THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

This weekend won’t be a summer scorcher, but Saturday will still be the first official beach day of the season in Ridgewood.

Just as the unseasonable chill that struck earlier this week eases into residents’ afterthoughts, Graydon Park’s beach and pool will open for the 2015 swim season. By mid-afternoon Saturday, real feel temperatures will approach 80 degrees under partly sunny skies, according to AccuWeather.com reports.

Patrons returning this season won’t see many new physical features at the pool nor will the Wibit make its return; instead, Graydon this summer will be about old-fashioned fun under the sun with more programming, said Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation Nancy Bigos.

Pool and beach goers can take advantage of the park’s familiar features. The shaded playground and shade kites, water play fountains, picnic and charcoal grilling areas, Adirondack chairs and sheltered pavilion are among the many amenities.

For those who enjoy summer activity, Graydon offers plenty of space for beach volleyball, basketball, shuffleboard and hop-scotch, among other games. Volunteers will also help run the “Storytime Under a Tree” program for children.

Expanded swim and diving instruction for patrons of all ages and skill levels are offered, as are various lifeguard training and recertification classes. Spots on the Graydon swim team are also available.

Unusual calendar causes quirk to schedule at Ridgewood’s Graydon Pool

Graydon_swimlanes_theridgewoodblog

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

An early start to the school calendar, a late Sept. 7 date for Labor Day and the return of many teachers on the last day of August has caused a quirk in the schedule for Graydon Pool this year.

The pool is currently scheduled to cease weekday operations on Aug. 31.

During a work session last Wednesday, the Village Council discussed potential ways to make up for the lost days of available swimming, including the possibility of opening earlier during the pre-season.

This fall, students will return to school on Sept. 2 with teachers arriving on Aug. 31, which impacts the village’s ability to properly staff Graydon Pool during that final week before Labor Day.

Councilman Michael Sedon floated the idea of opening the pool to residents during the morning in June. Beginning on June 6, Graydon is scheduled to open at noon and close at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays while opening at 10 a.m. on weekends. Sedon proposed to have Graydon open at 10 a.m. on all days until regular season hours commence on June 19.

“I thought maybe a compromise might be opening it up in the pre-season earlier for an additional two hours,” Sedon said. “You would already have staff there, you would already have everybody doing what they would do at the pool, you would just have to do it two hours earlier for, I believe, nine days in the pre-season and there is a cost associated with that.”

Graydon hours of operation to be limited this summer

graydon_pool_theridgewoodblog

Tim Cronin and Nancy Bigos of the Dept. of Parks & Rec have posted the Graydon schedule on the Graydon page of the Village calendar as follows (asterisks have been added):

2015 SEASON
Early Season – Saturday, June 6 to Thursday, June 18
Weekends, 10 am to 7:30 pm
Weekdays, ***12 noon*** to 7:30 pm

Regular Season – Friday, June 19 to Sunday, August 16
Daily, 10 am to 7:30 pm
July 4th – Holiday hours, 10 am to 4 pm

Late Season – Monday, August 17 to Sunday, August 30th
Weekends, 10 am to 7:30 pm
Weekdays, ***12 noon*** to 7:30 pm

****POOL CLOSED – Monday, August 31 through Friday, September 4****

Labor Day Weekend – Saturday, Sept 5 through Monday, Sept 7
Daily, 10 am to 7:30 pm

https://www.ridgewoodnj.net/department_detail.cfm?dept_id=41

Translation:

1.  Graydon will open two hours late (at noon) on the first 9 weekdays in June following theJune 6-7 opening weekend (that is, June 8-12 and 15-18). Full opening hours (10 AM to 7:30 PM) will begin on Friday, June 19, the day after the last day of school. Late opening resumes for 10 weekdays in late August (Aug. 17-21 and 24-28).

Total of short days: 19 = 38 lost hours of beach time.

Note: Crestwood Lake in Allendale will open two full weeks earlier, on May 23. Weekday hours until school is out will be 1-5 PM throughout that period.

2.  Graydon will be CLOSED for the entire 5 days before Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 4). Rationale: lifeguards will not be available because they’ll be in school, with Ridgewood and some other schools opening before Labor Day (Sept. 7)–but none as early as Aug. 31, and Ridgewood with a half-day on Wed. 9/9 and only 2 full days of school, why close all week?

The other part of the argument is that pool managers will be unavailable because they are teachers.

So maybe hire a couple who aren’t teachers? There’s still time.

Total of lost hours that week: 47.5 (9.5/day x 5 days)

Total lost beach time: 38 hours (late opening) + 47.5 hours (week before Labor Day weekend) = 85.5 hours

That’s the equivalent of 9 full lost days (9.5 x 9).

Full hours all season would include 893 hours. Since the first Saturday in June is late this year (June 6), the season is already short. From the first Saturday in June through Labor Day runs 13 weeks 3 days, or (13 x 7) + 3 = 94 days; that’s 9.5 hours/day x 94 = 893 hours. Removing 85.5 hours constitutes a 10.44% reduction. An additional 3.5 hours of closing occur on July 4, when Graydon is closed at 4 PM as a “drop zone” for fireworks.

WHY IS IT NECESSARY to demonstrate to the council every year that people still care about Graydon? I don’t know, but it is.

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE if people show up at a council meeting to express their views/displeasure? I don’t know, but it often helps. And the less familiar their faces are, the better–also odd but true.

I am not attempting to convene a rally. However, next Wednesday’s council meeting is our last shot at trying to get this year’s proposed reduced hours rolled back. THE COUNCIL MUST STILL VOTE ON IT, although it would have slid through this important step if I hadn’t noticed the web page announcement and yawped at them at the April 8 council meeting. There was no meeting this week; Graydon, I’m told, will be on the agenda for next week. (The agenda has not been posted yet; https://www.ridgewoodnj.net/agenda.cfm/)

If you care about this, please make your voice heard.

