How to Be a Successful YouTuber? Success Ahead!

I will be the first to admit: when I first started posting videos on YouTube, I had no idea what I was doing. I would wake up with a whim of the day and record whatever was on my mind, hit the “upload” button, and hope for the best. Spoiler alert: I didn’t get the best. In fact, I barely got any views at all, then I asked myself how to be a successful YouTuber?

Through trial and error, after hundreds of flops-and-some-quite-pretty-damning pretty embarrassing ones, I worked out a strategy that not only helped me grow a terrific audience but also made content creation much more fun. Below, I’m sharing my own personal roadmap-all the juicy real-life stories-so you can build a winning channel without making some of the mistakes I did.

I’m normally a chatty person, and my sense of humor is rather sarcastic but light-hearted. I used to think viewers wouldn’t mind my so-so smartphone videos. Turns out, they do. Or at least, they prefer better audio and visuals. You don’t have to be a Hollywood cinematographer, but investing in a decent camera, microphone, and lighting kit can take your channel to the next level.

I once recorded an entire video without realizing that my mic was not even plugged in. Here I was, being super enthusiastic about something, and the camera shows me just in total silence. I shudder at the very thought to this day.

  1. Camera: Your smartphone is okay if it’s good quality, but a dedicated camera is always better.

Collaborations can really get your channel going. My first collab was with another tech YouTuber who has roughly the same audience size as me. We each showcased our favorite tools in a “Tool Swap” video, and we both gained new viewers who were already interested in our niche.

  • Find Peers: Look for peers who have a similar vibe or audience size.
  • Plan It Out: Make sure you both are clear on the goals and format of the collab.
  • Network, Network, Network: Go to meetups or conferences; you never know who you’ll meet.

Staying Creative and Avoiding Burnout

Let’s be honest, content creation can be exhausting. I feel there was at least one day where I just wanted to up and quit and move to the cabin, camera and editing software-free. However, I have a few secrets that keep me going: short breaks, researching new trends, and watching completely unrelated content (cooking or travel vlogs, for example).

I keep a notebook (or sometimes just the Notes app on my phone) to jot down video ideas whenever they pop into my head—on a walk, in the shower, or even late at night. That way, I’m never stuck staring at a blank screen wondering what to film next.

Final Thoughts

I didn’t wake up one night with a booming YouTube channel. In fact, there were many embarrassing flops and “oh-my-gosh-did-I-really-do-that” moments along the way to learn how to be a successful YouTuber. However, every cringe-worthy mishap has taught me something invaluable about my audience, my workflow, and even myself.

My narrative should teach you to be human. Let your flaws show, accept feedback, and treat your audience as friends and supporters. Finally, a successful YouTube channel is about establishing a community that develops with you, not just numbers.
