Garbage Truck Fire in Ridgewood Quickly Contained by Firefighters

Ridgewood NJ, a routine garbage collection turned hazardous early Wednesday morning when smoke began billowing from the rear of a Village of Ridgewood sanitation truck. In response, the driver dumped the truck’s contents into an empty parking lot to prevent further danger.

Village of Ridgewood : “Shortly after 7:30 am today, a Village sanitation truck caught fire. The crew assigned to the truck was able to park the vehicle in the Graydon Pool parking lot where the fire was extinguished with the assistance of the Ridgewood Fire Department. There were no injuries. The incident is under investigation by our Sanitation Division and the RFD. We are grateful for the quick thinking of our employees who worked to keep themselves and those passing by safe.”

Firefighters Act Fast to Extinguish Blaze

Ridgewood Fire Department (FD) crews arrived swiftly, extinguishing multiple fires that ignited within the dumped debris. A fire prevention officer was also on scene to investigate the possible cause of the rubbish fire.

Meanwhile, Ridgewood Police Department (PD) patrol officers managed traffic control, ensuring safety for first responders and residents.

Cleanup Efforts and Aftermath

  • The water-soaked debris was collected and packed into a backup sanitation truck.
  • Fortunately, no damage was reported to the original garbage truck.
  • Officials are investigating what may have triggered the fire.
