The bill (S2930), introduced by top Democrats just a week ago, faced swift opposition from nonprofits, civil rights organizations, unions, and the media, who voiced their concerns at dual committee meetings in Trenton on Monday. Originally slated for a crucial hearing in the state Assembly appropriations committee on Thursday, the bill was unexpectedly withdrawn from the agenda shortly before noon.

Trenton NJ, after a lengthy and contentious debate, a contentious bill aiming to overhaul New Jersey’s Open Public Records Act (OPRA) took a step forward on Monday night. Advocates from various organizations, including Alex Ambrose of the New Jersey Policy Perspective, voiced their opposition to the proposed legislation during a marathon committee meeting of the state Senate Budget Committee. Ambrose and many others argued that the bill, which seeks to restrict public access to government documents and information, would create additional barriers for citizens seeking transparency in government operations. Despite the overwhelming opposition voiced during the hearing, the committee voted 9-4 to move the bill forward for further consideration by the full state Senate.

Trenton NJ, on Friday afternoon, more than two months after the law required legislators’ requests for budget funding to be released to the public, Democrats released requests that all have this disclaimer stamped at the top: “The Budget Bill includes this Resolution, either as submitted or in a modified form.” It’s not clear how original budget requests were sanitized, but they have almost all been modified to remove required explanations about how the money will be spent.
