Sewer Repair Can Be Expensive. Here’s How You Can Avoid It

Sewer-services-in-nj

When you have problems with your sewer lateral, the sewer service, NJ or line repairs that you’ll need aren’t particularly cheap. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable. Between the materials needed, and the skilled labor from experienced sewer repair contractors, sewer pipe repair is one of the more expensive plumbing services.

Because of the cost and hassle of sewer repair in New Jersey, major sewer pipe problems are something you’ll want to avoid if at all possible. Fortunately for homeowners, there are preventive measures that you can take to maintain your sewer lateral, preventing problems and increasing its service life. You’ll need repairs less often, and you won’t need sewer pipe replacement as soon. All in all, it’s worth paying attention to taking care of your sewer line.

When you do need sewer repairs in NJ, we’re available 24/7 for emergency sewer services at A1 Sewer & Drain Services. You can always call us for same-day sewer repair service with fast response times. Our experienced contractors provide quality service that will hold up for years to come, helping you prevent the need for further repairs in the future. For sewer repairs today, call us any time at A1 Sewer & Drain Services, at 201-645-0888.

Risk Factors for Sewer Repair NJ

Because your sewer lateral is buried underground, homeowners tend to be unaware of minor sewer problems that could ultimately spiral out of control. Cracks, holes, water leaks, and invasive tree roots can persist for months or years with few symptoms, until one day your drains back up and it becomes obvious that there’s a problem.

These problems can often mean that you’re going to need sewer repairs or sewer cleaning soon. If you catch the problem early, you can reduce your expenses.

Constantly Clogged Sewer Pipes & Drains

Individual drains back up all the time from hair, kitchen grease, food particles, and other various debris that makes its way into the pipes. This is usually a pretty simple fix, and homeowners can sometimes fix the problem on their own.

If your household drains seem like they’re always clogging, though, it could be a sign of a deeper problem. Obstructions or damage in your sewer line can cause drains throughout your home to back up frequently. Ultimately, this can lead to backflow that can cause water damage.

Keeping your drains clear can help prevent debris from eventually building up inside the sewer pipe. Some of the most common causes of sewer and drain clogs include:

  • Kitchen grease. Cooking grease is a leading cause of clogged plumbing pipes, including sewer lines. Oil, bacon grease, lard, and similar cooking substances are lipids. This type of chemical is hydrophobic, and doesn’t break down easily in water. Instead of dissolving, grease will simply build up in drain pipes and sewer lines.
  • Soap scum from detergent. Dish detergent can produce soap scum that can clog drains over time.
  • Food particles. Some foods are particularly likely to get stuck in drains. Rice and pasta are commonly found in clogged drains, since they expand so readily in water.
  • Feminine products. Hygiene products that aren’t toilet paper shouldn’t be flushed. Paper towels, feminine products, diapers, facial tissues, and similar items are designed not to dissolve easily. Because of this, they commonly clog up sewer lines.

Tree Roots in Your Sewer Line

Tree roots growing inside a sewer pipe are a major cause of serious damage, and homeowners may not realize the problem until it’s too late. New Jersey is naturally forested, and large trees can have root systems extending for hundreds of feet. A tree that isn’t even on your property could invade your sewer line through pre-existing cracks and holes, eventually causing serious damage and sewer backflow.

Corrosion, Scale, and Aging Pipes

Sewer pipes can have a surprisingly long service life, but eventually, any property will need sewer line replacement. Old metal sewer pipes can succumb to chemical and biological processes that cause corrosion, leading to cracks, holes, and leaks.

These holes also provide an entry point for invasive tree roots, compounding the problem. Similarly, scale buildup and calcification can narrow the pipe and cause sewer clogs and backflow. Once a sewer pipe has reached the end of its lifespan, it needs to be replaced.

Preventing Sewer Repair in NJ

There are a few things that homeowners can do to minimize the risk of serious sewer problems that require professional sewer repair service, including:

  • Annual sewer camera inspection. We recommend annual inspection to look for cracks, leaks, tree roots, clogs, and other potential problems. Fixing the problem early helps prevent it from becoming a serious concern.
  • Sewer cleaning. Sewer cleaning with hydro jetting removes debris that blocks and damages pipes. This helps reduce the risk of sewer backflow.
  • Sewer replacement for old pipes. Aging sewer pipes are a ticking time bomb that could eventually break or collapse. Sewer pipes over about 60 years old will need replacement soon.

