RIDGEWOOD, N.J., Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05) hosted young legislators from 35 New Jersey high schools in Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren counties at the third annual Model Congress Saturday in Ridgewood.

This years turnout was significantly larger than last year . Students were well informed and thoroughly debated the issues .There were clearly some future statesmen and women in the room .

The Model Congress is an educational event for students where they will replicate a day in the life of a Congressperson in the U.S. House of Representatives. It gave an opportunity for naive idealism to met reality of negotiation and compromise. The Congressmen’s very able staff helped organized and run the event.

The Model Congress gives students a first-hand opportunity to learn how Congress works by allowing them to research legislation currently being considered in the U.S. House of Representatives, break into committees to further examine and debate the legislation, and finally bring the legislation to the House floor for a vote.

Students were assigned to represent different states, but not specific political parties. They stated their day by picking committee chairs and amending and voting on bills . Local boy scouts were brought in keep time and enforce time limits .

This is a nonpartisan event. Each school in New Jersey’s Fifth District sent two students for the Model Congress, and awards will be given for best debater, best consensus builder, best speaker, best research, best counterargument, and leadership at the end of the event. The congressmen made his usual low keyed entrance and keep the focus on the students ,letting his staff run the show .

Reader says it’s not “educating ” it’s holding Ridgewood students responsible for their behavior

RHS_Girls_Lacross_therigdewoodblog

“At RHS, we will continue to have educational discussions with our students about the effects of drugs and alcohol; assist in the emotional, psychological, and physical development of our teenagers; and teach about character and decision-making through academics, athletics, and the arts.”  Dr. Thomas Gorman
.
As usual, missing the mark.
.
This has less (nothing?) to do with “educating” the students in proper behavior (they know right from wrong) and more to do with holding the students (children) responsible for their actions. From a very young age, poor parenting and a home and school environment that puts more emphasis on making children feel good about themselves and blaming others for their poor behavior, rather than having the children face consequences for their actions, is the cause..
.
no amount of “reeducation” is going to change this behavior – but why start addressing the problem now when ignoring it has felt so good for so long.

Municipal Alliance and Ridgewood Public Schools Present Straight Shots – Substance Use and Social Norms

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Monday, May 23 7 – 9 pm, RHS Campus Center Presenter:

Ridgewood NJ, Dr. Tim Silvestri In conjunction with the Municipal Alliance of Ridgewood, the Ridgewood Public Schools will present a parent forum on underage drinking.

The Straight Shots program, featuring Dr. Tim Silvestri, Professor of Social Science at Lafayette University and licensed psychologist, will be held on Monday, May 23 from 7-9 p.m. in the Ridgewood High School Campus Center, 627 East Ridgewood Avenue.

The program is free and open to the adult public. Dr. Silvestri will inform middle school and high school parents and guardians about national social norms regarding underage drinking and drug use. He will provide detailed information on the biomechanics of alcohol and drug consumption on the teenage brain and present the multiple realities facing students, including social (mis)perception and positive expectations for substance use. A unique aspect of the program is a visual journey through the brain, from first drink to death, with a primary emphasis on skill building throughout. Research shows that parents can significantly influence their children’s decision-making about alcohol and drug use. Discussions with children about the dangers and risks of substance use can help to reduce underage drinking by up to thirty percent. Additionally, approximately seventyfive percent of all children turn to their parents for guidance on substance-use issues. It is essential to talk openly and honestly with children about alcohol and drug use. This program will provide parents with information that will promote these necessary conversations. Dr. Silvestri has two decades of experience educating business professionals, academic administrators, faculty, parents and students. His humorous and engaging style has been at the heart of his positive feedback from program attendees. His presentations carry the rigor of science with the accessibility of a casual conversation.
Municipal Alliance programs are funded through the Governor’s Counsel on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (GCADA) with money collected from fines on those convicted of drug-related offenses. Ridgewood’s Municipal Alliance coordinates the Safe Homes Parent Network and participates in the Parents who Host Lose the Most campaign.

Ridgewood High School was again not portrayed in the best light in the stands or parking lot during the lacrosse tournament

Ridgewood LAX association

May 12, 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We are excited that our girls and boys lacrosse teams both won the Bergen County final round of competition at Mahwah High School on May 7. It was great to see so many people from our community support our teams during the games. We are extremely proud of our coaches and players.

Unfortunately, despite previous warnings and pleas for assistance in my November 30 and December 11 letters regarding the conduct of our fans at the MetLife Stadium football championship game, Ridgewood High School was again not portrayed in the best light in the stands or parking lot during the lacrosse tournament. Administrators from Mahwah High School have notified us that the parking lot parent tailgate in the Ridgewood section was left in a very poor state with trash and alcohol bottles strewn about. In addition, we had one Ridgewood adult fan verbally accost the referees after the game, which required police intervention.

Sadly, the incidents referenced above are not unique to this one weekend. Many of these negative behaviors are illegal, disruptive, and dangerous. Please note that the consumption of alcohol on school grounds, whether at RHS or another school, is illegal and will result in a summons. It can also place students and athletes attending the tailgates in potential jeopardy of accusations by others, resulting in an investigation of the incident. In addition, this type of behavior may result in the County and State athletic associations not allowing Ridgewood to host future events.

At RHS, we will continue to have educational discussions with our students about the effects of drugs and alcohol; assist in the emotional, psychological, and physical development of our teenagers; and teach about character and decision-making through academics, athletics, and the arts.

