College Board overhaul of SAT makes essay optional, returns to scale of 1,600

THE RECORD

The College Board announced on Wednesday that it was overhauling the SAT to make the college admissions test more focused, useful and geared toward what students really need to know to thrive in college.

To debut in spring 2016, the new version will include more “relevant” vocabulary, return to the 1,600-point scale, from 2,400, and make the major essay portion optional. Writing sections will no longer ask students to opine based on their own experiences but will prod them to analyze texts and cite evidence in their arguments.

The announcement inspired an outpouring of questions, concerns and, in some cases, relief about an anxiety-laden test that has long sparked dread among students and complaints from critics who say it gives an unfair advantage to those who can afford expensive test prep instruction. Many also argue that the SAT is a weak predictor of long-term success.

Obamacare Architect: ‘You Don’t Need a Doctor for Every Part of Your Health Care’

(CNSNews.com) – Under the Affordable Care Act, the Health and Human Services Department is spending billions of dollars to expand community health clinics, which are mainly staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

“It’s going to be one part of a complex part of the health care system,” Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, one of the architects of Obamacare, told Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly Tuesday night. “So if your kid has a sore throat and you want to find out if it’s strep throat, or your kid has what appears to be an ear infection and you want to find out if it’s otitis media — you really don’t need to go to the pediatrician. You can go to these clinics.”

New NJ Transit chief may be looking to shake up agency’s leadership

THE RECORD

Just days into her new job, NJ Transit’s new executive director may be shaking up the agency’s leadership, even while inviting rank-and-file employees to share their ideas for making the troubled organization work better.

“There are no ‘sacred cows,’” Veronique “Ronnie” Hakim said in a special message that went out to employees on Monday, her first full week into the job. “I want to know what works and what doesn’t – and in a constructive fashion, we can build a better, more efficient and more results-driven organization.”

Sources close to the agency said that employees welcomed her greeting, and that Hakim was already taking steps to change the organization, including asking Kevin O’Connor, vice president of the agency’s rail division, and Joyce Gallagher, the head of the bus division, to step down.

NJ Transit spokesman John Durso Jr. did not return a phone call seeking comment. Transportation Commissioner Jim Simpson on Monday said he could not comment on any leadership changes, but that Gallagher and O’Connor were still working at the agency.

Chris Christie: Tired of Obamacare? Elect new president

Chris Christie: Tired of Obamacare? Elect new president

Chris Christie had some advice Tuesday for a constituent worried about Obamacare: “Elect a new president.”

The exchange occurred during a town hall-style event the same day that the GOP New Jersey governor, a potential White House hopeful, came under fire for his own support for Medicaid expansion under the health care law.

How is it going to affect the seniors, their insurance?” asked a woman who said she was from Toms River, NJ. “A lot of the doctor staff here are saying that they’re going to get out of it now. What do we do?”

“Yeah, well, elect a new president,” Christie said to applause at the Ocean County event.

Christie said there are areas where he and President Barack Obama agree — and spent much of the event detailing his administration’s efforts to work with the federal government on Superstorm Sandy recovery and expedite a sometimes-sluggish aid process. (Titus/Politico)

CIA Took Secret, “Unprecedented Action” Against Senate Intelligence Committee

CIA Took Secret, “Unprecedented Action” Against Senate Intelligence Committee
Nick Gillespie|Mar. 5, 2014 8:08 am

The New York Times is reporting that the CIA took what Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) called “unprecedented action” against the Senate Intelligence Committee in response to an investigation of the spy agency’s actions following the 9/11 attacks.

The [Senate Intelligence] committee has spent several years working on a voluminous report about the detention and interrogation program, and according to one official interviewed in recent days, C.I.A. officers went as far as gaining access to computer networks used by the committee to carry out its investigation….

The specifics of the inspector general’s investigation are unclear. But several officials interviewed in recent days — all of whom insisted on anonymity, citing a continuing inquiry — said it began after the C.I.A. took what Senator Mark Udall, Democrat of Colorado, on Tuesday called an “unprecedented action” against the committee.

The action, which Mr. Udall did not describe, took place after C.I.A. officials came to suspect that congressional staff members had gained unauthorized access to agency documents during the course of the Intelligence Committee’s years-long investigation into the detention and interrogation program.

Welcome to the 21st century, which is looking a whole lot like the 20th when it comes to CIA fooling around in places it shouldn’t be. The Times story is short on specifics but includes this gem from Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) who generally has never met a government incursion against civil liberties she doesn’t like.