TRENTON — Two New Jersey state troopers cuffed a woman along a Warren County roadway and hauled her in on an obstruction charge because she refused to answer questions during a routine traffic stop, according to dashboard camera footage obtained by NJ Advance Media.

The Oct. 16 incident, which happened near the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border on Route 519, is now the subject of a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by the woman, Rebecca Musarra, an attorney from Philadelphia.

Musarra claims in the suit the troopers violated basic rules familiar to anybody who’s ever watched a police show on TV, including the right to remain silent.

She claims at least three troopers insisted during the ordeal that her refusal to answer questions was a criminal act.

Village of Ridgewood candidates Willett, Weitz, and Brooks Continue to Push the Exclusionary Divisive Politics of the Current Council Majority

Ridgewood NJ, The progress Ridgewood group has an ad in the paper saying those are the 3 that will be at the candidates forum at Park West Loft on May 2nd. You can only go, if you signed the pledge, so i guess that means they signed it. Nice to know that 3 ( Janice M. Willett, Evan Weitz, and Richard S. Brooks )of the candidates have already decided to be exclusionary, and not listen to others that may have a different opinion then them.
At the candidates debate, all 6 candidates said the current council has been too divisive. Some of the language from the 3 that signed the pledge said “all groups need to be included and involved”, “the council works for everybody. Everybody needs to be informed”, “lead by example”, “public discourse needs to be lifter to a higher level”, “inclusiveness, solutions, and a united approach to figuring out where we’re going, and how to get there”.

3 amigos or Council majority
Nice to know that the 3 have already shown us that their words don’t mean much, since their actions have proven to be the opposite.
If you want your village government to be exclusionary, then you know who to vote for.
If you want your village government to be individually thinking people, with varying backgrounds, who are willing to discuss the issues with anyone, you need to vote for Voigt, Hache and Walsh.

U.S. Suicide Rate Surges to a 30-Year High

Depression

By SABRINA TAVERNISEAPRIL 22, 2016

WASHINGTON — Suicide in the United States has surged to the highest levels in nearly 30 years, a federal data analysis has found, with increases in every age group except older adults. The rise was particularly steep for women. It was also substantial among middle-aged Americans, sending a signal of deep anguish from a group whose suicide rates had been stable or falling since the 1950s.

The suicide rate for middle-aged women, ages 45 to 64, jumped by 63 percent over the period of the study, while it rose by 43 percent for men in that age range, the sharpest increase for males of any age. The overall suicide rate rose by 24 percent from 1999 to 2014, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, which released the study on Friday.

The increases were so widespread that they lifted the nation’s suicide rate to 13 per 100,000 people, the highest since 1986. The rate rose by 2 percent a year starting in 2006, double the annual rise in the earlier period of the study. In all, 42,773 people died from suicide in 2014, compared with 29,199 in 1999.

Get politics out of climate debate: Opposing view

Al-Gore-Global-Warming-32824

John Coleman4:29 p.m. EDT April 21, 2016

Science has taken a back seat at the United Nations.

On this Earth Day 2016, there is a great deal of frenzy about how our Earth is going to become uninhabitable, as the civilized activities of man allegedly trigger unstoppable global warming and climate change.

With the Obama administration set to commit the U.S. to the Paris climate agreement by signing our nation onto the document Friday, it is obvious that science has taken a back seat at the United Nations.

The environmentalists, bureaucrats and politicians who make up the U.N.’s climate panel recruit scientists to research the climate issue. And they place only those who will produce the desired results. Money, politics and ideology have replaced science.

U.N. climate chief Christiana Figueres has called for a “centralized transformation” that is “going to make the life of everyone on the planet very different” to combat the alleged global warming threat. How many Americans are looking forward to the U.N. transforming their lives?

New Jersey has to rethink its budget because one guy moved

14405_trenton_new_jersey_s_state_house_capitol_in_trenton

Linette Lopez

If you move away from your home state, some friends might throw you a party. Maybe you’ll get a happy-hour discount at your local bar.

If you’re really a big deal, you might get to throw out the first pitch at your local minor-league baseball team’s next game.

Other than that, everything will be pretty much the same after you’re gone.

That is, of course, unless you’re billionaire David Tepper.

