Reader says Ridgewood CBD parking instructions are “convoluted”

Ridgewood Parking signs

Just rec’d an email with convoluted parking instructions for various locations throughout town; spaces marked by special symbols for various uses – shoppers, commuters, employees…. Do they really expect us to remember all of these rules and symbols? I’m sure it looks like a perfect solution for the bureaucrat that designed it but to us regular folks it’s ridiculous and too complicated to be effective. We should have built the garage and voters only have themselves to blame. I went into town the other night at 4:30 for the first time probably all year, had to drive around half a dozen times to find a parking space, traffic was backed up, cars double parked, it was a mess. It will be another year before I return.

Ridgewood NJ, 2017 Annual Parking Permits – Annual Resident, Non-resident and CBD employee parking permits are available for purchase at Village Hall. Driver’s License and car registration are required to apply for all parking permits. The Annual Parking Permits for residents cost $750 or $1,000 annually, depending on which lots are chosen for parking.

Parking Permits

Ho Ho Kus $350
Glen Rock $150  and $80 for the second tag

Fair lawn  $1 a day residents $4 a day non-residents
Allendale $50 for residents

Other towns including Allendale often pitch new residents; “Compared to Ridgewood it is great! One of the advantages of Allendale. You can get a parking space pretty easily anytime of day (unlike Ridgewood) The resident permit was $50”

Reader says This pedestrian vs. motorist argument is tiresome

Bike Lane Traffic Easing Ridgewood

This pedestrian vs. motorist argument is tiresome. Especially in a place like Ridgewood, most of us are both. This is not about two mutually exclusive factions. This is not NYC!

Also – the post this reader is making is redundant. Yes – in a contest between a multi-thousand pound chunk of steel and a human, the steel will always win! I am not aware of anyone who does not get that – and willfully steps in front of a car assuming that it will stop.

At the same time, most drivers are not out to run some pedestrian over or intentionally not pay attention. Especially in the dark, it is easy to miss a pedestrian, all the most so when there are oncoming headlights in your eyes (coming up the slope on Godwin) or just random vehicular traffic (Franklin from the underpass through Maple).

The focus should be on better traffic designs.

For instance, pedestrian operated traffic lights at some of the more accident prone locations. This seems to be a must in and around downtown. I fail to see how this would break the bank for the Village. It is also a safer and less bothersome approach than the current pedestrian crosswalks.

Then we need bright – and I mean VERY bright – lighting of pedestrian crosswalks in downtown. It is easy to miss a pedestrian in the dark with oncoming traffic. We cannot expect all pedestrians to wear reflective clothing. So lets make them more visible.

Reader says The responsibility is on the pedestrian to keep himself safe

CBD_theridgewoodblog-300x220

I use the crosswalks.I look once, twice, three times and then look again. I keep looking as I cross the road. Most importantly I DO NOT trust the drivers to follow the rules of the road and yield to pedestrians…
I’ve probably walked hundreds of miles over the years just crossing streets and I’ve never been hit.
Defensive walking and self-responsibility keeps you alive and in one piece. Sometimes that involves waiting, even if it is not “practical” – better to be late and alive than on-time and dead.
.
This is not to excuse the poor driving by some – it acknowledges it (or at least the potential for dangerous drivers).
the biggest mistake is to look to the law or the police or the government to “fix” bad drivers.
The responsibility is on the pedestrian to keep himself safe. No matter how “in the right” you are, you will ALWAYS lose an “argument” with a motor vehicle.

Reader says I urge some of you road warriors to actually spend some time trying to use crosswalks during busy times

DecorativeCrosswalks006_theridgewoodblog

This subject comes up about every two months and the resulting comments are always the same. We get a few sensible comments but they are drowned out with these made-up and exaggerated accounts of dodging pedestrians who run out, some putting on make-up, some are texting. I’m not suggesting that some pedestrians aren’t reckless but these stories are simply untrue. They are the same stereotypical stories of teenagers driving while applying make-up or aggressive, latte-sipping moms from the Heights in their big SUVs.

I urge some of you road warriors to actually spend some time trying to use crosswalks during busy times. It’s not a case of waiting for that one car to pass by before crossing. Traffic is heavy, and it comes in multiple directions. One lane might stop for the waiting pedestrian, but the other lane does not. Stopped driver gets frustrated and thinks the pedestrian is being stupid for not crossing, so he shakes his head and drivers on.

It’s not that simple. It’s easy to say just wait, but that often isn’t practical. The only real safe way to solve this would be to have traffic lights at every crossing. The downsides of this, however, would be massive costs and massive traffic congestion while the generally free-flowing traffic is caught up in multiple traffic lights.

