  2. This is very interesting. How to some of the other big towns around us handle this with volunteers. Mahwah, Paramus , fair lawn .

    Well !
    ??

  3. To the posters above…..

When can we expect to see your application to become a Volunteer?

  4. To all the ftards….. We can’t even fully staff a volunteer ambulance what makes you think we would ever have a sufficient number of volunteer foundation savers?
Having a paid FD with fast response times is the major Reason I live in Ridgewood. Not river rate schools.
I’m at my vacation home and we depend on volunteers here and damm nearly every fire resulted in nothing left but a foundation

  5. Like Bagelicious!

  6. I figured my post would ellicit some dope comment about bagelicious. If you dont report a fire until a 100+ year old tinderbox is fully engulfed, the end result is a poorly built structure thats a pile of rubble. Ive lived here since 1969 and thats the first time i ever saw something like that. thankfully they stopped it from spreading to the adjoining structures. Its not the job of the FD whether pro or volunteer to ”monitor” a structure. they simply RESPOND when they are called. so if your a cheap shit and dont have a fully monitored alarm on your house or store, if there is a fire it wont get reported till someone sees the flames. if this building had commercial tenants that were closed who knows how long before a fired became apparent. has a cause ever been established???

  7. Like Bagelicious!

Yea, like it makes sense to lose the life of Firefighters to try and save a 100+ year old building. Stop being stupid and know what your taking about before making dumb comments.

  8. Volunteer is the way to go!

  9. Volunteer is the way to go!

Said by someone who has never been a Volunteer Firefighter in his life.

  10. Excuse after excuse after excuse! Weak. Volunteer would be a pragmatic way to reduce expenses.

Why do we need to be one of only four municipalities out of 72 in Bergen County with paid professional firefighters?

We could start by making Engine 31 at 311 West Glen Ave all volunteer, and see how that works before the transition to all volunteer for the Village.

    Pragmatism!

  11. Why do we need to be one of only four municipalities out of 72 in Bergen County with paid professional firefighters?

Because residents, like you, don’t want to volunteer to become volunteer firefighters. We all know you expect some one else to volunteer so you can save a few dollars on your property taxes. The answer to your question just look in the mirror. Your why we need professional firefighters.

  12. What’s amazing is that we have the time to send a fire truck to South Broad Street to work on a building that has loose tiles on the roof or bricks. Call Anna contractor next time. Who the hell is authorizing this. Are we charging the landlords for this. We demand to know what the hell is going on now. You’re telling me the flyable and has that much time somethings wrong. It’s amazing they have time for that but when it comes to shoveling snow around fire hydrants they do not have the time very interesting, this doesn’t look good not a times like this, when you’re talking about A.k.a. Furloughing jobs. Think about it

  13. 94% of all municipalities in Bergen County get by with volunteer fire departments. Paying for professionals is an expensive luxury, not a state mandate. And the outcomes aren’t different anyway.

With Valley’s emergency room moving to Paramus, the need for a paid fire department to reset the fire alarms when they get pulled disappears.

Hopefully the new Village Council looks for obvious cost savings. Whoever suggested turning Engine 31 on West Glen to “all volunteer” above makes a good suggestion. Try it and see what happens; you might be surprised how many volunteers you get.

  14. To the poster above who said we couldn’t get volunteers. Lost if Villagers have lost their jobs, why wouldn’t they volunteer now. Maybe pull your head out of your derrière?

  15. Until Susan Knudsen is gone, they won’t agree to all volunteer, maybe only Engine 31 up in Willard becoming volunteer. She worked so hard to get her sons hired by the RPD and RFD, no doubt she’ll fight just as hard to keep it paid. Self-dealing is in her nature.

  16. If you want to save money on taxes, don’t push us empty nesters out of town.
We LIKE the paid FD and its quick response.
    We LIKE curbside garbage pickup.
INCREASE class sizes and lay off some teachers.
If your kid is too dumb to keep up with the class, hire your own tutor.
Dont forget, we SUBSIDIZE the schools. Chase us away and the buyers of our homes will have children in schools, thus INCREASING your taxes. (even if your only a tempory 10 year resident before you move back to NYC)

  17. Why do retired cops and firefighters leave Ridgewood for the Carolinas and Florida? They earn their pension checks from NJ but don’t spend money or pay taxes here. Just sayin’ their checks should be taxed at the source.