If you are him, then when you move away you have the potential to send your whole state ( in this case New Jersey) into red-alert mode.

Tepper, the founder of the hedge fund Appaloosa Management, moved to Florida last fall. This, according to Bloomberg, has leaders of his former state very concerned.

Reader says , “Mrs. Hauck is the most egregious example of Ridgewood’s poor representation”

Reader says , “I think that Mrs. Hauck is the most egregious example of Ridgewood’s poor representation. While negotiating the Village’s settlement of the Hospital’s lawsuit against us, she gave Valley virtually everything they’ve ever asked for – even after Valley acknowledged that their expansion will be detrimental to Ridgewood (but good for the region – yay!). I understand that Mrs. Hauck has deep affection for and a long affiliation with Valley, but as a Council person she should be looking out for the people she was elected to represent. It’s a shame that the Village will be changed forever over the handful of votes that she won by.”

Mass surveillance silences minority opinions, according to study

big-brother-poster

By Karen Turner March 28 at 11:15 AM

A new study shows that knowledge of government surveillance causes people to self-censor their dissenting opinions online. The research offers a sobering look at the oft-touted “democratizing” effect of social media and Internet access that bolsters minority opinion.

The study, published in Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, studied the effects of subtle reminders of mass surveillance on its subjects. The majority of participants reacted by suppressing opinions that they perceived to be in the minority. This research illustrates the silencing effect of participants’ dissenting opinions in the wake of widespread knowledge of government surveillance, as revealed by whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2013.

Scott Walker era has been good for most income taxpayers, report finds

Walker-Scott-R-WI

By M.D. Kittle  /   March 22, 2016

MADISON, Wis. – Contrary to the left’s claim that Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s tax cuts have only helped the rich, a new report by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance finds most taxpayers have seen their income taxes decline during the Walker era – some significantly.

And the rich didn’t make the cut.

The nonprofit, nonpartisan group’s study found middle-income earners who made between $20,000 and $50,000 a year saw their income taxes drop by 32 percent from 2008 to 2014, the latest data available. Their average bill dropped from $688 in 2008 – during Democrat Gov. Jim Doyle’s last term in office – to $467 in 2014, the final year of Walker’s first term.

Taxes fell 7.6 percent over the period for filers with annual incomes between $50,000 and $100,000, according to the study. Their tax burden declined from $3,167 to $2,926.

Todd Berry, president of the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, acknowledges 2008 and 2009 were trying times for state budgets everywhere. Doyle and the Democrats responded by raising taxes in the 2009 budget.

TAX RELIEF: Most taxpayers have seen some income tax relief during Gov. Scott Walker’s time in office. The exception, contrary to the left’s spin, is Wisconsin’s wealthiest taxpayers.

But in 2013-14 in particular, Walker called for sweeping tax cuts and the Republican-controlled Legislature complied, thanks in large part to better-than-expected revenue.

“They don’t get much credit for it but they really deserve credit for it,” Berry told Wisconsin Watchdog this week on the Vicki McKenna Show on NewsTalk 1310 WIBA. “(It was) one of the first times I can remember in my 30, 40 years of watching the income tax that they actually cleaned up the income tax law a little bit, got rid of some of the stuff people aren’t using.”

Walker and the Republicans received only scorn and spin from their political foes.

Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca, D-Kenosha, has called the tax cuts a giveaway for Wisconsin’s wealthiest.

“If this is anything like the Republicans’ past tax plans, it will primarily benefit the wealthy and not have an impact on most Wisconsin families,” Barca said as Republicans promoted another round of tax cuts in 2014.

In fact, a new top tax bracket created by controlling Democrats in 2009 led to a 5.7 percent increase in income tax liability for filers earning more than $500,000 a year. Their taxes climbed from $74,107 in 2008 to $78,345 in 2014.

“By far the largest percentage reduction was the $20,000 to $50,000 range.  Surprisingly the tax burden actually went up at the really high range,” Berry said.

Individuals with income under $20,000 saw a cut in their refundable tax credits due to changes in tax law. As a group, these filers do not pay income tax, but the state writes them a check thanks to the tax credits.

In 2013, all tax rates were reduced and the number of tax brackets was reduced from five to four.

The top rate was trimmed from 7.75 percent to 7.65 percent, while the bottom rate dropped from 4.6 percent in 2012 to 4 percent in 2014.

