Glen Rock NJ, Glen Rock Police successfully arrested a suspect involved in an elaborate “roof repair” scam. In another recent incident, a potential victim managed to avoid falling for a similar scheme.

The Arrest

In July 2023, a Glen Rock resident reported that two individuals, posing as roofing contractors, knocked on their door unsolicited. Claiming that the resident’s roof needed repair, they offered to provide an estimate.

“They provided a business flyer and the resident agreed to the estimate,” police stated. “Shortly thereafter, the resident heard banging on their roof and discovered that the men had climbed up and created a hole in it.”

When confronted, the faux roofers claimed they needed to fetch wood and shingles to fix the damage but never returned. The damage was estimated to be $2,000.

Thanks to surveillance footage provided by the victim, Glen Rock detectives, in collaboration with the Vernon Police Department and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, arrested 42-year-old Jimmy Jones from Queens this month. Det. Sgt. Jim Calaski and Det. Lucas Doney took Jones into custody at Vernon police headquarters and charged him with third-degree criminal mischief. He was subsequently taken to the Bergen County Jail, awaiting a court appearance in Hackensack.

A Close Call

In a more recent incident on May 22, 2024, another Glen Rock resident reported receiving a suspicious phone call. The caller, claiming to be from “Home Improvement Services,” alleged that the resident’s roof needed repair and offered to provide an estimate. However, the caller also inquired if the resident lived alone.

“Recognizing that this was a potential scam, the resident notified the police,” officials reported.

Thankfully, this scam attempt was unsuccessful.