  18. To the commenter who said

“Why do retired cops and firefighters leave Ridgewood for the Carolinas and Florida? They earn their pension checks from NJ but don’t spend money or pay taxes here. Just sayin’ their checks should be taxed at the source.”

As long as you apply the same standard to your Social Security payments and all of your retirement accounts I can agree with that !

  19. Social security is a state run program like your pension plan?

    1. no its a federal ponzi scheme

  20. Whoever just complained about social security is a selfish moron. Police and fire retire early at an average age of 52 after 25 years.

They get half of their unused sick leave paid out at their final rate of salary when they retire, not at their rate of pay when the leave was awarded. These payments can run well over $100,000 by age 52.

They also draw full defined benefit pensions right away from age 52, not 65. If they live another 30+ years, they’ll earn a pension for many more years than they served.

    Plus subsidized “platinum” healthcare.

A private sector worker can’t draw social security until age 67 or later. Which means they have to work for at least 15 more years than a policeman and firefighter. And they have to pay large premiums for equivalent healthcare.

    Stop being so greedy.

  21. If you were smart enough to invest 15% of your salary for 25 years into a properly invested retirement accounts, such as a 401K, you could retire at age 50 or even earlier like I did. So stop bitching about government employees. They earned every dollar and benefit they receive. The greedy one here sounds like you.

  22. To the person who said.

They get half of their unused sick leave paid out at their final rate of salary when they retire, not at their rate of pay when the leave was awarded. These payments can run well over $100,000 by age 52.

Name me just one village employee who received well over $100,000 when they retired. Just one, bet you can not……

  23. Yup, just as I thought you can’t name even one person who received over $100,000 in sick leave pay when they retired, because that is a lie!

  24. OPRA filed.

  25. I cant wait. Hoped you like your crow with no salt.

  26. Well isn’t this interesting. One commenter claimed that Village Employees were receiving unused sick leave payments well over $100,000.00.

Another commenter challenged the commenter to name just one person who received a $100,000.00 payout!

Well the commenter making the $100,000.00 payout claim didn’t reply with a name. They obviously didn’t know anyone who received that $100,000.00 payout. So they had to file a OPRA request with the Village. It appears that person was lying and hoping no one would challenge his claim. And now in a move of desperation that person filed an OPRA request obviously hoping to find someone, anyone who received a $100,000.00 sick leave payout.

    I’ll be following this …….

  27. Thanks Jim.

  28. The Midland Park Volunteer FD is great! Volunteer all the way, why do we need to be one of only four municipalities in Bergen County (out of 72) to have a paid fire department?

  29. why do we need to be one of only four municipalities in Bergen County (out of 72) to have a paid fire department?

Ridgewood is a paid department because cowards like you refuse to volunteer. Stop leading from behind and grow a spine and become a volunteer.

  30. Would love to volunteer. Where can I apply?

  31. Seven Village retirees since 2018 got an average of $100,000 payouts for unused sick leave. It’s right there on page 20 of the 2019 Ridgewood Budget Presentation… https://www.ridgewoodnj.net/village-info/2483-2019-village-budget-presentation

  32. James, please post the volunteer information for Ridgewood Fire and let’s move from paid professionals to all volunteer. We can start with Engine 31 in Willard and go from there.

  33. It doesn’t say anything about sick leave. On page 20. That dollar amount on page 20 can be for accrued unused vacation time that was not used prior to retirement, overtime which was not paid for during their final weeks of employment, unused sick days or compensation time earned and banked under the Federal labor Standards Act.

    https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/flsa

    Which states

“Compensatory Time: Under certain prescribed conditions, employees of State or local government agencies may receive compensatory time off, at a rate of not less than one and one-half hours for each overtime hour worked, instead of cash overtime pay. Law enforcement, fire protection, and emergency response personnel and employees engaged in seasonal activities may accrue up to 480 hours of comp time; all other state and local government employees may accrue up to 240 hours. An employee must be permitted to use compensatory time on the date requested unless doing so would “unduly disrupt” the operations of the agency.”

    https://www.dol.gov/sites/dolgov/files/WHD/legacy/files/whdfs7.pdf.

So once again you lied and you have no idea what the hell you are talking about. Stop lying 🤥 and posting about things you know nothing about.

