YouTube Grows While Facebook Stagnates

Ridgewood NJ, YouTube and Facebook are the most dominant social media platforms in the US. YouTube’s user base grew from 73 percent of adults in 2019 to 81 percent in 2021. Facebook’s share of users remained at 69 percent over the same period. The only other platform to see statistically significant growth since 2019 was Reddit. While growth has slowed down, users still report using social media frequently throughout the day.

Signal in the UK is testing a payment feature that lets you send cryptocurrency to friends

Ridgewood NJ, Signal is testing a new peer-to-peer payment system in the UK called Signal Payments. The system uses MobileCoin, a cryptocurrency with a close relationship with Signal co-founder and CEO Moxie Marlinspike. Signal will not have access to users’ balances, full transaction histories, or funds. Users will have full control over their funds. A link to the Signal beta sign-up page is available for those who are interested in testing the feature.

Personal Data from 533 Million Facebook Accounts Including Phone Numbers, Email Addresses Leaked

Ridgewood NJ, Personal data from 533 million Facebook accounts was recently leaked online. The dataset was scraped by exploiting a vulnerability that was fixed in 2019. It contains information such as phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, birth dates, email addresses, and more. Portions of the dataset were available for purchase earlier this year through a Telegram bot. The leaked emails have been uploaded to Have I Been Pwned, but the owner of the site is still debating whether to make the leaked phone numbers available.

Ridgewood NJ, Virgin Galactic unveiled the VSS Imagine on Tuesday, the first of its next-generation SpaceShip III class of vehicles. It is the third spacecraft the company has built to date. The VSS Imagine was designed with lessons taken from flight testing on VSS Unity in mind. SpaceShip III class spacecraft can be manufactured faster and take less time to maintain between each flight compared to SpaceShipTwo class spacecraft due to their modular design. Virgin Galactic is on track for a test flight in May, after a delay in December.

Energy-mining Card Treats 5G networks as Wireless Power Grids

Ridgewood NJ, A team from Georgia Tech has unveiled a 3D-printed rectifying antenna that can harvest electromagnetic energy from 5G signals and use it to power devices. The playing card-sized device could turn 5G networks into wireless power grids. It is flexible and works well even when bent. Millimeter-wave energy harvesting has been possible for some time, but it hasn’t been practical due to the large size of previous antennas. The device can harvest more than enough energy to power a range of small sensors and devices by using energy that would otherwise have been wasted.

Columbia University Researchers Successfully Store ‘Data’ Inside DNA of Living Bacteria

New York NY, A team led by Columbia University ’s Harris Wang has been working on doing just this for the last couple of years. Most recently, the team managed to electrically encode 72 bits of data to write the string of letters “Hello world!” into a population of bacterial cells.

UK to Build World’s First Airport For Flying Cars And Drones

Unique Bacterial Inhabitants Discovered on the International Space Station

Ridgewood NJ, according to a study published  in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology. The International Space Station has become the host for unique bacterial inhabitants. And these microbes could prove useful.

Four strains of bacteria, three of which were previously unknown to science, have been found on the space station. They may be used to help grow plants during long-term spaceflight missions in the future.

Cloud-seeding technology is already used in the country, but the UAE wants to generate more rain. The country only averages 100mm of rain per year. In 2017, the government provided $15m (£10.8m) for nine different rain-enhancement projects.

FBI Reports Huge Increase of over 300,000 More Cyber Crime Complaints in 2020 than 2019

Ridgewood NJ, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center has released its annual report. The 2020 Internet Crime Report includes information from 791,790 complaints of suspected internet crime—an increase of more than 300,000 complaints from 2019—and reported losses exceeding $4.2 billion. State-specific statistics have also been released and can be found within the 2020 Internet Crime Report and in the accompanying 2020 State Reports.
