Montclair Restaurant Gets Called Racist From All Sides and a Ticket from the Murphy Administration

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Montclair NJ, think of the irony , according to State Police Superintendent Col. Patrick Callahan, in Montclair, police responded to Cuban Pete’s restaurant for a report of indoor dining, and that was found to be the case. The owner was charged with the violation of the EO . The irony comes in two facets  , first Cuban Pete’s restaurant in Montclair was heavily criticized  for hosting a ,”Black Lives Matter” banner in the window of the restaurant.

Michael Shapiro  ,”ATTENTION TO ALL : I called this restaurant 7-14 @ 7:45 pm & ask them what about All Lives Matter? I told them everyone’s life is important to me ,No discrimination, and they said I was a white racist , My family is half black ,and they told me they would not serve any white racist people, I called them back And they kept on hanging up the phone on me, they need to be exposed located @ 428 Bloomfield ave. Montclair, N.J.07042 973-746-1100 Let your voices be heard ”

Later Cuban Pete’s restaurant was attacked for treating African American customers poorly, In a Facebook post the restaurant issued an apology  ,”This is a message to all my fellow followers and customers:
After reading all the backlash and comments we’ve been receiving, we are deeply saddened by all the false accusations about racism. Of all the 15 years that Cuban Pete’s have been open, we have always supported and contributed towards the African American community. We judge no one on the base of age, color, sexual identity, or religion. I would like to address the incident that occurred yesterday. Being that we’re only taking online orders due to COVID-19, a customer was discouraged that they had to place it online. After endlessly explaining and going back and forth with the customer, Dominick hung up the phone. After numerous phone calls from the same customer, he picks up the phone to explain how he’s busy and if he doesn’t wanna spend his money here that’s fine. The customer continues to say, “you don’t want our black dollars?” Dominick replies, “I’m busy right now, it doesn’t really matter who’s dollar.” It was a miscommunication that’s being blown out of proportion. Everybody that knows us, knows our hearts and how we always put our customers first. Especially during this time we live in right now, our community has and will always have our support — Cuban Pete’s Restaurant “

  3. One can’t win an oppression game. There’s always gonna be someone more oppressed or more upset. Focus on cooking good food and you’ll do well.

  5. Racist! Told me kitchen was closed. Five minutes later took another “ latino” couple. When I went back in he just smirked and ignored me. BTW I am white. So I guess it just depends who you are. Just an FYI. And it’s too bad bc I liked the food prior, but won’t go back!

  6. I have had dinner at Cuban Pete’s several times, but the last time it was horrible. The Sangria room smelled of the old dirty mop. Once we requested to be moved there was old moldy food in the grooves of the table. Seemed as though it had not been cleaned thoroughly from the night before cause they had just opened. Me and my party of 10 elected not to celebrate and left. Although it serves some great food in the past, they have truly fallen off in some areas. I would not call them racist but they prioritize certain clients.

  8. Every life matter. BLM. Burn loot and murder. Seems like the cause has taken a turn for some other agenda.

  9. These signs are absolutely nothing more than messages to the rioters to not smash their business up.

    1. whats “fake” about it

  11. Yes all lives matter, definitely. But black lives are the ones who are beaten and killed indiscriminately.

  12. It’s incredible the amount of racist comments stating “All Lives Matter” in this site come from people who are anonymous. All lives can’t matter until black lives matter. #nojusticenopeace

  13. I have been going to Cuban Pete’s for decades, as well as Dominic’s previously owned restaurants. I have always seen him be kind & hospitable to everyone in his restaurant. Granted things can get a little nuts when they are busy, but calling someone a racist for being a little short, or faulting them for posting a sign saying that people who have been discriminated against for centuries actually matter is ridiculous. Of course all lives matter, but it’s time we put a spotlight on those treating people of color differently.

    1. Ellen because you discriminated against African Americans does not mean everyone else did

  14. BLM is a marxist organization. They want to end Capitalism and demand trillions in wealth transfers from people who had nothing to do with slavery to people who never suffered from slavery! This is a scam and the guilty white liberals from towns like Montclair are driving it! Wake up people before they come for YOU!! BLM is a racist hate group, and they DO NOT MATTER !!!

  15. The banner is in context to the BLM movement. When you say “all lives matter” in context to what people are standing up for. It’s like attending a walk for breast cancer and saying “all cancers matter.” Your pointing out the obvious, it doesn’t need to be said. However , By stating the obvious your taking away from the cause. “Black lives matter” doesn’t mean “only black lives matter” , It’s means the statement “all lives matter doesn’t become true until black lives are valued too” .

  16. The food is not that good anymore. My personal experience is that the manager can be rude and arrogant. He is definitely not as nice to you if you are dark-skinned!!

  19. All Lives Matter! Blue Lives Matter! Back the Blue! Where were all these people before Black Lives Matter? I wouldn’t brand them all as racists but why are they coming out now? No one is asserting that no other lives matter. All lives matter whether they are black, white, police officers or otherwise. However it’s abundantly clear that unarmed blacks are being killed by police officers. BLM is simply trying to bring attention to the carnage that is being visited upon black citizens. Ask yourself why does the BLM movement offend you?

  20. Why do so many people get offended over a statement , that was first brought to light, in the year 1865. Show you compassion and support history and recognize that the statement is merely saying Black lives matter ALSO.

  21. Dominick is a very nice human being and treat customers super nice 👌

  22. It’s funny yes all lives matter but white lives aren’t taken by the cops every five minutes white people aren’t over populating jails this country was built of African backs we are angry and tired of being second class if you want all lives to matter treat everyone equally and afford opportunities for all I don’t think most white people can relate they don’t have the same experiences and oppression holding them back you will never understand the shoes most blacks have walked in at one time or another I don’t care if your mate is black or you have black friends you will never understand!! Compassion isn’t understanding and for someone who said we steal and pilfer and use violence I don’t agree with those actions but when voices aren’t heard or respected what do you expect and I myself have white black gay rainbow friends I love everyone !!

  23. All lives matter but it’s always black lives that are taken so freely, unjustly, and without remorse. How many Caucasian people died by the hands of the police this year or last year? I ll wait.

    1. In 2019, 259 Black people were killed by police in the United States. This compares to 182 Hispanics, 13 Native Americans, and 406 White people.

Harvard economist Roland Fryer Jr. — who happens to be African American — found in 2016 that police are more likely to shoot white suspects than black suspects, if there is any racial bias in such shootings.

  24. Well now that I see Cuban Pete’s is supporting BLM…I love it even more. I’ve been going for years and it makes me so happy that they’re showing their support for the black community. In fact, I think I’ll order Cuban Pete’s for dinner tonight. BLACK LIVES MATTER!
