Ridgewood NJ, The Village of Ridgewood Health Department would like to remind residents that 2018 dog license renewals are due during the month of June. A $20 late fee will be charged for all renewals received after June 30, 2018.
The Ridgewood FREE dog rabies clinic and micro chipping event will be held on Wednesday, May 23rd from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Graydon Pool Parking Lot on Northern Parkway.
The health department will be sending renewals notices via email. If you do not have an email address please call our office and request a renewal to be mailed to you.

Renewal applications may also be obtained by visiting our website at www.ridgewoodnj.net or coming in person to the Ridgewood Health Department, 131 North Maple Ave. The office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm. Please call 201 670-5500 ext. 502 with questions.

New Jersey law requires owners of all dogs seven months of age or older to be registered with the town where they live. In order for the license to be issued, the owner must present proof that a licensed veterinarian has vaccinated the dog against rabies and that the duration of immunity from that vaccination does not expire before May 1, 2019. To receive the discount for a spayed or neutered pet, proof must also be provided.

Reader says No–not Harwin and not a special election.

If a council member does not complete his or her four-year term, the four remaining council members may appoint someone to take his or her place. Then, at the next regularly scheduled village council election, the appointed person may run or not.
This is very unusual but it happened only 8 years ago when Annie Zusy (elected in 2008) died in June 2010 after less than two years in office. The council was entitled to appoint a new council member but decided for various reasons to wait until the general election that November, when the slate of anyone who wished to run for village council (and fulfilled all requirements) could be added to the (already jammed) ballot. That election was expected to attract more voters than the usual village council election because it included a representative to the House (Garrett was reelected to District 5 by almost 2 to 1) .
The village council spent the intervening months with four council members. In November 2010, Stephen Wellinghorst was elected to complete Annie’s term, which he began immediately. When Zusy’s four-year term ran out in mid-2012, Wellinghorst could have run for reelection, but to the surprise of many, he didn’t.

Ridgewood NJ, A Subaru parked on Katherine Road in Ridgewood was a casualty of Tuesday afternoon’s wind and rain storm. A PSE&G trouble shooter had disconnected power to this area moments before these photos were taken.

Ridgewood Police take driver into custody for suspected DUI

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Police took the adult female driver of a red colored, 4-door, Ford Fusion into custody for suspected DUI after a Maltbie Avenue, Ridgewood resident called 911 to report a vehicle had driven into his driveway and struck his unoccupied/parked car on Wednesday afternoon, 05/16. Midland Park Police assisted Ridgewood officers with the investigation and arrest. As the home’s residents watched from their front lawn, a flatbed tow truck removed the suspect’s seemingly undamaged car from the driveway and took it to an impound facility. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Ridgewood NJ, according to the Ridgewood police department ,the Touch a Truck event scheduled for today 5/17/18 at Van Neste Square Park has been cancelled to do inclement weather. There is no rain date at this time.

The Touch a Truck event was scheduled to take place from 9am to 2pm .

The dog rabies clinic and micro chipping event scheduled for yesterday 5/16/18 at Graydon pool parking lot was postponed due to weather.

As soon as we know the new dates or any information we will pass it on .

New Jersey Appellate Court ruling: No residency requirement for OPRA

Ridgewood NJ, An Appellate Court ruled today that the right to request records under the state’s Open Public Records Act (OPRA) is not limited to New Jersey residents. The ruling upheld a lower court opinion in Burlington County and reversed lower courts in Cape May and Atlantic Counties. The three cases were consolidated for the purpose of the Appellate Court’s review.

An excerpt from the 5/16/2018 Appellate Court opinion:

“We conclude that the reference to “citizens” — found in N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1 and nowhere else in OPRA — expresses the Legislature’s general intent to make New Jersey government records open to the public, rather than expressing an intent to limit access to only New Jersey residents or domiciliaries. Because the more specific provisions of OPRA refer to “any person,” and because OPRA is to be construed broadly to achieve the Legislature’s over-arching goal of making public records freely available, we conclude that the right to request records under OPRA is not limited to “citizens” of New Jersey.”

Tractor Trailer Stuck on the Glenwood Road

Ho Ho Kus NJ, Numerous summonses were issued to the driver and registered owner of a tractor trailer that got stuck on the Glenwood Road, Ridgewood hill leading up from the Ho-Ho-Kus train station on Wednesday afternoon, 05/16. Police officers from Ho-Ho-Kus Police, Ridgewood Police, and NJ Transit Police were dispatched to the incident. The truck was finally freed from its predicament when a heavy duty tow truck winched it up the hill. Motor vehicle traffic was rerouted until the roadway was clear.

Senate President Steve Sweeney , “We cannot tax our way out of this fiscal crisis”

MONROE TOWNSHIP NJ, in an interesting turn of events Senate President Steve Sweeney today told business leaders that major changes in New Jersey’s fiscal policy and government structure are needed to make the state competitive and affordable, and vowed that the Legislature’s leadership will have the political will to make the necessary changes.

