The Ridgewood Art Institute Annual Holiday Show and Sale features more than 150 pieces of beautiful artwork. This year there is also a Small Works Fundraising Exhibit with 80 pieces priced at $150 with all proceeds to benefit RAI. The opening reception is being held on Sunday, Nov. 22 from 1 to 4 p.m.

It’s a wonderful exhibit to visit and these one-of-a-kind paintings can prove to be a unique holiday gift as well.

“It’s one of the most exciting shows of the year” said RAI instructor Laura Paray. Oils, watercolors, pastel and drawings are on exhibit and painted by members of the Institute. Members were invited to enter two original works to be exhibited in this festive holiday setting.

New England’s beautiful scenery was a favorite for the “Barn” artists with Charles Brandenburg’s watercolor, “Gloucester Fog,” and Edward Galenkamp’s “Inner Harbor – Nantucket.”

RIDGEWOOD ARTS COUNCIL LAST CALL FOR ART

July 27,2015
the staff of the Ridgewood blogRidgewood NJ, The Ridgewood Arts Council (RAC) is placing a final call to all artists with a connection to Ridgewood to consider donating to a permanent art installation which will be housed throughout Ridgewood’s Village Hall. The intent of this installation, entitled Ridgewood Art at Village Hall, is to celebrate the wealth of talent among Ridgewood-related artists, past and present. We encourage contributors, 16 years and older, with a connection to

Ridgewood, to participate. Posthumous contributions from family members welcome. The process starts by artists e-mailing rac@ridgewoodnj.net for a short online submission form. Art can be in any medium and any size–fine art, photography, textile, mobile art and sculpture included. Deadline for submissions has been extended to August 1 so we urge all interested parties to submit ASAP. Once the installation is in place, we will be inviting our entire community to a gala launch event celebrating RAC and this new chapter of honoring the arts in Ridgewood!

“Crafts in Ridgewood,” to be held at the Unitarian Society next weekend, shows off a wealth of talent, a creative approach to life and perhaps, even the key to eternal youth. Okay, so not eternal; but who wants that anyway?

Among local artists is Doug Goodell, a photographer of birds and an author of a book about his trips searching for and catching those birds in his lens. Meridith Aderhold is a maker of jewelry.

Peter Goldberg’s skill is to re-purpose glass; he uses melted glass to fashion new objects. Steve Riskind likes to take his camera to industrial sites, capturing them in stark black and white.

Charles Saulenos creates bowls from burls. “Beautiful” says Bernie Spitz.

Bernie Spitz, a potter, started the Craft Show 23 years ago and has been at every one of those shows. He claims happily, “I’m a retired Navy man (three years as a Signalman USS Heron – 2nd class petty officer), I’m 89 and still making pots!”

Spitz, who retired in 1990 from Pfizer, went over to the Wortendyke Studio in Midland Park one day, became fascinated with pottery. “I took an interest in it and found I loved it!” he says. “I took workshops and classes with well known potters. I learned how to throw a pot there and eventually taught there.” He adds, “It’s mostly keeping at it and finding my own voice.” “Finding my own hand,” Marcia, his wife of 62 years, corrects him. .

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

The Ridgewood Art Institute (RAI) is playing host to artists from the tri-state area who are exhibiting their work as part of the Pascack Art Association’s (PAA) Second Annual Juried Art Show. There are 42 artworks in oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel as well as mixed media. Styles are both traditional and contemporary art. Cash and merchandise prizes were presented at a reception held last Sunday.

Best in Show award went to Derek Cameron for an acrylic featuring two cars from times past in vibrant colors, called “Old Friends.” Other award winners were: Rita Agron’s pastel, “Country Road,” a pastoral scene showing a great play of light and shadow; Rebecca Leer’s oil still life, “Mr. Kelly’s Bandana;” Victoria Majestic’s oil still life, “Freshly Cut;” and “Rooster” by Mira Oliker, a watercolor showing loose painting with a lot of movement.

Show chair Joyce Levine said, “It’s a very stimulating exhibit giving an opportunity to meet with artists from the tri-state area.” Levine previously studied with Paul Burns at RAI and also at the Art Student League. She had a 25-year career in architectural illustration as an art director in New York City. “Pony Tail,” her watercolor, shows a little ballerina at a local outdoor ballet show.

Lou Spina is showing a large oil painting, “Jean-Michel et Ami,” a scene from an outdoor café in Paris – a man with his dog. “Artists bring a variety of styles and subject matter which makes for a very interesting exhibit,” he said. Spina is PAA president.