Still, there has been little will to bring significant tax reform to the table.

Berry said the state income tax is essentially one of the largest government regulations anyone faces, and Wisconsin remains one of the most tax-burdened states in the nation.

The Badger State in 2013 ranked 7th in percentage of income taxes claimed, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Wisconsin ranked 11th,  at $1,262 in per capita income tax collected.

“If we want to reduce that burden, then we have got to make it a lot easier and quicker and less emotionally draining to file a state income tax return,” Berry said. “Unfortunately, partisans on both sides of the aisle love to propose little deductions and exemptions and credits so they can have a press release. The problem is that that just keeps adding to the instructions and to the length of the form.”

Sign of things to come : Hundreds of Paterson employees not sure when they will resume work

Paterson Falls

BY JOE MALINCONICO
PATERSON PRESS

PATERSON – As municipal employees filed out of City Hall at quitting time on Monday, one of their colleagues stood near the doorway and wished them a “Good Holiday.”

Only 453 Paterson employees hold positions the administration deems essential – mostly police officers, firefighters and sanitation collectors – and were told to come back to work on Tuesday. The rest are supposed to stay home as the budget showdown between the mayor and city council continued toward what now seems like an inevitable partial shutdown of municipal government.

The shutdown will affect school crossing guards, street-cleaning, after-school recreation programs and senior citizen services, officials said.

Paterson’s non-essential employees are in limbo and have been told to call the city’s hotline Tuesday night to find out if the council approves the mayor’s budget proposal, a move needed to allow them to resume work on Wednesday.

“I’m angry,” said Joanne Bottler, a tax search officer. “I have a sick mother I care for and losing a day’s pay is going to be a hardship.”

February 29th whats going on here?

leap year

Leap Year 2016: Why does February have 29 days every four years?

When is it, why does it happen and everything else you need to know about the leap year in 2016

Why do we have leap years?

A leap year, where an extra day is added to the end of February every four years, is down to the Gregorian calendar’s disparity with the solar system.

A complete orbit of the earth around the sun takes exactly 365.2422 days to complete, but the Gregorian calendar uses 365 days.

So leap seconds – and leap years – are added as means of keeping our clocks (and calendars) in sync with the Earth and its seasons.

Julius Caesar vs Pope Gregory

The Roman calendar used to have 355 days with an extra 22-day month every two years until Julius Caesar became emperor in the 1st Century and ordered his Alexandrian astronomer Sosigenes to devise something better.

Sosigenes decided on a 365-day year with an extra day every four years to incorportate the extra hours, and so February 29th was born.

In 46 BC, Julius Caesar, featured here in a self-decreed minted coin, created a calendar system that added one leap day every four years.

The system was tweaked, however, about 500 years later.

As an earth year is not exactly 365.25 days long Pope Gregory XIII’s astronomers decided to lose three days every 400 years when they introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1582.

The maths has worked ever since but the system will need to be rethought in about 10,000 years’ time. Perhaps mankind’s robot overlords will think of something.

Why does the extra day fall in February?

All the other months in the Julian calendar have 30 or 31 days, but February lost out to the ego of Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus.

Under his predecessor Julius Caesar, Feb had 30 days and the month named after him – July – had 31. August had only 29 days.

When Caesar Augustus became Emperor he added two days to ‘his’ month to make August the same as July.

So February lost out to August in the battle of the extra days.

Google Ad Business Under Scrutiny as EU Said to Revive Probe

EU officials quizzed firms involved in advertising market
Escalation comes as Google CEO Pichai set to meet with EU

The European Union is reviving a probe into Google’s advertising practices with an inquiry that adds to active EU antitrust investigations into the company’s mobile operating system and shopping search services.

The EU has been quizzing companies involved in online advertising in recent weeks about Google’s behavior, according to three people with knowledge of the investigation who asked not to be named because the process is confidential. Officials are seeking data that may be used to build a so-called statement of objections listing areas where they suspect Google breaches antitrust rules, they said.

Google’s $1 billion payment to Apple Inc. to keep its search bar on the iPhone is one of the kind of exclusivity agreements regulators are looking at, one of the people said. The EU move rekindles part of a probe they first announced in 2010 into contracts with websites that shut out non-Google advertising services and deals with computer and software vendors that prevent them using other search tools.
