Midland Park NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced additional information in an investigation into a house fire that occurred on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at 222 Franklin Avenue in Midland Park, NJ. An investigation is being conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Chief Jason Love and the Midland Park Police Department under the direction of Chief Michael Powderley.

On Thursday, February 2, 2023, at approximately 6:32 p.m., the Midland Park Police Department received a report of a fire at 222 Franklin Avenue. Police officers responded along with the Midland Park Fire Department and neighboring fire departments. During fire suppression, first responders located 16-year-old Alexander Lopez-Pena deceased on the first floor of the residence. Additional occupants of the home were transported to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ for treatment of unspecified injuries.
An investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Midland Park Police Department determined that the fatality was not the result of criminal activity. Prosecutor Musella would like to thank the Midland Park Police Department, the Midland Park Fire Department, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, and the American Red Cross for their assistance in this investigation.
