Car hits fire hydrant triggering water main break & gas leak in Ridgewood

Ridgewood NJ, The immediate area surrounding Spring and Van Dien Avenues in Ridgewood was flooded with water on Monday morning (10/06 @ 0945 hours) following an accident in which a HoHoKus driver struck a fire hydrant with his SUV. Ridgewood PD, FD, and EMS units all responded to the scene. The driver was uninjured, but his vehicle was towed from the scene by a flatbed tow truck. The broken hydrant triggered a major water main break; personnel from Ridgewood Water and Ridgewood firefighters struggled with a shutoff valve for more than an hour to bring the leak under control. Representatives from PSE&G were called to the scene when firefighters detected a strong smell of natural gas in the area. Four (4) nearby homes were temporarily evacuated while emergency crews checked for any signs of accumulated gas. The intersection of Spring and Van Dien Avenues will remain closed indefinitely while crews repair the leak(s).

Downtown Tree Well Report 9.22.14 – Volunteers Welcome
9/22/14 Update; Oak, Chestnut and Broad still need to be weeded and mulched, but I need to work on labeling and identifying the trees before they lose their leaves. Tomorrow I am going to work on labeling wells and identifying trees. I am going to start on Maple and work my way up Ridgewood and down. I will initially label the wells in a inconspicuous place with a permanent marker. Once I have all trees counted I will investigate a more obvious and tasteful labeling method. I will have sheets to fill out for each tree and my plan is to take a picture of each tree that will help identify the species and condition. I would appreciate any and all help. This should be cleaner (and quicker) than weeding and mulching.

Grease spill cleanup continues near Ridgewood Sewer Treatment Plant

Ridgewood NJ, Employees from the Village of Ridgewood’s Water Pollution Control Facility at 561 Prospect Street, Glen Rock cleaning up remnants of a grease spill that entered a tributary of the HoHoKus Brook on Friday afternoon, 09/05/2014.
Approximately 200 gallons of gases, oils, and watery fats spilled when a truck transfer line burst earlier in the week. Some of the material escaped efforts to contain it, and drained into streams that feed the nearby Brook.

RIdgewood police, fire, and EMS personnel all responded to a multi-vehicle chain reaction crash in the left lane of Route 17 southbound, just south of Paramus Road at approximately 5:30 PM on Tuesday, 08/05. The driver of a red 4-door Mercedes was transported to The Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries resultant from air bag deployment in his vehicle. Two vehicles involved in the crash were heavily damaged and had to be removed from the scene by flatbed tow truck. A Bergen County Sheriff’s Office unit assisted with traffic control at the scene. As a result of crash there were very heavy traffic delays on Route 17 south extending back to at least Hollywood Avenue in HoHoKus. There were no rubbernecking delays northbound.

Procession for Fallen Waldwick Police officer

Ridgewood N, The Waldwick Police Department would like to thank all of our residents, neighbors and friends for their support during this difficult time. The outpouring of that support has been incredibly comforting to Officer Goodell’s family and his police department family.
On Monday July 21, 2014 at 1pm, there will be a procession to bring Officer Goodell to St. Luke’s Church on Franklin Tpke in HoHoKus. The procession will enter Waldwick from Wyckoff, via Wyckoff Avenue. It will continue on Wyckoff Avenue to Hopper Avenue and turn left; continue to Franklin Turnpike in Allendale and make a right; continue to Grove Street and make a left turn; right turn onto Centre Street and a right turn onto E.Prospect Street. The procession will stop for a brief pause in front of the Public Safety Building, before making a left turn onto Franklin Turnpike and continuing to St. Luke’s Church. Visitation will begin at approximately 2pm. It is recommended that anyone wishing to view the procession should assemble in front of Waldwick High School or in the area of the Public Safety Building.
Over the past several days, we have been preparing for Officer Goodell’s services with the assistance of countless local and county agencies. The wake will be from 2pm to 9pm on Monday and the Funeral Mass will be at 11am on Tuesday, both at St. Luke’s Church in HoHoKus. It is anticipated that several thousand people will be paying their respects to Officer Goodell on Monday and Tuesday. That being said, traffic and parking are going to be issues that we all need to contend with. There will be traffic delays and periodic road closures. We have arranged for Bergen Community College to be the main parking area for anyone wishing to attend the services. Buses will be available to transport people to and from St. Luke’s Church. We have made special parking and transportation accommodations for Waldwick residents only. In order to ease our transportation concerns, we are asking that everyone adhere to the plans that we have prepared.

