Another exciting summer at the Kasschau Shell
To the Editor:
Thursday, Aug. 6 was the final performance of the Kasschau Memorial Shell Concert Series. It was an exciting performance of gospel music by Mack Brandon and the Connection. The audience joined in on a number of songs and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
I must thank the generous sponsors who support this exceptional summer series. Our performers have appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the New Jersey PAC. They are artists who have performed on Broadway and played in pit orchestras of Broadway shows. We have listened to the beautiful voices of Mark and Christie McVey, Greg Caldarone and Andy Cooney and danced to rock music and the big band sound. We have sung along with Bobby Byrne and marveled at the virtuosity of Bucky Pizzarelli. Their level of professional experience is incredible and all one had to do was bring a chair or blanket and head to the shell. I encourage all to look for our flyers next year and join the fun.
Thanks go to the wonderful and helpful people at the Parks and Recreation Department. Nancy, Marge, Tim and Mary helped make everything work smoothly. Jared Montgomery is an exceptional soundman, and he and Jack Stofka, his assistant, did an outstanding job. Thanks also goes to The Ridgewood News who gave us excellent coverage and thus encouraged attendances.
Our sponsors are community-minded and generous contributors who make Ridgewood special. Most have been our supporters for many years and deserve recognition:
Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill, Backyard Living, Boiling Springs Savings Bank, BRANDfog, Care One at the Cupola and Care One at Ridgewood Avenue, Chyten Educational Services, Clemente Orthodontics, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Corp., Columbia Bank, Daily Treat Family Restaurant, Feeney Funeral Home, Hudson City Savings Bank, One Shop Wireless Inc., Park West Tavern, Ridgewood A.M. Rotary Club, Warren Boardman D.M.D., Tarvin Realtors, Ulrich Inc., The Valley Hospital, Valley National Bank, Van Dyk Health Care Inc., West Ridgewood Dental Professionals, Wostbrock Home & Design and of course, the Village of Ridgewood.
Final recognition must go to the Kasschau Memorial Shell Committee. They are a convivial and dependable group who give their time to bring music to Ridgewood. It’s a wonderful committee to be part of and if you are interested contact the Stable.

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
The 57th annual free summer Entertainment Under the Stars concert series kicked off on Thursday at the Kasschau Memorial Band Shell.
“Tunes in June,” featuring groups from Ridgewood High School, was the first show of the season.
“It’s been a tradition that it starts off with the RHS band,” said Jo Delaney, chairman of the Kasschau Memorial Shell Committee. “This has been going on for 50 years and they’ve been associated for forever.”
The Orpheus Club, The Ridgewood Choral and The Ridgewood Concert Band are also regular performers.
“These three groups have been part of the history since beginning,” Delaney said.
This year’s lineup is “an eclectic group of musical experiences by professional artists,” Delaney said. “We’re really across the board. There’s something for everybody.”
“We tried to have all sorts of groups so people have all kinds of music to enjoy and hear something new,” Delaney said. “Expose yourself to something you haven’t heard before and open yourself up to music.”

Reader says The Mike Sedon incident casts a long dark shadow over the august council chambers
The Mike Sedon incident casts a long dark shadow over the august council chambers. Civil behavior will not make it go away.
I am still wondering who wrote the letter or email to Mike Sedon’s former employer saying Mike shouldn’t be allowed to run for Ridgewood council because he is news reporter in Staten Island.
I am sure it wasn’t his wife or mother. That was an uncivil act if I ever saw one. But wait, are we talking about courtesy and politeness only, the veneer of civility. Because in the dictionary that’s what civility means, acting polite and courteous. Or are we talking about ethical and moral behavior too.
Reader says a Parking Garage may actually make the downtown more pedestrian friendly and safer
Parking Garage, in the downtown area on Franklin, with store fronts on Walnut and Franklin to create a facade that would hide the garage structure. Remove Parking from some some streets partially or entirely. This would force people to use the garage, and may actually make the downtown more pedestrian friendly and safer. A possible enticement is for restaurants and stores to provide partial parking vouchers when purchases are made in their establishment. I’ve heard this was done in California with good success.

Reader Suggests Locating a Town Garage at the Schedler Property
Not sure if we really need a third firehouse to handle the half a dozen fires we have in town each year but if we combined it with a police station to handle the increase in the size of the police force it might be cost effective. If the police were stationed there it would also stop the spike in crime.
A town garage would be a perfect use for that property. With the easy on/off access from Rt. 17 the Village could move all of its trucks, loaders, and equipment over there. Sanitation could move all of their garbage trucks over there as well as the recycling that is currently behind the fire house. There would be plenty of room for storage of sand and salt and I would bet there is even room for the mulching unit that property is so big. The Village could explore a joint usage agreement with the BOE who could store all of their trucks, mowers, tractors, and plows there as well and get that stuff out from behind BF where it takes up a lot of parking spaces and looks like hell. With the property completely fenced in with 10 foot high privacy fencing and a police substation, crime would not be a problem. It would also be a natural spot for the cell tower that is currently across Rt. 17 and is causing so much consternation. I think the cell tower would be a revenue generator as well.
With the recycling moved from behind the firehouse that land could be allowed to return to its natural state and Village’s net open space remains the same. The brook that carries the treated sewage water from Waldwick will then be able to flood and not damage any Village vehicles.
Thankfully the Village Council has not accepted the Village Engineering Dept’s plan for a multi-use park that contains an athletic field that might have been used a couple of hours a day. Although many residents could have used such a facility, by using the property for a multi-use Municipal Garage, Firehouse, Police Substation, Recycling Center, and Storage area everyone in town will benefit from a reduction in taxes as well as the revenue from the cell tower. Brilliant!
I would recommend that the plans for such a facility be drawn up as quickly as possible. Once the snow and ice are gone construction could begin as early as this spring and the site could be fully functioning by late fall.

Summer concerts season is in swing across North Jersey

The Record
Somewhere beyond the sweltering days of heat and humidity is a cool summer night filled with free music, theater and music under the stars.
The Fourth of July fireworks have faded from the sky and given way to the summer concert season, now in full swing in North Jersey. So grab a beach chair and a blanket; chances are you won’t have to go far to find free entertainment on a weeknight.
“How important is it to get out of the house on a Wednesday or Thursday night?” mused Nancy Bigos, deputy director of Parks and Recreation for the Village of Ridgewood. “It’s a great way to spend a summer evening.”
Summer concerts are a long-standing tradition in Ridgewood and many other towns. Ridgewood last week kicked off its 55th season at the Kasschau Memorial Shell with a performance by Bobby Byrne, who delighted a crowd of about 300 with a set of mostly Broadway tunes.
“I can’t believe this has been going on for 55 years,” Byrne said before launching into “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” which had many people clapping along. The sun set, and the only light came from the stage and the citronella candles scattered about the crowd as another outdoor concert season was under way.
