Ridgewood Named one of the Best Small Cities in America

RidgewoodCBD_theridgewoodblog

2015’s Best & Worst Small Cities in America
November 8,2015
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, WalletHub’s analysts compared 1,268 small cities in the U.S. to find the ones where residents don’t have to give up much. Our data set includes a total of 22 metrics, ranging from housing costs to school-system quality to the number of restaurants per capita.

According to the Economic Policy Institute, a two-parent, two-child family would need to earn$49,114 a year “to secure an adequate but modest living standard” in Morristown, Tenn., compared with $106,493 in Washington. So even with a lighter wallet, a family or soloist can enjoy a comparable, or even better, quality of life for much less in a cozy place like Morristown.

Ridgewood NJ, was tied at 152 with Little Elm, TX, while Princeton NJ was ranked number 1. Ridgewood’s overall score was 50.44.

The affordability index took Ridgewood way down the list scoring a very un-affordable 1048! While despite being located in New Jersey we scored a 21 in Economic Health and a 74 in Education health thanks the stellar Ridgewood School system.

But another big weakness showed in the Quality of Life scoring a lowly 839,hummm we are just going to leave that one alone .

East Side, West Side all Around the town Ridgewood Taxpayers Continue to get the shaft from Mayor Aronsohn, Deputy Mayor Pucciarelli, and Councilwoman Hauck

Ridgewood NJ, On Wednesday November 4, the agenda for the Village Council’s Public Workshop Agenda included a single line item:  Public Hearing – Change in Use of 1057 Hillcrest Road (The Gate House) at Irene Habernickel Family Park.  No one in the neighborhood of the park had been informed via any official channels.  A small, almost unreadable sign posted at the park informed of the meeting, but few saw it and many who might have would not have read such an insignificant posting.  Many found out about the meeting through a grapevine of neighbors.  One was told, off the record, by a police officer.  Another heard about it from a contractor working at her home.  Some learned as they were arriving home from work that night.

The basic gist of what is going on is as follows.  For many years, the Gate House had been rented to a family, who opted not to renew their lease.  An ad placed for a new renter yielded no interested parties.  A business, however, had indicated an interest in acquiring the property.  Late in the summer, on September 16, an ordinance was introduced to change the use of 1057 Hillcrest Road to “recreational/educational purposes.”  Health Barn USA won the bid, and soon thereafter the business website indicated the new address in Ridgewood.  The website, should you care to read further, is https://www.healthbarnusa.com/

Some reached out to one of our elected officials, Councilwoman Susan Knudsen in advance of Wednesday’s meeting.  Responding appropriately and promptly, Councilwoman Knudsen explained to those who inquired how to speak their concerns at a Council Meeting, and who to speak with at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regarding the regulations involved using a property that was purchased with Green Acres Funding for business purposes.

Many residents of the neighborhood arrived at the November 4 meeting, not sure what to expect, but certain that they wanted to speak their opposition to this plan.  For most, this was the first Village Council meeting they had attended.  They waited patiently while other business items were discussed and presented.

When the Public Hearing began, the owner of Health Barn USA, Ms. Stacey Antine, explained the mission and purpose of her business.  She also denied some allegations that had been swirling prior to this meeting, stating that she was not involved in any litigation with her former landlord (Abmas Farm in Wyckoff) and that no children from inner cities would be bused in for the programs.  Following her presentation, several clients of Health Barn USA gave testimonials, and employees of the Village of Ridgewood spoke about safety and other concerns surrounding the changed use of the property.

When the residents finally got their chance to speak, they were amazing.  Twenty one individuals spoke, ranging in age from 18 to “retired.”  One after the next they voiced valid objections to the change in use, to the way the matter has been handled  by The Village Council, and to the legality of defying the NJ-DEP Green Acres guidelines.  They were all clear, determined, insistent, polite, even while frustrated.  Many expressed a sense of wonder that their elected officials had actually changed the use and drafted (although not finalized) a lease on a business BEFORE the Public Hearing.   You can hear their excellent comments on the Village of Ridgewood website U-Stream.

