Hackensack NJ, In a heartfelt and emotional decision, Hackensack Board of Education President Scott James-Vickery announced his resignation Wednesday, citing years of relentless bullying and harassment by teachers union surrogates targeting him and his family. The announcement came during the board’s final meeting of the year, marking an end to James-Vickery’s tenure that began in 2019.
A Difficult Decision to Step Down
During what he called the “president’s report,” James-Vickery delivered a nearly hour-long presentation detailing the abuse he and his family have endured. The harassment included mocking social media posts, threatening flyers, and cruel messages sent to his children at school.
One particularly alarming incident involved a flyer with his face in a gun’s crosshairs and the chilling message, “You will be taken out by vote or by force.” Other threats included a letter sent to his home listing personal information about his children, such as their names, birthdays, and Social Security numbers.
“The harassment crossed the line when it became personal about my children,” James-Vickery said. “After that text chain, my soul was not settled.”
Disturbing Text Messages Spark Final Decision
James-Vickery’s decision to resign was solidified after a group of teachers allegedly mocked him in a private text exchange while he was giving a presentation earlier this year. Screenshots of the texts, later sent to him, included cruel comments about his late nephew and his family.
One text reportedly read, “I guess Vickery thinks flashing up a picture of his ugly kids will get this town to like him. Poor bumpkin — so stupid.”
These deeply personal attacks, combined with the ongoing harassment, made it impossible for James-Vickery to continue in his role.
Reflecting on His Tenure
James-Vickery served as a school board member since 2019 and had been president since 2022. In his resignation speech, he expressed concern about the changing dynamics of the school board and meetings that often felt more like teachers’ union gatherings than forums for community input.
“I have served this community with everything I have in me,” he said. “But I will not let this small group torture my children any longer.”
James-Vickery said he was concerned with the shifting dynamics of the school board, and board meetings that at times felt more like teachers’ “union meetings.”
“We very rarely have parents and concerned citizens who get up here and talk. We have the same cast of characters every month,” he said Wednesday. “I have served this community with everything I have in me and I will not let this small group torture my children any longer. So I formally resign as of now and I’ll turn my attention to my children who deserve me.”
What’s Next for James-Vickery?
Following his resignation, James-Vickery plans to focus on his family, including his six children, some of whom have special needs. “They deserve me,” he said.
His departure marks a significant shift for the Board of Education, which also bid farewell to members Lancelot Powell and Marlene Somerville, who lost reelection bids.

public school is just about teachers making lots of money
I don’t think anyone sets out in life to make a minimum amount of money, or just a so-so amount of money. If you’re not the Unabomber I think you’d prefer lots over less. Besides, anyone who legitimately loved teaching for the sake of teaching, unless they had an iron will or were totally oblivious, would be run out of the profession sooner rather than later or end up becoming what they hate.
NJEA rule the roost
All Academic and bad behavior problems would be corrected if there were camaras inside classrooms or or Educative – Auditors acting like Substitute- paraprofessionals (like secret detectives) to check which classrooms are being successful and in which areas teachers and students need to improve plus Vice-principals checking more too, not just saying hi from classroom to classroom.
