Ridgewood NJ, the U.S. and Canada celebrate National Coffee Day on September 29th.
The history of National Coffee Day seems a bit, well, cloudy. We believe September 29 came about as a jolting reminder to get back to work following a long summer.
Ridgewood NJ, first you couldn’t use the bathroom now the days of hanging out at Starbucks while watching porn as you sip a Grande pumpkin spice latte are almost over.Starting next year, all Starbucks locations in the U.S. will block pornography viewing on store WiFi. After the porn-blocking decision was announced, the popular porn site YouPorn banned all Starbucks products from its offices starting on Jan. 1.

Company announces a new ‘Partner and Family Sick Time’ benefit for all U.S. employees to launch this year Announces second wage increase for all U.S. hourly and salaried partners in addition to the annual increases already granted this fiscal year Announces additional 2018 Stock Grant with a one-year vest Highlights an Aon study indicating its standing as the No. 1 retailer in comprehensive benefits for part-time and full-time employees Reiterated commitment to create more than 8,000 new retail jobs and 500 manufacturing jobs this year as part of the company’s strategic growth plan
Ridgewood NJ, Building on a long history of providing relevant, industry-leading benefits, Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) today announced a series of new partner (employee) offerings that span across wage and benefits. These offerings will total more than $250 million for more than 150,000 partners and are accelerated by recent changes in the U.S. tax law. Further details on the impact of these changes on our 2018 financial statements and earnings guidance will be discussed during our January 25 earnings call.
With this investment, Starbucks announces a total compensation approach that is best in class for part-time and full-time employees across American retail.
According to a new benchmarking study Starbucks commissioned, performed by Aon, a leading global professional services firm providing a broad range of risk, retirement and health solutions, the benefits awarded to partners who work 20 hours or more per week at Starbucks rank above any other retailer in the study and are three times more valuable than any other retailer in their study.
“For more than 30 years, Starbucks has continued to challenge the status quo offering comprehensive employee compensation for our partners (employees). We were one of the first retailers to offer full healthcare benefits to our partners –even those working part-time– and more recently we revolutionized access to a tuition-free four-year degree for all partners with the Starbucks College Achievement Plan through our partnership with Arizona State University,” said Kevin Johnson, ceo of Starbucks.
“Today, we are proud to announce additional investment in stock, wages and a new Partner and Family Sick Time benefit that will further enhance our industry-leading approach. Just as we have always felt strongly that our partners are key to our business success, we have also known offering a valuable, comprehensive benefits package helps us retain our valuable partners. The value of Starbucks benefit package [fully accessed] is unmatched by other retailers and provides thousands of dollars above the value of other companies compensation offerings. I am extremely proud to share that in the past four years Starbucks has made an investment of nearly $800 million in employee compensation and benefits—a testament to our belief in our people and the role they play in creating the Starbucks Experience,” added Johnson.
Starbucks provided the following details regarding these investment decisions:
Starbucks pays above the minimum wage in all states across the country. In April, all eligible U.S. hourly and salaried partners will receive a second wage increase in addition to the annual increases that they have already received this fiscal year. This will include an investment of approximately $120 million in wage increases that will be allocated based on regional cost of living and laws that vary from state to state.
On April 16, we will provide an additional 2018 stock grant for all eligible full-time, part-time, hourly and salaried U.S. partners across our stores, plants and support centers, who have been active as of Jan. 1, 2018. All Starbucks retail partners will receive at least a $500 grant, store managers will each receive $2000 grant and plant and support center partner (non-retail) grants will vary depending on annualized salary or level. This investment alone is valued at more than $100 million.
A new Partner and Family Sick Time benefit will be available to all eligible U.S. partners, which will allow partners to accrue paid sick time based on hours worked and then use them if they or a family member needs care. When this benefit goes into effect this year, Sick Time will accrue at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, thus a partner working 23 hours a week can expect to accrue approximately five days of sick time benefit over the course of one year.
Starbucks has also reaffirmed their commitment to create more than 8,000 new part-time and full-time retail jobs and an additional 500 manufacturing jobs in its Augusta, Georgia soluble coffee plant.
For store partners, Starbucks has also expanded their parental leave policy to include all non-birth parents with up to 6 weeks of paid leave when welcoming a new child.
These new offerings are in addition to the nearly $7 billion of capital that Starbucks will deploy to build and renovate stores, manufacturing plants and technology platforms in the U.S. over the next five years. Starbucks remains committed to providing opportunities to tens of thousands of Americans from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Starbucks also remains committed in continuing to offer industry-leading comprehensive health care benefits and marketplace, disability and life insurance benefits, a 401K savings plan benefit and continue the Starbucks College Achievement Plan, which is a free tuition benefit offered to Starbucks partners together with Arizona State University.
Coffee drinkers live longer, according to two large-scale studies released Monday that add to extensive research indicating coffee consumption is associated with better health.
The studies examined the health histories of hundreds of thousands of people who were tracked over many years. They found that coffee-drinking reduced the risk of various diseases among people from several ethnicities, and this effect was seen in drinkers of regular or decaffeinated coffee. And the more coffee consumed, the greater the benefit.
Ridgewood NJ, yes its true Starbucks is opening a second location in downtown Ridgewood, around the corner from its first coffee shop in the village on Ridgewood Avenue and you will not even have to park.
The new convenience Starbucks drive thru will eliminate the need for parking in Ridgewood’s central business district .
Located at the former Fleet Bank property ,next to TD Bank on Franklin Avenue the drive-through only location, will be unlike the Starbucks at 193 E. Ridgewood Avenue, which is a more traditional Starbucks .
The Starbucks coffee and go location will be the third food operation to attempt to make a go of the Fleet drive-through kiosk on Franklin Avenue. After the Fleet drive-through closed following the ’04 merger with Bank of America, a drive-through convenience store opened on the site in ’06 and was later was replaced by a short-lived drive-through coffee shop.
Observers see the new coffee and go location as a positive attempt to circumvent to peak period parking issues in the CBD , but concerns about possible added traffic congestion remain.

