Hasbrouck Heights NJ, In a recent development, a woman accused of stabbing her co-worker in the chest at a restaurant in Hasbrouck Heights was released from jail under strict conditions. The incident, which took place at The Heights Bar and Grill, has raised questions about the circumstances leading up to the altercation.
The Accused: Juana Galvez Genaro
Juana Galvez Genaro, a 23-year-old resident of Passaic, faced Judge Susan Steele during a detention hearing in Bergen County. Galvez Genaro’s attorney, Aaron Miller, argued that her actions were not without provocation. According to Miller, her larger male co-worker had been “flirting” or “making advances” toward her prior to the incident.
Miller pointed to surveillance footage that allegedly shows the male co-worker making a “grinding motion” toward Galvez Genaro’s back just before the stabbing occurred. “It is unclear if he is making contact with her,” Miller stated, emphasizing that either or both individuals may have been under the influence of alcohol, as indicated by a police report.
The Incident and Location
The stabbing took place at 163 Boulevard, the address of Heights Bar and Grill, an Irish-style American pub in Hasbrouck Heights. Prosecutors, led by Assistant Prosecutor David Malfitano, argued that Galvez Genaro’s actions were dangerous, highlighting surveillance footage that showed her using a large knife to stab the male co-worker in the chest.
Malfitano also noted that Galvez Genaro has limited ties to the local community. She is not a U.S. resident and has two older children living in Mexico with her parents. Additionally, she has a 10-month-old child in the U.S., for whom she receives caregiving assistance from her aunt, with whom she resides.
Defense and Judge’s Ruling
Miller contended that Galvez Genaro came to the United States in 2023 to support her family in Mexico, stressing that her youngest child, who is still breastfeeding, represents significant ties to the community.
Judge Steele, after considering the arguments, appeared to acknowledge that Galvez Genaro was “somewhat provoked” by the victim. She ordered Galvez Genaro’s release under strict monitoring conditions, including mandatory attendance at all court hearings, immediate notification to pretrial services of any changes in contact information, and a prohibition against any contact with the victim or anyone at the restaurant.
Furthermore, Galvez Genaro must check in weekly by phone with pretrial services, cannot possess any weapons, and must refrain from consuming alcohol or drugs.
Galvez Genaro’s next court date has yet to be scheduled. As the case continues to unfold, the circumstances surrounding the incident will likely remain under scrutiny.
