Franklin Lakes NJ, the Lorrimer Sanctuary received a $1 million gift from the Winifred M. and George P. Pitkin Foundation to support a major renovation at the facility. The gift will help finance a $3 million new educational center and is among the largest in New Jersey Audubon’s history.

The new educational center at Lorrimer will include new indoor and outdoor education space and a multi-use space and reception area that will provide capacity for increased programming and community engagement. Officials hope the additions will double the current 5,000 visitors a year to the 14-acre preserve.

The New Jersey Audubon is an environmental education and conservation advocacy organization. Founded in 1897, it is one of New Jersey’s largest environmental organizations, with several staffed nature centers, dozens of unstaffed sanctuaries, and thousands of members throughout New Jersey and beyond. New Jersey Audubon is an independent organization and is not affiliated with the National Audubon Society.
