Girl Scout Troop 1326 completed their Silver Award project of restoring the fitness parcourse that lines the trails at Veterans Field and Maple Park. The course became open to the public on Nov. 20, 2015.

The Silver Award is the second-highest award given by the Girl Scouts of America and the highest award Girl Scout Cadettes may receive.

“Not a lot of individuals across the country finish the award,” said Troop 1326 leader Bernadette Walsh.

Four Girl Scout cadettes from Troop 1326 carried out the project: Katie Doyle, Erin Shevlin, Celeste Walsh and Chloe Young.

“They chose an ambitious project. They were thinking of things that would be sustainable and have an impact on students and adults,” Walsh said. “They all live in Ridgewood and have seen the old parcourse’s decay, so that’s how they came up with this idea.”

The scouts removed two stations and rehabilitated the push-up and knee-lift apparatuses from the parcourse’s original 18-part layout. They also added numerous new equipment, including a chin-up bar, balance board and balance plank.

A global fitness initiative that boomed in the 1970s has been making its way back into the worldwide psyche, including locally, where four Ridgewood Girl Scouts are shaping their Silver Award project around the idea. Their project, in fact, would produce a greater benefit to the community and coincide with several ongoing healthy living and awareness campaigns.

Three seemingly random apparatuses are currently located alongside trails at Veterans Field and near Maple Park. The equipment is actually part of Ridgewood’s old parcourse, an internationally-embraced concept that rose to popularity in the ’70s. A typical parcourse consists of walkways or trails marked with outdoor fitness equipment that is installed at varying intervals along the path.

Ridgewood’s parcourse was installed in the 1970s, said Troop 1326 leader Bernadette Walsh, who also serves as village councilwoman. In the past, it was a “series of 18 exercise stations … [that] provides warm-up, stretching, muscle strengthening, cardiovascular conditioning and cool down exercises combined with walking, jogging and running.

Tayler Tai enjoyed every minute of the 80 hours she devoted to earning her Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can receive. Her leadership project was to raise awareness about organ donations by attending health fairs and other events where she could speak about the NJ Sharing Network, a cause that interests her on a very personal level.

“I was born with a hole in my heart,” she said. Surgery, when she was only 3 years old, repaired the hole and prevented further damage.

“If I hadn’t had the surgery, there was a possibility that the hole could have gotten bigger and caused bigger issues. It could have led to me needing a transplant,” she explained.