  34. The person quoting the Federal FLSA law is correct. Most of the Village employees elect to bank overtime hours instead of getting paid for them during their career. When they retire they are, by LAW, paid for what they have banked. So if someone had 480 hours of compensation time saved that would be equal to 60 days. That is the majority of the costs contained on page 20 in the Village 2019 Ridgewood Budget Presentation. The person calling that only sick leave payouts is lying.

  35. The last two posts are from the same poster. Classic Jim Fatface ploy that he used back in the days of his fake blog “Andrew & Sue” until he was outed by PJ.

Classic bully, thug and disgraced former firefighter who was found to have sent a threatening letter to former FF Kevin Reilly, who won a $500,000 judgement against the Village in a whistleblower lawsuit that named Jim as a key perpetrator of the bullying & harassment.

He now trolls this blog from his basement in Florida living off of his Village pension which is less than his arch nemesis Keith Killion’s pension!

    https://theridgewoodblog.net/andrew-susan-exposed-admit-they-are-james-bombace-and-support-paul-aronsohn/

  36. The last post is from Charlie Slime, X disgraced Mayor Aronshon’s right hand man and one of the members of the X Mayors discredited Financial Advisory Committee. He doesn’t live in Ridgewood any more, he’s not even living in the United States. Why, because his reputation is so bad no one would hire him here, so now he’s working in the United Arab Emirates.

He a proven pathological liar, a bully and a hate monger. He is so upset at what Village Employees earn he is on a one man vendetta to smear and lie to make Village Employees look like they don’t deserve their pay and benefits.

Notice how he completely ignores the facts about the Federal FLSA Laws. He hates being proved wrong and when he is he ignores the facts and attacks the person or persons presenting the facts. By the way you will NEVER see him post any facts to back up his wild and false claims. Even the members of the Financial Advisory committee said he was a nut job. And he proves that with each and every post he makes.

  37. I’m still waiting for you to name just one Village Employee who received over $100,00.00 in unused sick leave Charlie Slime. Why haven’t you been able to give us a name? Is it because you have been caught in a big fat lie? Ha Ha Ha.

  38. Hey Charlie, How many years were you a Ridgewood Volunteer Firefighter? What, none, is that right…hmmmm let me see if I understand this correctly. You want the Ridgewood Fire Department to be a Volunteer Department but your not willing to become a Volunteer firefighter yourself. Have I got that right Charlie Kime?

  39. Engine 31 should be 100% volunteer. Everyone (except the Deputy Mayor and retired firefighters) agrees. Staffing it 24/7 with paid professional firefighters is a scam and outright taxpayer theft. Enough already.

  40. Engine 31 should be 100% volunteer. Everyone (except the Deputy Mayor and retired firefighters) agrees.

Great idea Charlie Kime, Now can you Stop leading from behind and show some real leadership, you should be filling out your application to become a Volunteer Firefighter so you can lead the change of Engine #31 to be 100% Volunteer.

I will not hold my breath waiting for that though, Firefighting is for everyone else, not you. You are way above that menial type of labor, you just want to save a few dollars on your property taxes, isn’t that right Charlie.

  41. Engine 31 should be 100% volunteer. Everyone (except the Deputy Mayor and retired firefighters) agrees.

Oh really, whos everyone, you and your family? How about a list of those people you refer to as everyone.

  42. Who is Charlie?

  43. What exactly is your argument against making Engine 31 at 311 West Glen in Willard 100% volunteer instead of having paid professional firefighters there 24/7?

That no one will volunteer? This seems redundant as there are already enough volunteers to staff it!

Or are you just towing the union line as a self-dealing lackey?

  44. Jimbo better be careful posting from his basement in his guinea tee… he has a long history of documented bullying & harassment (see https://theridgewoodblog.net/key-claims-of-plaintiff-kevin-reilly-taken-verbatim-from-superior-courts-opinion-document/ and https://theridgewoodblog.net/ridgewood-firefighter-whistle-blower-kevin-reilly-awarded-3-5-million/ ) and read Judge and https://bit.ly/y40FsE and Superior Court Judge Menelaos W. Toskos’s comprehensive opinion of May 2, 2012.

  45. Oh my should I be afraid now……..Ha Ha Ha you are a paper tiger Charlie. You are the one who should be careful.

  46. Hey Charlie Kime,

I just checked with the Fire Department, they haven’t received your application to become a Volunteer Firefighter yet. Why is that?