The council is tired of hearing my voice and so am I. It has been amply demonstrated that a show of strength and interest at a council meeting makes an impression on elected officials. It may not help, but it can’t hurt. And there is always next year and beyond for the council to consider and plan for.

Village Council
Public Work Session
Wednesday, April 22, 7:30 PM
Village Hall courtroom, 4th floor

Public comment is likely to begin shortly after 7:30, after the Pledge of Allegiance. Please consider stating briefly why the opening hours matter to you and why you believe our council and staff should make whatever effort is required to keep Graydon open for full summer hours–a situation that was assumed and unquestioned for decades.

Be specific, if possible: morning swim fan; work schedule prevents going when it’s open; want to invite guests or take children/grandchildren when a late opening is now scheduled; like to take vacation days from work to go swimming, but want to arrive before noon; council claims to care about seniors; school-aged children do not comprise Graydon’s only constituency; unnecessary to shut down for the entire week before Labor Day, even considering school schedules; why not at least open from 3 to 7:30 on those days?

If you can’t come, please consider contacting the council to express your views. Their email addresses will pop up in an email form through this link:

https://www.preservegraydon.org/write-council

And then we’ll see! Thanks.

Swimmingly,
Marcia

Graydon Pool may have revenue shortfall due to early school opening
March 26,2015
Boyd A. Loving

Just when you though you’d heard everything –

Ridgewood NJ, It appears as though the scheduled September 2, 2015 opening of the Ridgewood Public Schools may seriously impact Graydon Pool revenues this summer.  Graydon Pool is currently scheduled to remain open until Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2015.

Village Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck, liaison to the Parks, Recreation & Conservation Board, stated that the last operating week of Graydon Pool (just prior to and including Labor Day) traditionally generates a significant amount of revenue. If  the Pool is forced to change its schedule and close earlier in the season than Labor Day [due to the unavailability of lifeguards (students) and supervisory staff (teachers)], the Pool may experience a significant revenue loss.

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — A wrongful-death lawsuit filed against the village by the family of a 13-year-old boy who drowned in Graydon Pool in 2008 has been settled.

Ridgewood’s manager, Roberta Sonenfeld, said BetWinner Argentina ,the $2.1 million settlement was reached Wednesday.

Sonenfeld briefly discussed the settlement during Wednesday night’s council meeting.

Soo Hyeon Park, his sister and parents had just arrived from South Korea when they went to visit friends in Ridgewood on July 15, 2008. As he swam to a dock in the deep end of the pool with the two sons of his host, the boy began struggling to stay afloat and went under.

None of the nine lifeguards on the stands around the pool that day saw the boy while he was in distress.

In 2011, a jury had awarded Soo’s family $10 million in damages. That decision was vacated in January by the state’s Appellate Court and a new trial was ordered.

New trial ordered on claim of Ridgewood liability in boy’s drowning at Graydon Pool

THE RECORD

An appeals court Thursday ordered a new trial in a wrongful-death case in which the Village of Ridgewood was hit with a multimillion-dollar verdict after a jury found negligent supervision at Graydon Pool led to a 13-year-old boy’s drowning in 2008.

Soo Hyeon Park, his sister and parents had just arrived from South Korea and were visiting with friends in Ridgewood when they decided to go to the pool on July 15, 2008. While swimming out to a dock in the deep end with the two sons of his host, the boy began struggling to stay afloat and went under. None of the nine lifeguards on the stands around the pool that day saw the boy while he was in distress.

The jury found the village was negligent in its supervision and scanning of the patrons in the water and that the negligence contributed to Soo’s death. It awarded $10 million in damages: $4 million for the pain and suffering the boy endured as he drowned, $5 million to his parents and sister for their emotional distress and $1 million on the wrongful death claim as compensation for his parents’ and sister’s loss of Soo’s guidance, support and services, the appellate decision said.

In a post-verdict ruling, the trial judge accepted Ridgewood’s argument that the family was not entitled to damages for their pain and suffering because they failed to meet a medical expenses threshold of $3,600 under the Tort Claims Act, and the judge vacated the jury’s $5-million award on the emotional-distress claims.

RIDGEWOOD – Charlotte Samuels, the teenager who made headlines and broke a record when she swam the English Channel last month, turned a celebration Sunday into a fundraiser to help Paterson children learn how to swim.

The 16-year-old Ridgewood High School junior, who this year became the youngest person to complete the open-water swimming Triple Crown, and her parents invited more than 150 guests to an open house at their home in the village, where there was food and a huge congratulatory cake for Charlotte. The attendees included family, friends and mentors who helped Charlotte achieve her success in her demanding passion, long-distance swimming.

“We’re doing the party to thank people,” said Charlotte’s mother, Suzanne Samuels.

At the gathering the Samuels family also solicited donations for a cause close to its heart: Citizens for Swimming, a program in which Paterson youths are given swimming lessons at Graydon Pool in Ridgewood in the summer. This weekend’s event raised more than $1,500 for Citizens for Swimming, according to a preliminary tally of in-person and online donations.

“This is absolutely found money for us,” said the program’s director, Dawn Walter of Ridgewood, who attended the celebration.

RIDGEWOOD — The village has accepted a $35,000 grant that will fund the construction of a handicapped accessible ramp at Graydon Pool.

Ridgewood officials said the Community Development Block Grant will pay for the entire project.

The plan is to use the money to build a ramp from Graydon Pool’s parking lot to the sidewalk along Linwood Avenue.
