It may shock you to learn the suicide rate among middle school students is on the rise.

Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows between 2007 and 2014, there were 50 reported suicides among middle school students in New Jersey.

This is a growing problem, according to experts, because of cyber-bullying, social and academic pressures and fear and uncertainty about the dangerous world we live in.

“The belief in the past has always been that young people just didn’t struggle with mental health issues and that belief is starting to change” said Tricia Baker, the co-founder and program director of Attitudes in Reverse, a group that talks to Jersey kids in middle and high school about suicide.

“Fifty percent of mental health disorders present before age 14, and that’s why it’s so important we talk to young people about what mental health disorder are.”

Baker’s son Kenny took his own life in 2009 when he was 19 after struggling with mental health issues from the time he was a young child.

Allergies Linked to Suicide

allergies

Ridgewood NJ, in a recent study by Teodor T. Postolache, MD, Hirsh Komarow, MD, and Leonardo H. Tonelli, PhD conclude that ,”The rates of depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance (suicide risk factors) are greater in patients with allergic rhinitis than in the general population. The rate of allergy is also greater in patients with depression. Preliminary data suggest that patients with a history of allergy may have an increased rate of suicide. They also advise , “Clinicians should actively inquire to diagnose allergy in patients with depression and depression in patients with allergy.”

In their conclusion they claim a correlation with , “Spring peaks of suicide are highly replicated, but their origin is poorly understood. Preliminary epidemiologic data suggest that seasonal spring peaks in aeroallergens are associated with seasonal spring peaks in suicide.”

And claim ,” it is possible that sensitization and exposure to aeroallergens, which peak in spring, may be conducive to seasonal exacerbation of suicide risk factors such as anxiety, depression, hostility/ aggression, and sleep disturbance.”

They go even further stating ,” Certain medications used to treat allergy can exacerbate suicide risk factors, potentially worsening suicide risk and even triggering suicide.

Port Authority eyeing harness-equipped suicide prevention units on George Washington Bridge

GWB

At least one Emergency Service Unit tandem — two cops equipped with harnesses — would be permanently stationed on the George Washington Bridge to more quickly respond to people trying to jump from the iconic span, according to a proposal under consideration.

The Port Authority Police Department’s top cop said Monday that the plan would be discussed Tuesday — among other options — to address safety concerns raised by union officials and officers assigned to the agency’s suicide prevention team.

“The safety of our officers is the most important thing,” said Port Authority Police Superintendent Michael Fedorko. “I want to give them all the support they need.”

The Daily News reported Sunday that members of the Port Authority Police Department’s Suicide Prevention Walkway Patrol-Suicide Prevention Team saved 70 people from jumping from the George Washington Bridge last year.

U.S. Suicide Rate Surges to a 30-Year High

Depression

By SABRINA TAVERNISEAPRIL 22, 2016

WASHINGTON — Suicide in the United States has surged to the highest levels in nearly 30 years, a federal data analysis has found, with increases in every age group except older adults. The rise was particularly steep for women. It was also substantial among middle-aged Americans, sending a signal of deep anguish from a group whose suicide rates had been stable or falling since the 1950s.

The suicide rate for middle-aged women, ages 45 to 64, jumped by 63 percent over the period of the study, while it rose by 43 percent for men in that age range, the sharpest increase for males of any age. The overall suicide rate rose by 24 percent from 1999 to 2014, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, which released the study on Friday.

The increases were so widespread that they lifted the nation’s suicide rate to 13 per 100,000 people, the highest since 1986. The rate rose by 2 percent a year starting in 2006, double the annual rise in the earlier period of the study. In all, 42,773 people died from suicide in 2014, compared with 29,199 in 1999.

Tyler Clementi’s family become advocates after suicide

SEPTEMBER 21, 2014, 1:29 PM    LAST UPDATED: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2014, 1:29 PM
BY SEAN CARLIN
ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW BRUNSWICK  — Tyler Clementi’s family could have stayed silent after he killed himself.

They could have, understandably, hid from the spotlight and attention thrust upon them when he jumped from the George Washington Bridge after his roommate’s webcam captured him with another man inside his Rutgers dorm room.

But four years after his death, the Clementis have used the pain they still feel every day to encourage acceptance and eradicate bullying.

“We could have retreated,” said Clementi’s father, Joseph, who with his family founded the Tyler Clementi Foundation. “We didn’t want to see this kind of thing happen to other kids and have it affect other families the way it affected ours.”

Just weeks into his freshman year, Clementi, of Ridgewood, jumped off the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 22, 2010. His roommate, Dharun Ravi, ultimately served 20 days in jail after being convicted of bias intimidation, invasion of privacy and other crimes.

The Clementi foundation raises awareness of bullying and cyber-bullying, particularly in the LGBT community. Its initiatives include building support for LGBT and vulnerable youth through partnerships and legislative advocacy, as well as having family members speak at different organizations and groups to encourage more “inclusive environments.”