Here are a few highlights, in no particular order:

1. One resident was reprimanded sarcastically and loudly by Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck.  Yes, you read that correctly, a member of the public, a taxpayer, was publicly humiliated by one of our elected officials.

2. Results of a traffic study conducted by the Ridgewood Police Department seemed to greatly differ from the neighbors’ observations of traffic at the site.

3. While the original presentation by the Health Barn USA owner indicated that busses would not be coming in and out of the park, later in the evening it was revealed that mini-busses and full-size school busses could be expected on a regular basis.

4. The business has been granted permission by the Village to use a large plot on the park property  for gardening;  this is separate from the home and its immediate surrounds.

5. Assistant to the Village Manager, Ms. Janet Fricke, expressed frustration that one of our elected officials assisted residents in navigating the process without including her in the discussion.  Likewise, Village Manager Ms. Roberta Sonenfeld indicated that no such communications between a councilmember and the public should take place without everyone being cc’ed.  SINCE WHEN DO EMPLOYEES TELL ELECTED OFFICIALS WHAT THEY CAN OR CANNOT DO?  Does anyone actually believe that an elected official should not assist residents who ask for assistance?

6. No resident, not one, criticized the business in any way or maligned Ms. Antine for having sought this location.  Their argument was not with Health Barn USA; it is with the proposed presence of any business in their quiet residential neighborhood.

7. In summary, Mayor Aronsohn, Deputy Mayor Pucciarelli, and Councilwoman Hauck all indicated that with some minor adjustments to satisfy the NJ-DEP, they will be looking forward to welcoming this wonderful new business, thereby completely ignoring the impassioned pleas of these residents.

So, are the Habernickel Park neighbors getting the shaft just like the Schedler Park residents?  Sure looks like it.  Once again, the Council Majority is running a steam roller right over the taxpayers.

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Many mothers are turning to social media to help each other out, joining virtual communities to get advice on everything from diapers to divorce.

As CBS2’s Cindy Hsu reported, while some moms get to know each other at the playground, many are expanding their circle by joining mommy groups online.

Alissa Meyer has three young children and uses online community sites all the time.

“It’s been great. I don’t know what I would do without it,” she said. “I was able to meet so many people and get so much advice.”

Jen Marchetti is a working mom with three young boys. She started the group Ridgewood Moms on Facebook.

Milled asphalt being dumped at Lakeview Drive compost facility

road work Milled asphalt being dumped

November 3,2015
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, The staff of The Ridgewood Blog just received information from an observant Village resident that milled asphalt from a street paving job taking place off of Grove Street is being dumped at the Village’s Compost Facility on Lakeview Drive.

IMG 9065

IMG 9052

Our staff wonders whether this is being done with the full knowledge and approval of NJDEP, and if a full review of this incident could assist in answering these nagging questions:  1) who illegally dumped tons of concrete blocks at the same facility earlier this year, 2) why no one seemed to notice the dumping taking place (despite the locked gates), and 3) why the Ridgewood Police Department has thus far been unable to crack the case?

The Ridgewood Blog will bring you further updates as they are made known to us.

Ridgewood Schools Superintendent of Schools Comments on Police Presence at Schools

