Wildfires Rage Across New Jersey Amid Red Flag Warning: Here’s What You Need to Know

Ridgewood NJ, as wildfires continue to blaze across New Jersey, including a significant fire near Route 287 in Pompton Lakes, the state has been put under a Red Flag Warning due to high wind gusts of up to 30 mph, creating “critical fire weather conditions.” The National Weather Service warns that low humidity, strong winds, and extremely dry conditions make for an elevated fire risk across the state and neighboring regions.

Firefighters Battle Brush Fires Along New Jersey’s Palisades as Red Flag Warning Continues

Englewood Cliffs NJ, Firefighters worked tirelessly through the night to contain a series of brush fires along the Palisades in Englewood Cliffs. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service reported that the largest fire, covering roughly 19 acres, was about 30% contained by morning. Fire engines, ground crews, and a helicopter capable of dropping 350 gallons of water are actively working to contain the blaze.

National Weather Service : Low Humidity and Gusty Winds Create Significantly Elevated Fire Risk

Ridgewood NJ, the National Weather Service  has issued a RED FLAG WARNING remaining into effect  UNTIL 5 PM EDT THIS AFTERNOON FOR GUSTY WINDS AND DRY CONDITIONS FOR NORTHEASTERN NEW JERSEY . Effecting Western Passaic, Eastern Passaic, Hudson, Western Bergen, Eastern Bergen, Western Essex, Eastern Essex, Western Union and Eastern Union. Expect winds form Northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. RELATIVE HUMIDITY as low as 17 percent. TEMPERATURES in the upper 20s. Rapid fire spread is possible if ignition occurs, given gusty NW winds and very dry conditions across the area.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are expected or occurring. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels will create a significantly elevated fire growth potential.