Death by Deli : Meat and Cheese Linked to Earlier Death
By ABC News | ABC News Blogs – 10 hours ago

By Ross Charles, M.D. (@rosscharlesmd)

Too much meat and cheese may be a recipe for disaster, according to a new study that links the consumption of animal-based protein to an increased risk of early death for people in their 50s and early 60s.

The study of more than 6,000 American adults found those between the ages of 50 and 65 with diets high in animal protein were 74 percent more likely to meet an untimely end than those who consumed less animal protein or got their protein from non-animal sources.

For deaths due to cancer, the risk was four times higher, according to the study.

Eating plant-based proteins like nuts and beans seemed to reverse the unhealthy trend. And after the age of 65, the trend dissipated, suggesting that a diet high in protein from animals or plants can be beneficial later in life.

“The main message is to go to a safe level of protein and try as much as possible to have those proteins come from plant-based products,” said Dr. Valter D. Longo, director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California and lead author of the study, published today in the journal Cell Metabolism. “The advice was that everyone should have high protein. That’s not the case.”

Why did the effect disappear with older people? As we age, our demand for protein increases. So getting more of it from a host of sources after 65 is important in extending our longevity, the study found. The patients whose diets were packed with protein were more than 25 percent less likely to meet an early death.

Ridgewood selling firetruck to Bergen County

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Ridgewood will sell an aging, reserve firetruck to Bergen County for use at the police and fire training academy in Mahwah. The governing bodies from each entity passed separate resolutions last Wednesday, agreeing to the sale price of $35,000.

According to acting Village Manager Heather Mailander, the Ridgewood Fire Department was no longer using a 1991 Pierce ladder firetruck. But before the truck could hit the auction block, county officials expressed an interest in obtaining the fire apparatus.

Both Mailander and Ridgewood Fire Chief James Van Goor recommended the sale of the truck to the county. Van Goor searched Govdeals.com, an Internet auction site used by governing entities, and learned Ridgewood’s transaction withBergen County “is a good deal,” Mailander said.

Last week, a 1992 Pierce firetruck with 73,000 miles on it had a current bid of $6,000. That vehicle required several repairs and maintenance, based on the Govdeals.com listing.

As part of the deal between Ridgewood and Bergen County, the Board of Chosen Freeholders will allow the village to use the firetruck, which comes with a rear-mounted 100-foot tall aerial ladder, in the event the municipality needs it.

Ridgewood zoning board continues discussion on temporary cell tower

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Discussion continued at the Feb. 25 zoning board meeting on a proposal to place a temporary cell tower at the Exxon Mobil station on Route 17.

Several months ago, AT&T put the tower at the station without zoning board approval. The board was unaware of the tower until they were notified by Albin Court resident Diane Haderthauer at a meeting earlier this year. The board then engaged in discussions with AT&T, and on Feb. 11, the company removed the tower.

A day before, the company submitted an application to the zoning board to place a temporary tower at the same site, Zoning Officer Tony Merlino said. The process has begun to find them a spot on the zoning board’s agenda for a hearing, he said.

According to Merlino, though the application has been submitted, it is not yet complete.

The board’s counsel, Bruce Whitaker, noted that the board could stipulate that the company could leave the tower in that location for “so many months,” and if it’s still there “after X number of months… they would get fined.”

Poll: Democrats’ advantage on key issues is not translating to a midterm-election edge

By Dan Balz and Scott Clement, Published: March 3 | Updated: Tuesday, March 4, 12:01 AME-mail the writers

The American people trust Democrats more than Republicans on some of the key issues of the day, but that has not translated into any political advantage in the battle for control of the House and Senate in this year’s midterm elections, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Midterm elections generally favor the party that does not hold the White House, which gives the GOP a head start this year. Political handicappers rate Republicans as favorites to maintain their House majority and say the GOP has a legitimate opportunity to gain the six seats it needs to take control of the Senate.

The Post-ABC survey affirms those projections, showing Republicans in a stronger position than Democrats in the states with Senate races this fall and more than holding their own in the battle for control of the House. In the 34 states with Senate races, 50 percent of voters say they favor Republicans and 42 percent favor Democrats.

New O-Care delay to help midterm Dems

New O-Care delay to help midterm Dems
By Elise Viebeck

The Obama administration is set to announce another major delay in implementing the Affordable Care Act, easing election pressure on Democrats.

As early as this week, according to two sources, the White House will announce a new directive allowing insurers to continue offering health plans that do not meet ObamaCare’s minimum coverage requirements.

