NJ State Trooper Rescues Lone Bear Cub

Perryville Station , It’s not every day that a highway patrol turns into a wildlife rescue mission, but for the New Jersey State Police, “expecting the unexpected” is just part of the job.

On the afternoon of April 1, 2026, troopers from the Troop “B” Perryville Station received a call that was certainly no April Fools’ prank. A tiny, lone bear cub had been spotted in a roadside ditch along the busy I-78 East near milepost 12.2 in Union Township.

A Swift Response for a Small Passenger

Responding to the scene at approximately 1:37 p.m., troopers discovered the cub was indeed alone and appeared to be in need of immediate assistance. Without a mother bear in sight and the dangers of high-speed traffic just feet away, the troopers stepped in to ensure the cub’s safety.

The rescue was handled with care:

  • Secure Transport: The cub was safely secured and brought back to the Perryville barracks.

  • Expert Care: Recognizing that a bear cub requires specialized attention, the NJSP contacted the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

  • A New Beginning: The cub was officially handed over to wildlife experts who will provide the necessary care and rehabilitation.

 Wildlife Safety in New Jersey

This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the diverse wildlife that calls the Garden State home. While this cub was safely rescued, the NJSP and DEP remind residents that if you encounter a bear:

“Never approach a bear or attempt to handle wildlife yourself. Always contact local authorities or the DEP to ensure both human and animal safety.”

Thanks to the quick thinking of the New Jersey State Police, this little cub is off the highway and on the road to recovery.