Seems that years of running the state into the ground has taken its tool ,“We cannot tax our way out of this fiscal crisis,” Senator Sweeney (D-Gloucester) said at a New Jersey Business and Industry Association forum. “The problems we face – from pensions to school funding, from health care costs to property taxes – are deep-rooted and complex, and the solutions are politically difficult. But I promise you that we will have the political will on a bipartisan basis to make the changes we need to make New Jersey competitive and affordable.”

Senator Sweeney praised the ongoing efforts of the economists, academics and tax policy experts serving on the Economic and Fiscal Policy Working Group he convened under the bipartisan leadership of Senate Budget Chair Paul Sarlo (D-Bergen), Senator Steve Oroho (R-Sussex) and Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald (D-Camden) to find solutions to the state’s long-term fiscal crisis. Assembly Budget Chair Eliana Pintor-Marin (D-Essex) and Senators Anthony Bucco Sr. (R-Morris) and Dawn Addiego (R-Burlington) are also serving on the panel.

“This initiative grew out of our concern over the impact of the federal tax law, which unfairly targets high-cost states like New Jersey by virtually eliminating the personal income tax deduction for state and local income, property and sales taxes,” said Senator Sweeney. “We are doing everything we can to reduce the impact, including developing legislation to enable S corporations, LLCs and partnerships to pay the state income tax liabilities of their owners and partners. These businesses will be able to deduct $35 billion in taxes as a result of our work.

“But we realize that it isn’t enough to just respond to the federal tax law. We have to do more – a lot more. Our panel will be coming out with a series of recommendations that will bolster our underfunded pension systems, control health care costs, hold down property taxes and ensure that government services are delivered with efficiency and cost-effectiveness at the level of government that makes the most sense.”

Senator Sweeney said the panel is undertaking a long-overdue examination of the adequacy, fairness and competitiveness of New Jersey’s state and local tax structure, and benchmarking New Jersey tax levels against other states.
“We are committed to making New Jersey competitive and affordable in order to attract jobs and businesses, bolster housing values and make our state a desirable location for millennials to create start-ups, for young families to choose to raise their children, and for senior citizens to retire.”

According to Annie Holmquist of  Intellectual Takeout , “It’s a commonly accepted fact that reading offers far more cognitive benefits than watching television. This is largely because television is a more “passive” activity, while reading goes deeper, encouraging greater thought and fostering verbal communication.”

Holmguist points out a 2017 study out of Kensington University in London that suggests that the advantage of choosing reading over television can have more than cognitive benefits; it can have behavioral benefits as well. According to the Daily Mail, researchers studied the interpersonal relations of those who chose reading over television viewing and discovered the following results:

“Readers were more likely to act in a socially acceptable manner while those who preferred watching television came across as less friendly and less understanding of others’ views, researchers said.”

Re-elect Knudsen & Sedon for Village Council

Dear friends, supporters, and fellow Ridgewood residents,
We are humbled by the outpouring of support that you sent our way throughout the Village Council election campaign. The last few weeks were difficult, even painful, in some ways, although also positive as we geared up for our big win. We hope that future council candidates will recognize and embrace our shared values of honesty, decency, and commitment to what is best for our community and will gear their campaign materials to their own plans and accomplishments rather than to denigrating their opponents. We can proudly state that despite being goaded, we refused to travel that route.
Thank you to the hundreds of residents who signed nominating petitions in February and March and to the many residents who helped in March, April, and early May with coffees and “meet-and-greets,” lawn sign distribution and pickup, canvassing, phone banks, train station presence, website upkeep, emailing and texting, letter writing, chauffeuring, editing and proofreading, financial donations (it’s getting increasingly expensive to run for council), cooking and baking, and even wardrobe consultation (that pink blouse).
If you did something that we have omitted here, thank you for that, too. We recognize the countless hours you spent away from your families and other responsibilities and activities that you are just catching up with now. We appreciated every work hour, every positive message, every hug, the cards and flowers. In short, we are deeply grateful for everything our wonderful fellow residents did to help us win re-election. We thank the thousands of Ridgewood residents who believed in us enough to vote for us.

Ridgewood NJ, Trees toppled into several structures throughout the Village of Ridgewood during a fast moving Tuesday afternoon, 05/15, wind and rain storm. Ridgewood Fire department was kept busy assessing damage for several hours, beginning moments after the storm began. Despite the heavy structural damage caused, no injuries were reported.

According to the Ridgewood Police , There are numerous locations in town with trees and power lines down. Treat all wires as if they are live and stay away. To report a power outage call PSEG 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).

Ridgewood Nj, the National Weather Service has declared a “Hazardous Weather Outlook” is for southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey and southeast New York.

There is the possibility of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, with the main threat damaging wind gusts and possibly large hail. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out as well, mainly north and west of New York City.

In addition, locally heavy rainfall is possible with any stronger convection. While the main threat is for minor flooding of urban and poor drainage areas, there is a small chance for localized flash flooding.
