Man Taken Into Custody at Scene of Elmwood Park Homicide

Elmwood Park NJ, Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies responded on Tuesday morning, 10/19 to assist Elmwood Park Police at a homicide scene on Beechwood Avenue. One (1) person was taken into custody by the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team and turned over to detectives of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit. The suspect had barricaded himself in a bathroom after allegedly killing a family member with an ax. He was convinced to surrender voluntarily by crisis negotiators at the scene. No injuries to law enforcement officers were reported in connection with the incident.

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announces the following information:

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Elmwood Park Police Department are investigating a death that occurred at 24 Beechwood Avenue, Elmwood Park, on Tuesday, October 19, 2021. At approximately 9:30 a.m., the Elmwood Park Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting an incident at 24 Beechwood Avenue. Responding officers were told there was an injured individual inside the residence and that another individual had barricaded himself inside the home. The Bergen County Regional SWAT Team was called, and after a short period of time, a male occupant of the residence surrendered to police and was taken into custody. Officers entered the home and discovered a deceased elderly male victim, identified as Ronald Vicari.

An investigation is being conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Elmwood Park Police Department under the direction of Chief Michael Foligno. No other information is available at this time.
