Ridgewood NJ TRANSIT Board Member Flora Castillo has been presented the 2018 Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) Rosa Parks Diversity Leadership Award. The honor was awarded last night during a ceremony at Club 101 in New York City.

The award is presented each year to a nominee who takes initiative to facilitate professional opportunities for women and minorities, and promotes diversity, inclusion and multi-cultural awareness within their organization.

“To be honored with an award bearing Rosa Parks name is a personal and professional highlight,” said Ms. Castillo. “I’ve continually tried to follow her trailblazing footsteps in everything I do. That’s why I feel it is critical to pay it forward by advocating for diversity and inclusion and ensuring that our transportation and mobility services enable all of our customers, especially those for whom transit services are their lifeline to employment, medical care, education and all the locations that support their well-being. This is a tremendous honor.”

Ms. Castillo has served as a member of the NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors since 1999, and holds the distinction as being the first Latina to serve on the Board. She currently chairs the Board’s Customer Service Committee and is a member of the Safety and Administration Committees.

An ardent transit advocate, particularly for minority customers and customers with disabilities, Ms. Castillo has played a vital role in ensuring quality services for all

NJ TRANSIT customers, including increased seating capacity, cleaner trains and buses, new equipment and equity in the distribution of all NJ TRANSIT equipment, services and programs. Beyond being an advocate for customers, Ms. Castillo has been a strident and steadfast advocate for business opportunities for small, minority, woman-owned and disadvantaged business enterprises (S/M/W/DBEs). This included the creation of Diversity Officer role and enhancement on the focus of opportunities for minorities and women within and outside of NJ TRANSIT.

Due in large part to Ms. Castillo’s advocacy and guidance, NJ TRANSIT has enjoyed continuous and historically unprecedented improvement both in its relationship to communities of color, and dollars awarded to S/M/W/DBEs. Ms. Castillo’s advocacy for civil rights, equity, environmental justice, diversity and inclusion, have kept NJ TRANSIT focused on this critical dimension of the corporation’s current responsibilities, as well as its future.

Reader says I haven’t had any confidence in my Ridgewood Water bills for quite a long time now

For the most part, it’s all about trust when it comes to the accuracy of utility bills. We trust that they are right and we pay them. I haven’t had any confidence in my Ridgewood Water bills for quite a long time now. I don’t believe that there’s any deliberate hanky-panky going on but what I do believe is that the utility is run by a bunch of political contectees who simply have no other interest in running the utility other than to maintain their positions.

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Police and Fire Department personnel responded to a one (1) vehicle crash into a commercial structure at 83 Godwin Avenue, Ridgewood on Sunday evening, 01/28. No injuries were reported in the crash. Damage to the structure was confined to a support beam associated with a roof overhang. The vehicle’s owner opted to drive it away on its own power.

Ridgewood NJ, congratulation to Mr. Bourque, the RHS Acabellas and the RHS Maroon Men for placing 2nd and 3rd in their ICHSA Quarterfinal and winning (Best Vocal Percussion and Best Choreography! Check out the video !

A cappella [a kapˈpɛlla] (Italian for in the manner of the chapel) music is specifically group or solo singing without instrumental accompaniment, or a piece intended to be performed in this way. It contrasts with cantata, which is accompanied singing.

Ridgewood NJ, Juilliard Chamber Orchestra Comes to West Side Presbyterian Church

The Juilliard Chamber Orchestra will perform at West Side Presbyterian Church on Sunday, February 11 at 3:00 pm as part of the West Side Concert Series. The conductorless ensemble is coached by Eric Bartlett, who is a 31-year veteran of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, a Juilliard faculty member and a New York Philharmonic cellist. Admission and parking are free; donations are welcome.
The 2017-2018 season marks the 42nd season of the West Side Concert Series. Throughout its long history, the series has presented a wide variety of solo, instrumental and ensemble concerts in the classical, African-American and jazz traditions.

Ridgewood NJ, Patricia Heaton from Everybody Loves Raymond will be appreaing at Bookends in Ridgewood on Tuesday, February 6th @ 6:00pm. The Emmy Award Winner and Star on ABC’s The Middle and on Food Network’s Patricia Heaton Parties, will sign her new books: Patricia Heatons Food and Family

Patricia Helen Heaton is an American actress . She is known for portraying Debra Barone on the CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond from 1996 to 2005, and as Frances “Frankie” Heck on the ABC sitcom The Middle (2009–present).

Heaton is also a three-time Emmy Award winner – twice winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2000 and 2001 for Everybody Loves Raymond, and a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Culinary Program as host/executive producer of Patricia Heaton Parties.

Reader says Yes,Ridgewood Residents remember

math wars

Yes, people, people remember.

Just as they remember Ridgewood taxpayers successfully suing the district about morally corrupting surveys administered to our children at school without our knowledge.

AND just as we remember pounding away at the Board of Education at their periodic meetings and on this blog for over a year in order to correct the “math ghetto” situation the district had gotten some of our elementary schools into by allowing school principals free choice of what math curriculum to use (remedial urban-targetted so-called “reform math” having gotten a partial foothold here).

AND as we remember exposing the radical “reform math” ideology of an incoming district superintendent and his equally radical educational-elite wife before he arrived in town, causing him to quit before he even started work (rather than go through here the agony he deservedly suffered in his just-prior job in Long Island…).
.
AND as we remember seeing the radical Ms. Botsford, the illustrious “Assistant Superintendent in charge of Curriculum”, sail off into the sunset in search of new school districts to torture, having been thoroughly thwarted here.
.
We remember our local “Alamos”.

How about the “longstanding tradition” of enforcing the law? Maybe if the states cooperated with the Federal government and had respect for the immigration laws, then the federal government wouldn’t have to “violate” any longstanding behavior norms.

Ridgewood NJ, Alexander Hamilton, part three: Aaron Burr, Tuesday, January 30, 7pm. Rick Feingold on Burr, who killed Hamilton in a famous duel and was later tried for treason. With music from the Broadway show. All welcome, light refreshments.

Hamilton, An American Musical is the hottest ticket on Broadway and Aaron Burr is the villain. As a Lieutenant Colonel in the Revolutionary War he begins an unlawful relationship with the wife of a British Officer. Elected Vice President in 1800 under Thomas Jefferson he kills Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton in a famous duel in Weehawken, NJ. Burr gets away with murder but is later tried for treason. This program covers the women in Burr’s life and features music from the Broadway production including The Election of 1800 and the Hamilton Burr duel.

Ridgewood NJ, The Ridgewood Public Library has been awarded a $1,000 Literacy Grant from Vernon Library Supplies, Inc., for the Library’s “outstanding contribution towards helping new immigrants to America to achieve English proficiency and become productive, fulfilled members of their communities.”
The grant will support Ridgewood Library’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program, which today coordinates 49 volunteer tutors with 122 adult students representing 32 countries. Tutors offer individual sessions, conversation groups and classes that bring students together from such diverse countries as Syria, Japan, Brazil, Panama, Bangladesh, Turkey, New Caledonia and more.

The Friends of the Ridgewood Library is also a longtime supporter that helps produce the Library’s annual International Luncheon; ESL students contribute native dishes and all are honored for their year’s work by Ridgewood’s Mayor, Council and Library Board. This year’s event will be held on June 8, 2018.
The ESL community is also welcome on March 5, 2018, when the Library will host a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) program on “How to Become a U.S. Citizen,” 10am – noon.