"security walk through" at Ridgewood Schools

file photo courtesy of Boyd Loving’s Facebook

October 30, 2015

Dear Ridgewood Public Schools Parent or Guardian,
This letter comes on the heels of recent media reports that Ridgewood Police presence has increased at our schools as a result of a student incident.
First and foremost, I want to assure you that our students and staff are safe. I would also like to clarify that in a school district as large as ours of nearly 6,000 students and over 800 staff members in 11 buildings, isolated student incidents occur from time to time that require our highly trained professional staff to request additional interventional support.
We are fortunate to collaborate with community partners such as the police and outside mental health professionals for their dependable expert assistance at those times. In such situations, communication with district parents and guardians requires a delicate hand.
As you can imagine, these incidents are very private events for the individuals involved. It is our goal to make every attempt to communicate appropriately while maintaining confidentiality so as to protect the health and privacy rights of the individuals. Every school incident that occurs provides the opportunity to refine our Emergency Response Plan and prevention protocols.
You are aware that in the recent past our district has experienced two safety incidents that thankfully turned out to be false alarms, a hoax swatting incident last May and a mistaken trespasser event in October. These incidents, in combination with the nationwide upturn in violence on school campuses, have helped us to determine that an increased Ridgewood Police presence in our buildings is warranted at this time, as a preventative measure.
I hope you share my perspective that an increase in police presence at our schools is a positive precaution. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority.
Thank you for your continued understanding, support and trust.
Sincerely yours,
Daniel Fishbein, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools

Christie: Decision to replace Bergen County Prosecutor Molinelli ‘long overdue’

quarters-19060569

NOVEMBER 2, 2015, 2:11 PM    LAST UPDATED: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2015, 10:32 PM
BY DUSTIN RACIOPPI
STATE HOUSE BUREAU |
THE RECORD

After a full week of not talking about the decision to end the 14-year tenure for Bergen County’s top law enforcement official, Governor Christie said Monday that the move was “long overdue.”

But Christie’s brief comments did little to answer questions about why Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli was told to leave, and why that move came amid mounting questions about the prosecutor’s decision-making and motivations in recent cases.

And also still unclear is who will replace Molinelli and when, a process that could take months unless Bergen County’s delegation of five state senators reaches an agreement with Christie.

Christie made his first comments on the matter Monday, one week after Molinelli was notified that he wouldn’t be renominated for a third term.

“The fact is that it’s time for a change in Bergen County. It’s long overdue,” Christie said after a meeting in Camden where he was highlighting police reform. “When that change is officially made, I’ll give you all the reasons why.”

Christie also said he wasn’t influenced by a letter sent by the Bergen County freeholder chairwoman referring complaints made against Molinelli at recent public meetings.

Readers say Investigating the flyer? Are you kidding me????, Mr Mayor Ridgewood is Not a Dictatorship

2

“Investigating the flyer” BRING IT ON. The Three Amigos and the Chamber should tread lightly. They may get caught up in any investigation for what they have done. I suspect the the person or persons that mail the flier have done their homework

Oh by the way, the law has been seriously broken; a major crime has been committed according to some speakers at tonight’s Parking Forum.

They wonder who committed the so-called crime of making Vote No parking flyers and didn’t sign name.

Don’t you know that only Vote Yes Parking signs are allowed. Those signs are not signed either; but that is OK.

And it is OK that they are placed all over Ridgewood on PUBLIC PROPERTY.

Dictatorship is alive and well in Ridgewood N.J.

So what are we going to do about it. Well, I am going to vote no on parking.

Watch out for dictatorial council practices in future. Attend meetings and let them know that democracy is NOT being practiced in Ridgewood.. Democracy in name only; not in practice.

Investigating the flyer? Are you kidding me???? What the heck is going on around here? Do they investigate every real-estate postcard that comes in the mail? Every advertisement? Such an investigation is illegal I am sure of it. And by the way, Mr. Transparent Mayor – where was all this super sleuthing when the anonymous email was sent to Mike Sedon’s employer? You were not in the least bit curious or concerned, and in that instance a HUGE ethical breach had been committed.

Let them go ahead and accuse someone about the flyer. We will be all over them like fire ants. They will rue the day they started this investigation.

Believe it: There’s high drama in some N.J. Assembly races

1280px Battle of Trenton by Charles McBarron

Experts say Tuesday’s state Assembly elections may draw one of the lowest voter turnouts New Jersey has ever seen. In fact, a Rutgers-Eagleton poll released this past week showed three-quarters of New Jersey residents had no idea at all there was an election coming up. But there are at least a few races generating drama — with both Democrats and Republicans hoping they can grab a few new seats in the lower house of the state Legislature.
