When I lived in Ridgewood, I often proposed solutions to Ridgewood’s many problems.
They were all good ideas. They were mostly ignored.
After 40 years, I had to move because of the village’s high taxes, but I still follow news about Ridgewood and now there is an issue I really can solve.
Some 400-plus kids in the village can’t cope with lunch that is provided by the schools or in a home-fixed brown bag.
Maybe their parents don’t like bags or don’t want to be bothered. So these kids need personal lunches.
Understandably, school staffers don’t want their days disrupted delivering personalized lunches and worrying about an extra threat to school security. Not so understandably, some parents who want personalized lunches for their kids – and some delis – are suing the school system.
There is a solution so simple no one can oppose it: Let the delis deliver a lunch to each child at home, just before he or she leaves for school.
Chef Chris Tarta of Due and Bella Campagnia on the crazy thing diners ask for.

THE RECORD
Like most executive chef/owners, Chris Tarta has a hectic schedule. But the 35-year-old father of two (with a third on the way) must juggle two restaurants, Bella Campania Ristorante in Hillsdale and Due in Ridgewood, which opened in June. Tarta, a new Wyckoff resident, admits to growing pains at Due (it received two out of four stars in this newspaper; Bella Campania received two and one-half in 2010), but says the problems are getting fixed. He recommends that you head to Bella Campania for a family dinner, while saving Due for a special occasion. Here, Tarta talks about his daily mozzarella-making, his grandmother and Swedish meatballs.

Larry Stevens Band
Some people are just born with music coursing through their veins. Larry Stevens has been singing and performing since he was merely 5 years old. An accomplished singer-songwriter, Stevens has shared the stage with many national acts including Gin Blossoms, Blood Sweat & Tears, Kenny Loggins, Huey Lewis and the News, Foreigner, The Doobie Brothers, America, and Peter Frampton, just to name a few. Hopping over the bridge to NYC, Stevens has found himself on stage at some of the most sought-after venues such as The Bitter End, Kenny’s Castaways, and The Iridium, and also has performed at many noteworthy venues in New Jersey including Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC), PNC Bank Arts Center, New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), and the Quick Chek New Jersey Festival of Ballooning. While living in Nashville, Stevens wrote, collaborated and performed with many of the most prominent names in the music world, and performed at the most coveted singer/songwriter venue in the world, the legendary Bluebird Café, as well as many other important stages.
With years of experience performing in diverse settings, Stevens is a dynamic entertainer with a gift for reading his audience. The melodies in his original material have been compared to those of Jack Johnson, Plain White T’s and the Beatles. Stevens is currently in the studio working on his newest CD, and has had the privilege of including world-renowned musicians such as Liberty Devitto (Billy Joel), George Small (Graham Parker/John Lennon), Muddy Shews (Southside Johnny), Jimmy Clark (Blondie/Joan Jett), and Kenny Vaughan (Marty Stuart/Lucinda Williams) on many of his recordings.

RESTAURANT REVIEWER
No lie: When I heard that Giocomo Mistretta was in the kitchen of the new Ridgewood restaurant Mémoire, I had to restrain myself from charging in immediately in search of one dish: The salmon that Mistretta served at the former Napa Valley Grille at the Westfield Garden State Plaza set a high bar, one that I was crossing my fingers that Mémoire could match.
It did. Grilled crisp and flaky, Mémoire’s salmon is topped with cranberry ginger honey butter and served over a subtle mix of Israeli couscous and roasted vegetables ($24). It’s like an old friend, and sums up the menu: contemporary American with an eclectic array of influences, but ultimately more familiar than edgy.
For these ten days, participating restaurants are offering you the chance to experience dining in Ridgewood like never before. Each chef is preparing a tantalizing 3-course, prix-fixe menu for your dining pleasure. Choose from 3 appetizers, 3 entrees and 3 desserts for only $25.14.

Lisa’s Mediterranean Cuisine in Ridgewood

Lisa’s Turkish Kitchen is a Ridgewood, NJ institution for Middle Eastern, namely Turkish, cuisine. A few months ago, the restaurant moved from its original location on Chestnut Street one block east to 28 Oak Street and changed its name to Lisa’s Mediterranean Cuisine.
I have never been to Lisa’s at its original location, but have heard great things. So recently I decided to pay Lisa’s a visit for a solo lunch. I love Turkish food. It’s delicious and shares similar flavors with other Mediterranean cuisines.
