New York NY, St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday this year, and in observance of Lent 2023,  Catholics are required to abstain from eating meat ,including the traditional holiday favorite of corned beef and cabbage.

But luckily for Catholic carnivores, the Archbishop of New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan decreed that he will again allow special dispensation for corned beef on March 17.

“As a rule, the church makes laws and expects us to abide by them,” vicar general of the Archdiocese of New York, Monsignor Joseph P. LaMorte, said in a statement. “But sometimes there are circumstances that make it possible to obtain a dispensation from obeying a law.”

In New Jersey for those members of the faithful celebrating this Solemnity and who desire it, the Archdiocese of Newark Cardinal Joseph Tobin, C.Ss.R.  has dispensed the penitential obligation to abstain from meat on Friday, March 17.  A substitution should be made in the form of fasting, prayer and/or almsgiving.