Following discussion, the Board approved the following resolution for Adoption of the 2017-2018 Preliminary Proposed Budget for Submission to the Executive County Superintendent of Schools:
BE IT RESOLVED, by the Ridgewood Board of Education, to approve the 2017-2018 school district preliminary proposed budget, as follows, for submission to the Executive County Superintendent of Schools:

Ridgewood NJ, as previously reported on the Ridgewood blog ,and we also learned that sometime last year Councilman Voigt asked a member of the public to have coffee. Over coffee, Mr. Voigt asked Mr. Saurabh Dani to come to a public meeting and ask specific questions so that Jeff could then have the entree to give scripted answers. Mr. Dani refused to play such an unethical game……but he spoke up about it tonight after witnessing the exact same scenario playing out between Jeff Voigt and Hans Lehmann. He also called for the resignation of Councilman Voigt.
Besides being married to faux-minister Jan Phillips, to whom Aronsohn made the big mistake of opening the door via that insane “civility” group (a product of the great minds at White Horse Strategies?) that we all hope to forget soon, Hans Lehmann chairs our Zoning Board of Adjustment. As such it is inappropriate for him to openly criticize the council, to whom the board reports. He should be removed for this behavior even though his term, according to the village website, officially ends on June 30, 2019.
Ridgewood NJ, Whether getting one to go or lingering over a second cup, on September 29 be sure to observe National Coffee Day! Ah, the perfect cup of java. According to an expert cupper (a professional coffee taster), there are four components of a perfect cup: aroma, body, acidity, and flavor.
From the moment the average coffee lover opens a fresh bag of coffee beans, the aroma beckons, percolating the senses. Even those who don’t drink coffee tend to enjoy the fragrance a roasted bean casts.
When determining the body of a coffee, the bean, the roast, and the brew are all factors. The bean affects the texture of the coffee, whether its silky, creamy, thick or thin on the tongue and throat. However, the darker the roast and how it is brewed will alter the feel of a coffee’s body, too. Grandpa’s motor oil blend versus the coffee shop around the corner’s silky smooth, well-practiced grind have entirely different bodies.
The region a coffee is grown determines its acidity. The higher the elevation the coffee grows, the higher the quality and the acidity. These coffees are considered brighter, dryer, even sparkling by cuppers.
When it comes down to it, coffee lovers cherish the flavor as well as the caffeinated boost this roasted bean gives morning or night, black or with cream and sugar. Hot or cold it provides enjoyment even when decaffeinated!
There are many legendary accounts of how coffee first came to be, but the earliest credible evidence of either coffee drinking or the knowledge of the coffee tree appears in the middle of the 15th century in the Sufi monasteries around Mokha in Yemen. It was here coffee seeds were first roasted and brewed, much like they are prepared today. Yemeni traders brought coffee back to their homeland from Ethiopia and began to cultivate the seed.
In 1670, coffee seeds were smuggled out of the Middle East by Baba Budan, as he strapped seven coffee seeds onto his chest. The first plants grown from these smuggled seeds were planted in Mysore. It was then that coffee spread to Italy, to the rest of Europe, to Indonesia and the Americas.
Brazil produces more coffee in the world than any other country followed by Colombia. More than 50 countries around the world grow coffee, providing a delicious variety for the indulgence of steamy cups of the black drink for connoisseurs to consume.

Ridgewood NJ, Monday A customer of the Starbucks located at 363 Route 17, Ridgewood departed without his laptop computer bag, which resulted in a temporary evacuation of the facility and a response by Ridgewood PD & FD units on Monday, 09/26 when a passing police supervisor noticed the unattended package. However, prior to the arrival of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad unit, the customer returned for his property. An all clear was given after the bag was inspected; police subsequently reopened the parking lot and allowed employees to return inside the establishment.
Tall, grande or venti? Your answer may depend on whether you believe this.
People who drink three to five cups of coffee a day may be less likely to die prematurely from some illnesses than those who drink less coffee or don’t drink any coffee at all, according to a new study released by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health researchers and published online in the journal Circulation.
What’s more, drinkers of both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee saw benefits, including a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases, Type 2 diabetes and suicide. “Moderate consumption of coffee may confer health benefits in terms of reducing premature death due to several diseases,” said senior author Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard. (These findings support a 2012 study of over 400,000 men and women published in The New England Journal of Medicine, which found an association between coffee drinkers and lower rates of mortality due to several diseases including stroke, respiratory diseases and diabetes.)
The data include nearly 168,000 women in the Nurses’ Health Study (I and II, the former started in 1976 and the latter started in 1989) and look at factors influencing women’s health, plus 40,557 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, started in 1986and designed to complement the Nurses’ Health Study, sponsored by the Harvard School of Public Health and the National Cancer Institute. Coffee drinking was assessed using validated food questionnaires every four years over about 30 years. During the study period, 19,524 women and 12,432 men died from a range of causes.
Genetic variation means some don’t need as much coffee to get a kick Change in the PDSS2 gene makes it harder for body to metabolise caffeine People without the variation process caffeine faster and so drink more

our desire to grab coffee from Starbucks could be written in your genes, scientists claim.
New research has found people with a certain variation of a gene don’t need to consume as much coffee to get a caffeine hit – quelling their urge for more.
The gene in question is called PDSS2 – and the variation reduces the body’s ability to break down caffeine – causing it stay in a person’s system for longer.
Those without the variation metabolise caffeine more quickly and as a result, are more likely to have an extra cup each day.