We ask for your help in being role models for our students and set the correct tone and image we want portrayed of the RHS community.

Respectfully,

Thomas A. Gorman, Ed.D.
Principal

Ridgewood HS Jazz Bands to Present ‘Jazz in the Wood’

Ridgewood HS Jazz Bands to Present ‘Jazz in the Wood’

May 10,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. ,On Friday, May 13, Ridgewood High School’s award winning jazz ensembles will present an evening of big band jazz at their annual “Jazz in the Wood” dinner-concert to be held at the Woman’s Club of Ridgewood. The bands will be joined by special guest artist Mark Friedman, a renowned jazz saxophonist and Wyckoff resident, and longtime friend to the Ridgewood Music Program. Friedman will be the featured soloist with the RHS Big Band and Jazz Lab, playing music ranging from swing to bebop and Latin to funk. This gala event marks the culmination of Friedman’s three-month collaboration with the RHS jazz bands.

The dinner portion of the program will feature a three-course meal catered by Dawn’s Catering of Ridgewood, and will include a menu of salad, pasta, chicken and dessert with gluten-free and vegetarian options available. For children 12 and under, a kid’s menu option includes chicken tenders, and fries.

Having taught private lessons to flute, clarinet and saxophone students in the area for more than three decades, Mark Friedman has gained a reputation as one of the premier teachers in Bergen County. His students have been accepted to the most prestigious conservatories and universities in the country and are regularly selected to perform in honors ensembles at the County, Region, All-State and All-Eastern levels.

Mr. Friedman received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education and Jazz Performance from Jersey City State College (now New Jersey City University.) His teachers include Dick Volkart, Walt Levinsky, Dr. Richard Scott, Dan Trimbole, Dr. Alvin Fossner, Emile DeCosmo, and the great jazz legend, Phil Woods, whom he considered his mentor.

Mr. Friedman has toured, performed, and recorded with such great artists as Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Tito Puente, the Big Three Palladium Orchestra, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gillespie, Manhattan Transfer, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Four Tops, the Temptations, Frankie Valle, Andy Williams, Wayne Newton, the Dalton Gang and numerous others, including a Grammy Award© winning record with Machito.

Mr. Friedman is the director of the Indian Hills High School Band, and is on the music faculty at Ramapo High School.

The RHS Big Band and Jazz Lab are directed by Gary Fink and Jeffrey Haas, respectively, and feature many talented student musicians, including six who recently performed with the New Jersey Region I Jazz Ensembles. The bands will present songs in a variety of styles, including swing, bebop, New Orleans, Latin, rock and funk. Well known songs such as Earl Hagan’s Harlem Nocturne, Duke Ellington’s Perdido, Sonny Rollins’ St. Thomas, Joe Zawinul’s Birdland, and Phil Woods’ Randi will all be performed, and will feature Friedman along with several RHS soloists.

Dating back to the mid-20th century when such legendary jazz artists as Nelson Riddle, Sonny Igoe, and Red Mitchell could be heard in the music rooms, Ridgewood High School has enjoyed a long and distinguished history of excellence in jazz performance. With two big bands, a vocal jazz ensemble and various combos, the jazz program at RHS introduces students to music of different styles within the jazz genre. The Big Band and Jazz Lab have both been recognized with awards for excellent or superior performance at the NJAJE state jazz ensemble festivals, and have performed at venues around the country including Ryles Jazz Club in Cambridge, MA, Steamers Jazz Club and Café in Fullerton, CA, Bohemian Caverns in Washington, DC, the Town Centre in Virginia Beach, VA and Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, CA. Guest artists who have worked or performed with the jazz program include: Darmon Meader, Byron Stripling, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, Jeff Jarvis, Marvin Stamm, Ingrid Jensen, Dave Bargeron, Dave Stryker, Don Braden, Tom “Bones” Malone, Michael Philip Mossman, Andy Martin and many others.

The Public Shows Little Interest in Ridgewood Teachers Contract Talks

REA Members come out to greet our Board of Ed

May 3,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Despite lingering contract talks the public does not seem to be engaged in the Board Of Ed contract dispute with the teachers union, the REA.  Since so many things in Ridgewood seem dependent on the quality of education of the Ridgewood public schools ,the public’s lack of interest is to say the least surprising. In the past education issues have loomed large on the blog ,this time not so much.

“shouldn’t our schools and our teachers, one of THE biggest selling points of this town, be a top priority? that one sign says it all…’no contract = no future for ridgewood’. not feeling optimistic about any of it frankly”. Marata Maas (it takes a village Facebook page)

“May 10th is very, very important to Ridgewood, thus these topics are all particularly hot items right now. Voter turnout is always very low, so every vote becomes very important. Next, consider the environment that half of the students who will ultimately populate our high school will be subjected to if we dont get the right solution to the Valley Hospital expansion. Perhaps you are unaware of the other near misses Benjamin Franklin Middle School had with Valley which were resolved in the students’ best interests because of resident involvement. The high density housing issue could crowd up the schools and place an even heavier burden on taxpayers. And the safety and aesthetics of our downtown are certainly an important part of our village. And last, but certainly not least, we can directly influence the destiny of these issues with our votes on May 10th. We do not have that power in the case of the teachers’ contracts.” Laurie Bender (it takes a village Facebook page)

The Village is faced with what many perceive rightly or wrongly as even bigger issues that could potentially harm the quality of life and the quality of education in the Village of Ridgewood . So it looks like until May 10 the focus will be else where.
