Newark NJ, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today announced its commercial airports continued seeing a surge in passenger volume, recording the busiest first four months of the year ever. The milestone was capped by the second-busiest busiest April of all time. Likewise, the Port of New York and New Jersey recorded its fifth consecutive month of year-over-year growth, surpassing 700,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in April. Traffic volume at bridges and tunnels maintained a robust pace, while passenger volume at the PATH commuter rail continued to grow above 2023 levels, holding steady at roughly 70 percent or pre-COVID ridership.

Airports:

Air travel at the Port Authority’s commercial airports through the first four months of 2024 outpaced the same period in 2023. These results make the first four months of 2024 the busiest start to a year on record for the region’s airports. So far this year, the region’s commercial airports have welcomed 44.6 million passengers. This was an increase of nearly 400,000 passengers from the first four months of 2023.

Approximately 12.2 million passengers used the Port Authority’s commercial airports in April 2024. This April’s total was the second highest all-time for the month of April, down about 33,000 from the record high in April 2023. International travel continued its upswing, jumping 6 percent from April 2023 to a new April record of over 4.2 million passengers. London, Paris, Toronto and Rome were among the month’s most popular foreign destinations.

April’s passenger volume surpassed March levels by about 83,000 passengers as spring travel demand grew.

Port of New York and New Jersey:

April marked the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year growth for the Port of New York and New Jersey. During the month, the seaport moved 709,473 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). The total was a 9 percent increase from April 2023 and a 17 percent increase from April 2019. The growth was partially attributable to additional cargo diverted to the region following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore and the subsequent closure of the Port of Baltimore.

The Port of New York and New Jersey maintained its status as the second-busiest port in the nation for loaded imports and exports, handling 471,643 loaded TEUs in April 2024.

Through the first four months of 2024, the seaport is outperforming cargo volume from the same period in pre-pandemic 2019 by 13 percent, and the same period in 2023 by 11 percent.

Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals:

Just over 10 million eastbound vehicles used the Port Authority’s six vehicular crossings in April 2024. This marked a continuation of the strong activity seen in both April 2019 and April 2023. Average daily traffic volume increased by about 8,000 vehicles from March to April.

Year-to-date, traffic volumes are on par with robust volumes seen during the same period in 2023 and 2019.

PATH Commuter Rail:

Total passengers on the PATH commuter rail in April 2024 jumped 18 percent compared to April 2023. During the month, the system welcomed over 4.7 million passengers, compared to about 4 million in April 2023. The April 2024 figure was 5 percent above March 2024 levels. It was 67 percent of April 2019’s total ridership.

Average weekday ridership also continued its upward trajectory, at 182,180 in April 2024. This was a 13 percent jump from April 2023 and a 3 percent jump from March 2024.

Sunday ridership outpaced pre-COVID levels for the second straight month. This April’s 80,190 Sunday riders also surpassed April 2023 levels by 20 percent and March 2024 levels by 11 percent.