Reports from around Ridgewood –
Ridgewood NJ, The HoHoKus Brook has overflowed into the Graydon South parking lot, Vets Field, the RHS Athletic Field, and is beginning to encroach on the parking lot at the rear of Village Hall & the Ridgewood Public Library.
Several reports were received by Ridgewood PD that lawn chairs were seen floating down East Ridgewood Avenue into the intersection at Maple. Similar reports were received about chairs in the middle of the intersection of Franklin and North Maple Avenues.
Trees down on Corona Place, several motor vehicles were damaged.
Reports of tree limbs down on Waverley Place and Norman Drive.
No reports received yet about conditions along the Saddle River.

Ridgewood PD responds to report of stranded snapping turtle

It was decided to leave the turtle in place and check back in several days to determine whether it freed itself on its own. The Tyco representative believes the turtle laid eggs somewhere in the Park and is now in the process of heading back to her usual habitat.
Readers respond to Councilwomen Gwen Hauck’s Ridiculous Ridgewood Library Comment

Really.
So you want the library budget in the same echelon as a 24/7 365 days a year department budget to include state and federal mandated training and equipment.
The library also benefits from private funding through the Friends of the Library organization and the Library Foundation, Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck said. But, according to Hauck, the library should be shouldered by the village.
“It is an expensive department, but it’s not near as expensive as the police department and fire department. I would like it to be up there in that same echelon,” Hauck said.
Duh? Are you friggin’ kidding me? Earth calling Gwenn, Earth calling Gwenn, come in please Gwenn! Police and fire operate 24/7/365 with specialized equipment and personnel. Including state and federal mandated training ?
Funny isn’t it. Loads of talk from Village Hall about shared services and using the County services when possible but no talk at all about combining municipal libraries and getting rid of some administrative overhead in the process. We could easily combine with HoHoKus, Midland Park, and Glen Rock, could we not?
Noble as libraries have been over the years, it’s hard to justify increasing public funding for Ridgewood’s. Such is the price we pay for past extravagances. As for Mrs. Hauck, she should probably keep her head down and steer clear of any other potential conflicts of interest at the taxpayers’ expense. In advance of the predictable counterpoint – I’ll concede that her advocating for another of her personal crusades is “legal” but it just continues to look bad.

Ridgewood NJ, Selected pictures from yesterdays Veterans Day Ceremonies at Veterans Field in Ridgewood.
The focus of this year’s ceremony was the Korean War. The Master of Ceremonies was Bob Paoli, Commander of American Legion Post 53; The National Anthem was sung by the Harmony Celebration Chorus; Reverand Kyu Tae Pak, Midland Park United Methodist Church opened the ceremonies with a prayer; Ridgewood Mayor Paul Aronsohn made opening remarks; Sgt. 1st Class Ron Zier spoke about the Korean War and his service there; Retired HoHoKus Police Chief Robert Re spoke about the war and his service in Korea at that time; veterans in the audience were honored for their military service, and Sally Ann Tumas-Skoric sang “God Bless America” with the audience joining in. Many students from Benjamin Franklin Middle School and Ridgewood High School were in the audience.

Ridgewood facing DEP fine over discharges into Hohokus Brook

RIDGEWOOD — The state Department of Environmental Protection wants to fine the village $25,000 for polluting Hohokus Brook for years.
Village Engineer Chris Rutishauser told the council last week that a DEP inspector found violations back in May. Muddy water from Graydon Pool, Rutishauser said, was discharged into the brook — something he said the village has done for years.
Rutishauser said the village not only faced a fine, but also orders to immediately connect all of the pool’s discharge pipes into the village’s sanitary sewer system.
The DEP said that the village’s aquatic permit “doesn’t permit discharges to the brook,” Rutishauser said. “The brook is trout-stocked, and so the state is taking a strict view on any discharge entering that body of water.”

Family Day – GREAT RIDGEWOOD DUCK DERBY – THIS SUNDAY – JULY 14
THE GREAT RIDGEWOOD DUCK DERBY
Join us for a special family day on Sunday, July 14th (raindate 7/21) as we join the “Come Alive Outside” national initiative. Co-sponsors include Jacobsen Landscape Design and Construction and Whole Foods.
The fun will begin at 3:30 and last all afternoon at Graydon Pool and surrounding parklands. The day will offer a barbeque, musical entertainment, beach games, a sand sculpture contest and Duck-or-ation station, all culminating with a rubber duck race in the HoHoKus Brook.
The cost is $5 per person which includes a barbeque ticket and one rubber duck.