Readers debate Ridgewood Cross Walk Safety

Village of Ridgewood

Too many pedestrians are on their cell phones or concentrating on their music and never even attempt to stop or look before entering a crosswalk. This often requires a car to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting them while hoping that their car does not get real ended at the same time.

The second major problem that I find is that I do stop to let the pedestrian cross–but the car behind me does not and goes around me. This turns the pedestrian into a target. If a car is stopped without a signal, it usually means a pedestrian.

Thirdly, the tall plants at the corners are lovely, but after dark, they could easily be a person or vice versa

I also have no problem letting a pedestrian cross in the crosswalk and will always yield to them. As for jaywalking – good luck. It is nerve-wracking enough just driving thru town trying to get from one end to the other without hitting anything!. Watching for the transit bus, runners, jaywalkers, cell phone users, double parkers, sun glare and other cars not paying attention…..to name a few distractions

I find in Ridgewood a majority of people do not use a crosswalk they just step out from between parked cars children in tow and hope you stop. In the central business area, there is a complete lack of police enforcement of motor vehicle laws and nothing is ever done about dumb pedestrians stepping out where ever they wish.

Ridgewood NJ, this is a first in a new series of articles for the Ridgewood blog promoting our local merchants and restaurants.
It seems the Village Tea Shop out did themselves taking care of a resident.

“A HUGE thank you to my friend May from the Village Tea Shop in Ridgewood. She just rang my doorbell and completely surprised me with a hot cup of wellness tea with ginger honey because she heard from my friend Geary that I am down and out with a crummy virus. I am not at the tea shop (as the posting indicates) but I am sipping the delicious tea in my easy chair and envisioning myself there right now. Maybe in a few days . . . Thank you May! And for my Facebook friends that are local, you need to get to the tea shop and try their amazing products. Good for the body and soul!”

The Village Tea Shop is a small cozy shop serving a large selection of organic and fair trade teas from around the world. Crafted tea drinks, smoothies, bubble tea, and yes coffee.

Fish Urban Dining shut down of its Asbury Park location still a Mystery

Fish
December 13,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood

Ridgewood NJ, it was reported on News 12 that Fish Urban Dining abruptly shut down its Asbury Park location closed in early October.

Fish opened in Asbury Park in 2010 and followed with great fanfare a second location in the summer of 2015 in the Village of Ridgewood in the Citizens bank or Bank of America building depending on how old you are. Both locations are owned by the DeGilio’s City by the Sea Hospitality Group. DeGilio’s City also closed Cibo e Vino in Asbury Park in October as well.

Both restaurants were considered “popular ” and seemed to close abruptly leaving the shut down as a mystery.

The Hoboken Man, Hoboken’s #1 barbershop opened its second location in Ridgewood

The Ridgewood Man
December 9,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, The Hoboken Man, Hoboken’s #1 barbershop opened its second location in Ridgewood, NJ on December 2 in coordination with Ridgewood’s ”Downtown for the Holiday’s Tree Lighting Ceremony.” The Ridgewood Man mirrors the services and ambiance of its predecessor and aims to give its clients a classic barbershop experience with all the services of a high-end salon.
Located at 66 East Ridgewood Avenue, The Ridgewood Man is the premier place to go for any man who wants to look his best.
“We are excited to open our second location,” said co-owner and Ridgewood resident, Dan Hood. “So many of our Hoboken clients are moving to Ridgewood that opening a second location simply made sense. As in Hoboken, we saw that Ridgewood men wanted an upscale place to get their hair cut- not the typical, female-centric salons that populate the area. We’re filling that void.”
The shop itself has a modern, masculine feel with richly stained wood panel walls, chrome accents, and historical tin ceiling. Flat panel high-definition televisions hang in optimal viewing areas around the barbershop, as do a collection of vintage Playboy magazine covers.
The Ridgewood Man offers clients everything from classic straight razor shaves with hot lather and precision haircuts, to spa manicures and pedicures, to anti-aging and deep cleansing facials and massages. Clients can choose individual services, or purchase memberships for unlimited haircuts.
“Once men see the benefits of professionally maintaining their appearance, they’re hooked,” said Hood. “We’re here to give them a premium experience every time they visit us.”

The Ridgewood Man owners include Dan Hood, who led the effort to open the new location; Steven Holm, a finance professional; Emily Gonce, a lobbyist; Erik Connaughton, a consultant; and Jennifer Connaughton, a high-end children’s clothing designer and owner of Ferd Kids. Dan and his wife, Dr. Cristina Maniu, an OBGYN physician at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, recently moved to Ridgewood from Hoboken, NJ.
“We understand and believe in our collective vision for both The Hoboken Man and The Ridgewood Man,” says Gonce. “The backbone of any business is highly skilled staff paired with intelligent, strategic, forward thinking management. We look forward to serving the Ridgewood community for years to come.”
