Why Male Domestic Abuse Victims Remain Silent

external content.duckduckgo 1

When people think about domestic abuse, the picture that typically comes to mind is a man beating up a woman. While this form of domestic abuse is quite common, it is far from the only domestic violence that occurs. Men beat women, men beat men, women beat women, women beat men. Male victims of domestic abuse are less likely to come forward, though, for many reasons, the main one being that they are often not believed.

Could it have ended differently?

Suzanne Bardzell left a long trail of criminal complaints against her ex-boyfriend over the past month leading up to her death. She obtained a temporary restraining order and called Midland Park police in desperation again and again to report he violated that order. At some point, perhaps fearing for her life, she had a camera surveillance system installed at her home.

For all of her precautions, police say her former boyfriend fatally stabbed her in her driveway on Oct. 22 after a tumultuous 17 days that began when he allegedly broke into her home, threatening her life, and included a massive manhunt after he allegedly violated a restraining order. The available court records in Bardzell’s case are incomplete, and make it unclear, in hindsight, whether any steps were missed by law enforcement and the court system in their efforts to protect her.

The weeks leading up to the Oct. 22 stabbing death of Suzanne Bardzell of Midland Park were marked by a fearful series of events as alleged killer Arthur J. Lomando was charged repeatedly with threatening, terrorizing and harassing the mother of two, according to police records released Thursday.

The files document nearly a dozen alleged incidents — several leading to criminal complaints filed by Bardzell and police in Midland Park and in Teaneck, where the victim worked as a private-school teacher — that preceded the killing of the 48-year-old in the driveway of her Godwin Avenue home.

The records were released by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office as a result of an Open Public Records Act request by The Record.

Judge Who Let Ray Rice Off For Domestic Abuse Pushes Prosecution Of Philly Single Mom

The same judge and prosecutor who let professional football star Ray Rice avoid a trial after beating his wife unconscious are pushing forward with the prosecution of Shaneen Allen, a single mother who carried a gun into New Jersey without realizing her Pennsylvania permit didn’t apply there.

Allen, a mother of two from Philadelphia, was driving in New Jersey last fall when she was pulled over by a police officer. She informed the officer she had a handgun in her purse and a Pennsylvania license-to-carry permit, at which point the officer arrested her and charged her with a felony for unlawful possession of a weapon, because New Jersey does not recognize out-of-state gun permits.

Allen tried to avoid a trial and jail time by applying to a pre-trial intervention program in New Jersey for first-time offenders. Ray Rice, the Baltimore Ravens running back who knocked his then-fiancée unconscious during an altercation in Atlantic City in February, was accepted into the program in May.

But Superior Court Judge Michael Donio and New Jersey District Attorney Jim McClain, the same judge and prosecutor who allowed Rice to avoid prosecution, denied Allen’s application to the program on Wednesday.

Allen has no criminal record, and she claims she bought the gun for self-defense after being robbed. Her trial is scheduled for October.
