martin Luther King, Macolm X, and ALL the Black Panthers got my back….who got yours?

Sincerely, Peter Zabriskie

Exclusive: Murphy Plans to Raise $1.3 Billion in Taxes

Phill Murphy -Sara Medina del Castillo

Tax hikes for millionaires, hedge fund managers, large corporations and pot smokers anchor Democrat’s plan.

Phil Murphy’s proposed tax increases would raise roughly $1.3 billion a year, his spokesman told Observer on Thursday, releasing for the first time a cost estimate of the Democratic gubernatorial nominee’s plans to pay for a multitude of campaign promises.

A separate $80 million to $100 million would be generated through savings from reining in out-of-network health care costs for public workers covered by state plans, the spokesman said, for a total annual gain of $1.4 billion in revenue.

N.J. lottery-pension plan “slightly positive,” Wall Street ratings agency says

Lottery_theridgewoodblog

Dustin Racioppi, State House Bureau, @dracioppiPublished 3:29 p.m. ET Aug. 15, 2017 | Updated 5:32 p.m. ET Aug. 15, 2017

Gov. Chris Christie’s new law shifting lottery revenue from education and social-service programs to the troubled public employee pension funds is being viewed as a “slightly positive” move by a Wall Street ratings agency, but not one that will fully relieve the pressure on the state to meet its obligations to workers.

The report by Moody’s Investors Service is the latest analysis by one of the three major ratings agencies that have collectively downgraded New Jersey’s credit under Christie a record 11 times. They often cited the state’s heavily underfunded pension system as the main driver of the downgrades.

Reader says time for Cory Booker to Go

cory_booker_theridgewoodblog

When is Cory Booker going to be taken down? He wants to be known as the former Mayor of Newark, but he really is from the silver spoon community of Harrington Park. He claims to have lived on Hawthorne Avenue in Newark during his tenure in office, but I would be he couldn’t find it on a map. Much less have the intestinal fortitude to get out of the chauffeur driven limousine to enter the home on a regular basis. Pay interns? Surely you gest. Chuck Schumer doesn’t let any cash flow from his nicotine stained fingers.

Rat-borne disease now killing dogs in New Jersey

Vicious_dog_theridgewoodblog

file photo by William Thomas

PARAMUS, N.J. — Health officials in New Jersey are warning pet owners about a deadly disease that is passed through rats.

Veterinarians in the state say they have seen a rise in the number of dogs who have contracted leptospirosis this year. The disease — known in some parts of the world as mud fever or swamp fever — is a bacterial infection that is transmitted through rat urine. Health officials say dogs may be exposed to the infection after lapping up puddle water.

CBS New York reports that at least three dogs died and two others were sickened by the disease in northern New Jersey.

The Blue Pearl Veterinary Hospital in Paramus has recently treated five dogs; three of them died. It was too late for antibiotics and the animals suffered organ failure, WCBS 880 reported.

The infection can also be hazardous for humans if they come into contact with rat urine. A Bronx man died from leptospirosis in February and two others became ill. But the New Jersey Health Department says there are currently no known human cases of leptospirosis in the state.
