Timeline of Events

The incident began around 5:30 a.m. when a call initially reported a street argument. Upon arrival, responders found the house ablaze, with smoke pouring from the second floor and a “well-involved” fire in the basement.

Key Rescues:

  • One resident had already leaped from a second-floor window to escape the flames.
  • Firefighters discovered another victim unconscious on the second floor. CPR was performed immediately, and the individual was transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition.
  • Two more residents were rescued from the roof using tactical and aerial ladders.

Despite these efforts, officials later confirmed the tragic death of 27-year-old Ahmed Abidar from injuries sustained in the fire.

The Aftermath

By 9 a.m., the fire was under control, but the home was declared uninhabitable by the Lyndhurst Building Department. Displaced residents from two families are now receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

Fortunately, no firefighters were injured during the operation.

Concerns Raised

Lyndhurst Fire Chief Paul Haggerty noted that no working smoke detectors were found inside the home. This tragic oversight serves as a reminder of the importance of functioning fire alarms to save lives during emergencies.

Ongoing Investigation

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Squad and the Lyndhurst Fire Prevention Office are investigating the cause of the fire. While officials do not currently believe the fire to be suspicious, a full report is pending.
