PARAMUS — Borough police, using a plan that was modified in the aftermath of a shooter entering the Westfield Garden State Plaza here two years ago, held an emergency-response drill at the mall Sunday morning.
The exercise kicked off at 10 a.m., and lasted less than an hour, involving about 100 police officers, said Paramus Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg. The participating police departments included not only Paramus but the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department regional SWAT team as well as ,Maywood, Hackensack, Rochelle Park, Fair Lawn and Ridgewood.
“It went well,” Ehrenberg said.
The drill was to test how quickly officers were able to respond to the mall in keeping with the plan that’s in place for any police emergency that occurs, including an active-shooter situation, Ehrenberg said. He described it as a “staging drill,” in which police reported to one of the shopping center’s parking lots.
“All we were doing was practicing and exercising our ability to call in mutual-aid towns to the Plaza,” Ehrenberg said. “It was more of a staging drill: how we could get people there and just practice our emergency-response time. … Even though it was at Westfield, the drill is to cover all our shopping-center infrastructure. … It’s a test of our reaction in case of a police emergency at one of our shopping centers.”
Local police have “enhanced” their emergency-response plan from the lessons learned from two incidents at the mall, according to the chief. In November 2013, 20-year-old gunman Richard Shoop entered Garden State Plaza and fired six rounds with a rifle, sending shoppers fleeing. He then killed himself. And in May last year, shoppers panicked and fled in cars and on foot when there were reports of gunfire inside the mall. It turned out that there was a car fire in a parking lot, and reportedly the sounds of the vehicle’s tires popping was mistaken for gunshots.
Paramus NJ, Four (4) vehicles collided on Route 17 northbound between Century Road and the Garden State Parkway at approximately 7:00 PM on Thursday, 09/17. At least two (2) adult victims were transported by separate ambulances to Hackensack University Medical Center’s (HUMC) main campus.

PARAMUS – An alert resident may have put an end Thursday to a series of overnight break-ins throughout North Jersey that included incidents in Ridgewood and Allendale.
James M. Rainsford, 47, is also being looked at in connection with similar crimes in North Haledon, Little Falls and elsewhere.
A River Edge resident called Paramus police at 8:41 a.m. to say he saw a person who he believed he recognized from media releases that was wanted for burglaries.

Rainsford was arrested a short time later while walking by a wooded area near Howland Avenue and Spring Valley Road in Paramus by Paramus Police Officers Mark Pinajian, Justin Sicari and Jack Cacamis on active burglary warrants from Allendale and Paterson.
Rainsford was found to be carrying a crack pipe and two small flashlights when he was arrested, according to a press release from Paramus Police.
He was interviewed by detectives from several local agencies and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office at Paramus Police Headquarters.
Allendale Police have charged Rainsford for a July 17 incident in which he allegedly was caught on video opening an unlocked door at a Franklin Turnpike home, while residents slept. A home alarm system woke them and they dialed 911. Rainsford allegedly fled when the alarm sounded, Allendale Police Det. Michael Dillon said.
Allendale Police compared notes with Norwood and Closter Police who, Dillon said, were familiar with Rainsford because he used to live in the Northern Valley. And they also got help from police in Little Falls, North Haledon and Ridgewood who are investigating their own incidents that may involve Rainsford, Dillon said.

Two men and an accomplice stole two late-model Mercedes-Benz automobiles, apparently left unlocked and with the keys in them by the valet at the Ridgewood Country Club lot in Paramus on Saturday night, according to Borough Police Deputy Chief Robert Guidetti.
Department detectives were investigating the theft of a 2015 S55 four-door black Mercedes and a 2014 S550 white Mercedes sedan, which took place around 7:30 p.m. at the Midland Avenue club, Guidetti said.
Both vehicles had been parked by the club’s valet service, the deputy chief said.
A black car then drove into the club’s lot and two men got out, with each one jumping into one of the Mercedes vehicles, Guidetti said. The suspects then drove off in the two cars, and their accomplice took off in the black car.
“It’s not a carjacking,” Guidetti said. “The cars were parked at the valet … and these guys entered the cars. … They were able to start both cars and drove away.”
The two stolen cars had apparently been left unlocked with the keys in them, the deputy chief said.
“For vehicle theft tips, I will tell you, never leave your keys in a vehicle and always leave your car locked,” Guidetti said.
Paramus issued an alert for the vehicles to surrounding towns, but they had not been found, the deputy chief said.

Paramus police got their goat Saturday.
Members of the department apprehended a small white goat shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday after getting a call that the animal was head-butting a door in the Beech Lane area of the borough.
The goat, described as “disorderly” on the Paramus Police Department’s Facebook page, was captured by Officers Christian Tsentas and Steve Nepola.
The animal was brought to Tyco Animal Control. Anyone with information about the goat should call the Paramus Police Department at 201-262-3400.
The police department’s Facebook page included a photo of the horned creature, wrapped in a large of piece yellow plastic, being held by Officer Jonathan Henderson.
The post about the goat launched a long string of cheeky comments, including, “Update, the goat was charged and tried for burglary. The judge was lenient on him because he was just a ‘kid.’”

PARAMUS — The cars, driven by men of varying ages and ethnicities, would come mostly in the evening. Some would circle the neighborhood. Others would pull into the wrong driveway as they searched for 12 North Farview Ave.
The behavior was strange enough in this residential neighborhood in the heart of the borough to spur residents to contact police.
That vigilance was credited by police on Thursday for helping bring down a suspected brothel that authorities say could have been operating for two months.
“That’s the way the system is supposed to work,” Deputy Chief Robert Guidetti said. “If you see something suspicious, don’t be embarrassed. Call the police.”
As a result of the proactive residents, police began surveillance at the small, pale blue house on Aug. 8. They saw numerous cars parked in front of the house with men between 20-years-old and 50-years-old coming in and out, Guidetti said.
On Wednesday evening, Paramus police and members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office posed as johns, entered the home and were offered sexual acts at a rate of $160 an hour, Guidetti said.
