Atlantic City NJ, dispute a multitude of setbacks ,the Murphy administration is forging ahead with its bold vision to establish offshore wind farms along the Jersey coast.
In a unanimous decision, the state Board of Public Utilities has initiated the process of soliciting the latest bids from wind developers, aiming to expand offshore wind capacity to between 1.2 gigawatts and 4 gigawatts. If realized, this ambitious endeavor would position New Jersey well beyond halfway toward the administration’s goal of achieving 11 gigawatts of wind energy by 2040.
However, the road ahead may not be without its challenges. Recent struggles in the industry, including supply chain constraints and higher borrowing costs, have cast doubt on the feasibility of such ventures. Just this month, New York canceled three offshore wind projects that had previously received provisional approval, citing these obstacles. Additionally, Orsted, the world’s largest offshore wind developer, withdrew from two projects off the Jersey coast last autumn.
Despite these hurdles, the Murphy administration remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing renewable energy initiatives and harnessing the vast potential of offshore wind to power New Jersey’s future. As the state navigates through the complexities of the offshore wind landscape, critics have doubts over whether wind will pave the way toward a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