Prolonging the “keep your plan” fix will avoid another wave of health policy cancellations otherwise expected this fall.

The cancellations would have created a firestorm for Democratic candidates in the last, crucial weeks before Election Day.

The White House is intent on protecting its allies in the Senate, where Democrats face a battle to keep control of the chamber.

“I don’t see how they could have a bunch of these announcements going out in September,” one consultant in the health insurance industry said. “Not when they’re trying to defend the Senate and keep their losses at a minimum in the House. This is not something to have out there right before the election.”

Culture of Control is Unfair & Un-American

Culture of Control is Unfair & Un-American
Mar 4, 2014
By Rep. Scott Garrett

Despite not knowing your situation or your specific needs, perfect strangers now decide what is best for you.

WHETHER it’s the food you want to eat, the home loan you want to get, the toys your kids want to play with, the cars you want to drive or how much water your toilets can flush, America’s everyday choices have always been plentiful. A primary reason for this abundance is the tradition of negligible government intrusion in your lives.

Unfortunately, this tradition has been eroded over the years, and your choices and your freedom to make even the smallest decision are suffering because of it.

Faceless bureaucrats — strangers who have decided they know better than you — set out a handful of options that they like and force you to “choose” from them. In today’s America, this is what government bureaucrats pass off as your choice. The façade of choice is present, but — as you and I both know — we accept their dictates or else.

Riddled with subjective rules and regulations and laced with numerous mandates, President Obama’s health care law is a stifling example of government bureaucrats asserting their control over your choices. From the type of plan to the insurance provider, and from the doctor to the hospital, you no longer have true choice when it comes to your health coverage. Rather, the limited choices available to you are those deemed appropriate by our omniscient government bureaucrats.

“Sub-standard” is the word bureaucrats are using to tell Americans that they don’t like the choice they’ve made while selecting their personal insurance policy. At last count, 4.7 million Americans have been told they made the wrong choice, and are being forced by bureaucrats to pick another policy. In New Jersey alone, approximately 800,000 residents will be losing the health care plan they picked, in favor of an appropriate plan that fits the bureaucrats’ mandate — plans that may be more expensive, may have less coverage and might not serve the needs of your family.

Unfree marketplace

Like your newly restricted health coverage choices, the home loan market is no longer the robust free marketplace it once was. The type of loan, the amount you can borrow and whom you can borrow from are now all things government bureaucrats manage. Despite not knowing your situation or your specific needs, perfect strangers now decide what is best for you.

The elimination of choice doesn’t stop with your health care coverage or your home loan, sadly. Rather, it is fading with regard to nearly every aspect of your lives. Let me provide you with just a few examples.

Thought those who insist on “doing with your body as you wish” included choosing what to eat and drink? If the food is made with trans fats, think again. The FDA is close to tightly controlling those.

Thought you could choose what kind of toy to buy? Not if the Consumer Product Safety Commission doesn’t like it.  For example, the CPSC banned Buckyballs, an adult magnetic-balls desk toy, because — if swallowed — they pose a health risk.

Federal bureaucracies’ rules tell you what kind of safety equipment you must have in your car, how much ethanol must be in your fuel and what fuel economy must be regardless of its harmful effect on crashworthiness. What’s best for you and your driving habits? What’s most efficient? It doesn’t matter — your options are limited to the ones deemed worthy by bureaucrats.

It’s long been an essential element of our representative government that most of the choices we make are our choices. The reason for this is that it is impossible for a relative few bureaucrats to comprehend every situation in which we might find ourselves and subsequently decide — in advance — what limited choices will be best for everyone. A system that tries to apply narrow options to every situation does a lousy job of providing a fair solution to circumstances that fall outside a bureaucrat’s predictions or imagination. “One-size-fits-all” ends up working for no one.

When the system isn’t right for you or your family, suffocating rules and government control tend to prevent the bureaucrats from being accommodating. Americans are increasingly left out of luck and confined to ever-narrower sets of options by people they’ll never meet and didn’t elect but who have the power not only to deny them freedom of choice, but also to take their money and send them to prison if they don’t comply.

Culture of control

I believe we should welcome diverse cultures — beliefs, customs and traditions — but, when it comes to the culture of control that most government bureaucrats exist for, we must do everything in our power to reject it.

The culture of control costs us more while simultaneously making us less free. The culture of control is unkind, unreasonable, unfair and un-American. It’s time to put the kibosh on the culture of control and return to the simple, essential freedom of choice our forefathers shed blood to guarantee, and enshrined in the Constitution.
