Is Pay to play (literally) alive and well in Ridgewood?

Ridgewood NJ, when Lauren Cuneo, a Board Member of the Maroons Soccer Club for the past 7 years, spoke during Wednesday night’s Village Council meeting in support of constructing a larger, artificial turf playing field with permanent lighting at Schedler Park, she publicly revealed what many Ridgewood taxpayers suspect will ultimately be the primary deciding factor in Village Council’s decision making process regarding Schedler.

What Ms. Cueno said in public was that IF the Village Council authorizes the installation of artificial turf and permanent field lighting at Schedler, the Maroons Soccer Club would provide “monetary support.” Hmm. So, we guess that no turf and/or no lights would mean no money from the Maroons? Hmm. A strong arm technique of sorts? Hmm.

The staff of The Ridgewood Blog needs to say this about all of that – Certainly this would appear to be a classic case of “pay to play” (literally). And, once again we will note that in Ridgewood money always talks, and when it does, nobody ever walks.

Always be careful who you vote for folks.

  1. So true, but nonetheless positively disgusting.

  2. RECALL WINOGRAD NOW!

  3. Even more alarming than Lauren Cuneo’s remarks were those made by Jennifer Devlin during the same meeting. Ms. Devlin remains upset that a proposal to construct a concrete lined water park as a Graydon Pool replacement was rejected, and that plans to build a new RHS were scrapped (we don’t even remember such a proposal). She blamed “naysayers” for both failed proposals, and blamed these same “naysayers” for trashing a proposal to expand the Ridgewood Public Library. As we recall it, the “Pool Project” died on the drawing board because it was too much (a climate controlled dome over the entire water park) and too expensive. The library project died because their application to the State of NJ for funding was rejected. And as previously stated, we do not even remember a plan to build a new Ridgewood High School. The next time she goes to the microphone, we hope Ms. Devlin gets her facts straight.

    2. Can’t wait to see the plans for the new RHS. Maybe it will be relocated to the former Valley Site off Linwood

      1. There are no such plans and most likely never will be.

        1. U think

          1. Replacing it with something new would be like replacing the White House. Never gonna happen. It lived on after that major fire in the 60’s or early 70’s; it will continue to survive for eternity.

  4. Has anyone checked to see how many of these sports people “donated” to Siobhan Winograd’s campaign?

    1. Don Delzio contributed $500 each to Winograd and Weitz.

  5. Bill Bond, representing the RBSA, literally listed how much he’s currently paying to pay. His final comment was “we put our money where our mouth is”

    1. That is par for the course

  6. Ah…not again…return of the 2016 $100k check for 90 foot field on the Schedler property. That reminds me, what was the outcome of the alleged RBSA money corruption?https://youtu.be/swvQNREIOLY

  7. RW is fast becoming a shithole…

  8. Sorry to disagree here, but at last Ridgewood is looking forward not being pulled backwards! Change can be good if well managed.

  9. I believe when they wanted to reconstruct a brand new pool it was in the price ran around 15 million

  10. truth be told even by NJ standards Ridgewood has the dumbest voters ………..

  11. the town is for sale , let the kickbacks and payoffs reign

  12. Do you know what most people don’t give two shits what’s going on in town. Once their kid is out of school, they’re moving out of town. Who can afford to retire in Ridgewood. Can you imagine another few years. They need to sell the water department, they need to let Bergen county take over 911, And I Bergen County take over the pollution plant,

  13. funny..location is on the other side of town, far away from those complaining. if schedler was located in their neighborhood, those few would be the first to fight against it.

  14. Will there be concession stands selling burgers, snacks, and sodas?

  15. The taste of the water is disgusting. I’m at my cousins home on Lynn st, and it’s tasty as nasty.

    1. Yes we are all drinking poison but lets make sure we focus our time and $$ on a large turf soccer field because Glen Rick has one.

  16. Wait, I’m confused. If the town moves forward with a recreation improvement project, then the organizations who will take advantage of that project will help fund it? And that’s a bad thing??

    1. The town has an approved plan the can be completed by summer but the new council wants to blow it up and hand picked speakers from each org who want to take the donations received by Ridgewood residents and small businesses to help push it over the line…for self interest alone.

    2. There should be no expectation that donating money gets you a say so in project design. Those who gave to the library fund did not get input on architectural design.

  17. No different than the former Mayor organizing her team to come out and promote her agenda for Schedler. It’s politics kids. Wake up and small the lousy coffee!

    1. Except that the people objecting a Schedler sportsplex actually live in the neighborhood and will be impacted by whatever happened there. Nothing to so with the former mayor. The folks advocating for a giant sportsplex at Schedler don’t live in the neighborhood and don’t give a rats ass about the neighbors. “It’s all about the kids” (LOL).

  18. Paying for the installation is one thing but maintenance and replacement after turfs useful life becomes the town ( TAXPAYER) responsibility. Its the gift that keeps on giving.

    1. kickbacks are larger with installation, not as big on maintenance

  19. most of the people who promoted the RHS turf field moved out of town as soon as it was installed

    1. Yes. Frank Giordano and Jack Carroll both moved out.

  20. Dear That Ridgewood Mom,
Key words “well managed.” Siobhan and Vagianos marching to the orders of 9 people, representing a profit company, is far from diligence and smells like CORRUPTION. Just ask the thousands of people who diligently followed procedure, spent years on the current plan, who were just sold down the river by nefarious forces.

  21. To the commenter,

“Wait, I’m confused. If the town moves forward with a recreation improvement project, then the organizations who will take advantage of that project will help fund it? And that’s a bad thing??”

Not just bad, it’s corrupt and unethical.

  23. This is EXACTLY the wrong thing to build at Schedler. Children of any age should not be playing any field sport between Rt. 17 and West Saddle Road where folks come off Rt. 17 at 30-40 MPH. This is just the truth, and some adult needs to think this through. The land should never have been purchased in the first place by the Village. It would have been better utilized as a single family home redevelopment, or Rt. 17 based retail, both adding significantly to the tax base.

  24. The council needs to worry more about how they are going to handle the problem with keeping the fleet running in the village.
And village departments being short on staff. Why is this happening. The police and fire department are fully responsible on staffing.
More bull shit going on from management.

  25. Hey mayor and council the leaf dump in Ridgewood stinks, they can smell it in Hawthorne Whycoff Midlandpark what is going on.

  26. Yes, what is going on we having had that smell in a long time. We took a ride yesterday. The place is a mess. Years ago it was always kept neat and clean without any problems from oder like this past year.

  27. more kickbacks for the Village Council

  28. The village of Ridgewood is toxic to work for . I know people that worked at the water department for two years and left. They told us a few nasty stories.
